You can make an upside-down planter from a bucket, a reused hanging basket, or a recycled bottle. The most clearly supported choice for an inverted setup is a compact, trailing tomato; strawberries and herbs are also options for hanging baskets, but not every variety or watering need suits every design. These are practical space-saving DIY projects, not proven ways to increase harvests.
Choose a design that suits the plant and the hanging point
All five ideas below are variations on three documented approaches: a bucket, an old hanging basket, and a recycled bottle. The double-planting and reused-material combinations are design suggestions, not separately tested methods. Before building, check that the container has drainage and that its hanging point is appropriate for the filled container and mature plant. No universal support weight limit is established for these projects.
| Idea | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Bucket planter | Compact trailing tomato | Use a sound bucket, provide drainage, and secure it at a suitable hanging point. |
| Reused hanging basket | Compact tomato, strawberry, or suitable herb | Adapt the basket to hold the plant inverted; confirm the plant and basket suit each other. |
| Recycled-bottle planter | A small plant suited to the bottle’s capacity | Follow a bottle-planter construction approach and make sure water can drain. |
| Bucket with a top planting area | Compact tomato plus a compatible plant at the top | Editorial design variation: check that both plants have enough room, sun, and compatible water needs. |
| Planter assembled from reused materials | A plant matched to the finished container | Editorial combination of reused parts; prioritize drainage and a secure hanging point. |
1. Make an upside-down planter from a bucket
A bucket is a straightforward starting point for an inverted tomato container. The University of Florida IFAS Extension describes converting a bucket for upside-down tomatoes. Choose a compact, trailing variety—such as a tumbling tomato—rather than assuming a large, unspecified tomato plant will suit a hanging container. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach identifies compact tumbling tomatoes as candidates for hanging baskets.
- Choose a bucket in sound condition and confirm it can be hung securely when filled with potting mix and supporting a plant.
- Make an opening in the base large enough to accommodate the plant without damaging its stem. Avoid making the opening so large that the growing medium can escape.
- Provide drainage so excess water can leave the container.
- Position the tomato through the base opening, fill the bucket with potting mix, and hang it from the checked support.
The bucket conversion is an established DIY approach; the exact opening size and construction details should be adapted to the bucket and plant rather than treated as a universal specification. [University of Florida IFAS Extension: Container Gardening]

#1 Best Overall
- Easy Planting: No need to tie up vines or bend down for planting. Tomatoes and vegetables grow upright for easy access.
- Space Saving: Upside down design saves space and utilizes gravity to maximize nutrient supply to roots.
- Healthy Roots: Fabric material naturally prunes roots and allows maximum oxygen for healthy growth.
- Easy to Fill: Single strap design makes it easy to fill with soil and water, and allows planting additional herbs.
- Patented Design: Zipper in design for easy assembly and patented for exclusive use.
2. Adapt an old hanging basket
If you already have a hanging basket, it can be adapted to hold a plant through an opening in its base. Florida IFAS describes an old hanging basket as another option for an upside-down tomato container. Iowa State Extension also recommends compact tumbling tomatoes for hanging baskets. Inspect the basket for damage, make sure its liner or structure can retain potting mix, and ensure excess water can drain.
Strawberries can also grow in hanging baskets. Iowa State advises choosing day-neutral or everbearing strawberries and clipping runners. That guidance concerns hanging baskets generally; it does not establish that every strawberry cultivar will thrive when planted inverted.

- Packgae includes: It comes with 2 pcs of fabric hanging planters in black and green, each bag measures 8.8 * 15 inches. 2 mental hooks are included for easy hanging. One nice feature is that they can easily be turned for more or less sunlight for both sun and shade loving plants.
- Heavy-duty: Made of Nonwoven Fabric, material is heavy-duty felt, good permeability let roots breathe freely and make the plants grows well and increase yield. Keeps plant warmer in winter and cooler in the summer, decreased risk of transplant shock, creates improved overall root structure.
- Upside down design: These upside down planters are great solution if you have deer or other that come and munch on your plants when you're not looking, and most importantly no more sore back and knees. The upside down design will save space and utilize gravity to maximize water and nutrient supply to roots.
- Openings on side: the upgraded design planter bags will allow you to grow so many plants in one bucket. Grow the juicy tomatoes or cucumber on the bottom and the side openings (12 holes in total) are great for herbs, strawberries, peppers, etc.
- Easy to use: The grow bag is suitable for patios, lawn, gardens, balcony, any outdoor and indoor space. Load the plant root side first pushing them through the openings, and then fill the bag with dirt, pick a suitable height and sunny area to hang the bag. These bags can easily be used for several seasons and not take up much space when storing.
3. Build a recycled-bottle planter
A recycled bottle offers a smaller-scale hanging planter. Queensland Department of Education describes a recycled-bottle upside-down tomato planter. Use the bottle’s limited capacity as a constraint: choose a plant and container size that make sense together, create an opening for the plant, and provide a way for excess water to drain. The source establishes the bottle as a construction approach, not a guarantee of tomato yield or suitability for every tomato variety. 4. Add a top planting area to a bucket planter
As a design variation, leave part of the bucket’s top available for a second planting area while the tomato grows from the bottom. This is not a separately tested method in the cited guidance. Treat it as a way to use the container’s upper surface, not as a proven way to grow more or harvest more. Select plants with compatible sun and watering needs, and do not crowd the tomato or block its access to light.

5. Assemble a hanging planter from reused materials
You can combine a suitable reused container, a liner or retaining material, and appropriate hanging hardware into a custom planter. This is an editorial design suggestion rather than a documented, standardized construction method. Choose materials that can hold potting mix without obstructing drainage, and check the assembled planter’s support point for the filled weight and plant. If you cannot confidently assess the support, do not hang it there.

Compact trailing tomatoes
These are the clearest fit for an inverted planter in the cited guidance. Iowa State Extension points to compact tumbling tomatoes for hanging baskets. Tomatoes need a sunny position: Oregon State University Extension Service gives six to eight hours of direct sun as general guidance for fruiting vegetables. Strawberries
Hanging baskets can suit strawberries, especially day-neutral or everbearing types, according to Iowa State Extension. Clip runners as they form. This does not establish that strawberries are equally suitable for every upside-down planter design.
Herbs
Herbs can be grown in containers, but their water needs differ by species. Iowa State Extension’s container-herb guidance supports matching the plant to the container and its care requirements rather than treating all herbs alike. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCare for a hanging container
- Give fruiting plants sufficient sun. For tomatoes and other fruiting vegetables, use the six-to-eight-hours-of-direct-sun guidance from Oregon State Extension as a general target.
- Check moisture often. Hanging containers can dry out, but watering frequency depends on conditions; do not rely on a fixed schedule.
- Water thoroughly. Iowa State Extension advises watering until excess drains. Inconsistent watering can contribute to tomato fruit cracking and blossom-end rot.
- Expect container tomatoes to need more frequent fertilizer than garden-grown tomatoes. Follow fertilizer directions for the product and plant rather than applying an invented universal schedule.
- Keep drainage clear. Containers need drainage, and excess water should be able to escape.
