Cardboard in the Garden: When It Works as Landscaping Mulch

Cardboard can smother lawn and weeds while you establish a new garden bed. Learn how to overlap and cover it, and why it is not a permanent weed barrier.

Cardboard is useful as a temporary, light-blocking layer when you are turning lawn or weedy ground into a new garden bed. Lay it over the prepared area, overlap and wet the sheets, then cover them with organic mulch. It can suppress vegetation beneath it, but it is not a permanent weed barrier—and the covering layer can make soil moisture harder to judge.

Why cardboard suppresses weeds

Cardboard blocks light from reaching existing plants and weed seeds underneath. Without sunlight, vegetation has less ability to photosynthesize and grow. That makes cardboard particularly useful for smothering lawn and other growth while creating a new bed, rather than as a routine layer in every established garden.

Clemson Extension says cardboard over lawn and weeds can kill most vegetation when establishing a new landscape planting. The result is suppression, not a guarantee that every weed is gone: the cardboard eventually decomposes, and weeds can later germinate in the mulch above it. See Clemson Extension’s guidance on cardboard in the landscape and UC IPM’s overview of sheet mulching.

How to use cardboard to make a new bed

  1. Prepare the area. Cut or flatten existing growth. Remove persistent perennial weeds where practical; Oregon State University Extension specifically names blackberry, bindweed, morning glory and quackgrass as weeds to deal with before sheet mulching.
  2. Lay and overlap the cardboard. Cover the ground without leaving gaps. Penn State Extension recommends overlapping sheets by 8–10 inches and wetting them as you lay them so they stay in place and begin to break down.
  3. Cover it with organic material. Penn State’s new-bed method calls for a total mulch layer of 4–6 inches over the cardboard. This is a specific recommendation for its lawn-to-bed method, not a universal depth for every garden.
  4. Allow the bed to rest before planting. Penn State advises leaving the prepared area for several months before planting into it. The appropriate wait can vary with climate, materials and what you intend to grow.

For detailed instructions, see Oregon State Extension’s sheet-mulching guide and Penn State Extension’s three-step lawn-to-garden-bed method. If the cardboard will remain exposed while you work, Oregon State notes that rocks or garden stakes can help hold it down; they are optional if the material is already secured by the mulch.

Will cardboard keep water from reaching the soil?

Do not assume that rain or irrigation is reaching the soil and roots in the amount your plants need. Cardboard and the mulch above it can make it difficult to judge moisture beneath the sheet. If you are planting through the layer, plan how you will deliver water and check the soil below it; Oregon State Extension identifies drip irrigation as one consideration for direct planting. UC IPM also notes that judging whether moisture beneath sheet mulch is appropriate can be difficult.

There is a related longer-term concern: Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advises that sheet material can obstruct air and water movement if left in place. Its guidance is to break up paper or cardboard after the vegetation beneath has died or after several weeks. Treat that as Iowa State’s garden guidance, rather than a fixed schedule for every site or climate. Read Iowa State’s guidance on using mulch in the garden for its context.

Cardboard for a new bed versus mulch in an established bed

Cardboard is most useful as part of bed conversion: it blocks existing growth while the organic layer above it becomes the bed’s surface. In an established landscape bed, routine mulch is usually the relevant tool. Clemson Extension recommends a 3-inch mulch layer in established beds and says the top inch of medium-to-coarse mulch, such as pine straw or large bark chips, hinders weed-seed germination better than finer mulch.

These recommendations address different situations: Penn State’s 4–6 inches is the total covering layer in its cardboard-based new-bed method, while Clemson’s 3 inches is for established landscape beds. Coarse surface mulch can help limit new seedlings, but neither approach makes a garden permanently weed-free.

What cardboard can—and cannot—do

  • Good fit: Smothering much existing lawn or vegetation to establish a new bed.
  • Needs attention: Persistent perennial weeds may require removal or other control before the sheets go down.
  • Temporary effect: The cardboard decomposes; weeds may later establish in the surface mulch, so inspect and maintain the bed.
  • Moisture trade-off: The layers can make it harder to tell whether the soil below is adequately watered.

Clemson Extension’s Jackie Jordan describes cardboard as “another tool in the gardener’s toolbox.” That is the right way to think of it: a practical material for a particular job, not a permanent, set-and-forget barrier.
