Of these 16 choices, fancy-leaved caladium is specifically listed for full shade by University of Massachusetts Amherst Extension. Many others are recommended for part-to-full shade, while wax begonia and pansy are better treated as part-shade choices.
What “full shade” means for annuals
A shaded garden still needs daylight. Bright indirect light and dappled light beneath trees are different from a location with no usable light at all. Match a plant to the light category given for it rather than assuming every shade-tolerant annual will thrive in the darkest corner. The University of Massachusetts Amherst Extension distinguishes full shade, part shade, and part-to-full shade in its annuals for shade guide.
The list below includes the requested range of choices, but not every plant is a full-shade specialist. That distinction matters most for wax begonia, pansy, and twinspur, which have more limited shade recommendations.
Flowering annuals for shade
1. Common garden impatiens (Impatiens walleriana)
A low-growing, spreading bedding plant with flowers in many colors, common impatiens is a classic choice for part to full shade. It also suits containers. Avoid susceptible varieties where impatiens downy mildew has been a problem; disease precautions are covered below. Iowa State Extension describes its growth and flower range in its shade annuals guide.

Choose it for a site with some direct or bright light rather than assuming it will perform equally well in full shade.
9. Pansy (Viola × wittrockiana / Viola spp.)
Pansies can be useful in cooler seasons and in shady areas, but the reviewed extension sources classify them for sun to part shade, not full shade. They are a better choice for a bright, cooler border than a dim location with little daylight.

11. Coleus (Coleus / Plectranthus scutellarioides)
Coleus is grown chiefly for leaves in combinations of reds, purples, greens, and other colors. Many cultivars suit part to full shade, though some are adapted to sun; check the plant tag for the cultivar’s light preference.
12. Fancy-leaved caladium (Caladium bicolor)
This is the clearest full-shade choice in the Massachusetts Extension table. Caladium is grown for colorful leaves rather than showy flowers, and its tubers can be stored over winter.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to choose and grow them
- Start with the light. Use the plant’s listed category—full shade, part shade, or part-to-full shade—to match it to the actual site. For the darkest spots, caladium has the clearest full-shade listing; the part-shade options need more light.
- Plan for water. Browallia, fuchsia, New Guinea impatiens, and twinspur are identified as needing steady moisture. Many other listed plants are classed as needing average moisture. Check the planting information for your specific cultivar and container, which may dry faster than a bed.
- Plant at the right time. Set out sturdy young plants after the local last frost, follow the spacing directions on the plant label, mulch, and water as needed through the growing season.
- Use containers where they solve a site problem. Tuberous begonias, Browallia, and impatiens are among the choices suited to containers or hanging baskets. Containers also let you place plants where light and watering are easier to manage.
- Mix flowers and foliage deliberately. Pair flowering annuals with foliage choices such as coleus or caladium when you want color and texture even where flowers are not the main feature.
Prevent impatiens downy mildew
Iowa State Extension reports that all common garden impatiens varieties (I. walleriana) and interspecific hybrids with an I. walleriana parent are susceptible to downy mildew; garden balsam is also susceptible. New Guinea impatiens are highly tolerant. The extension identifies Beacon™ and Imara® XDR as resistant varieties being introduced, but availability may vary.
Where the disease has occurred before, avoid susceptible common impatiens or choose a resistant alternative. Iowa State recommends sanitation as the best management approach for landscape plantings because fungicides are not practical for landscape control. Destroy infected plants rather than composting them at home. See the university’s full impatiens disease guidance for details.
