Briggs & Stratton’s U.S. lineup spans 18- and 22-inch single-stage snow blowers and 24-, 27- and 30-inch two-stage models. The right place to start is the snow you typically clear, the size and surface of your area, and the features you need—not a claim that one model is universally best. The specifications and snow-condition descriptions below are the manufacturer’s; the available evidence does not establish independent comparative test results or a reliability ranking.
Which Briggs & Stratton snow blower should you compare?
As a starting point, someone clearing a smaller area in lighter snowfall can investigate a single-stage model. For larger areas or heavier accumulations, compare the two-stage listings. Those are comparison cues, not a universal rule: driveway size, surface, storage, and the snow you actually encounter all matter. Briggs & Stratton describes some smaller machines for light snow, and some configurations for light-to-moderate snow; its larger two-stage listings are positioned for moderate-to-heavy or heavy snow. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independently verified performance findings. See the official U.S. snow blower lineup.
Lineup at a glance
| Lineup option | Stage and listed width | Manufacturer-stated snow positioning | What to confirm for the exact configuration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-stage models | Single-stage; 18 or 22 inches | Light snow for smaller models; some configurations are described for light-to-moderate snow | Engine, starting method, chute controls, drive, lights, heated grips, and warranty vary by configuration; check the lineup and model number. |
| 22-inch 9.5 TP SnowShredder | Single-stage; 22 inches | Briggs & Stratton says it is intended for light-to-moderate snow, including compacted plow-end snow. | Selected models 1697292 and 1696847-00 are listed; their feature details differ. Check the product page for the version being sold. |
| Two-stage models | Two-stage; 24, 27 or 30 inches | The larger listings are positioned for moderate-to-heavy or heavy snow. | Engine, intake height, starting method, chute controls, drive and steering, lights, heated grips, and warranty are configuration-specific; confirm them on the listing. |
The official lineup establishes these width and stage ranges, but the information available here does not provide a complete, model-by-model specification set for every two-stage configuration. Do not infer a feature from a broad model label or assume that all versions share it.
What the 22-inch SnowShredder specifications tell you
For the 22-inch 9.5 TP SnowShredder, Briggs & Stratton lists a 22-inch clearing width, 30-foot throwing distance, 9.5 ft-lb of torque, and 208 cc displacement. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independently measured results. The product page presents the machine for light-to-moderate snow, including compacted snow left at the end of a driveway by a plow.

Single-stage or two-stage: what is the difference?
The practical distinction in this lineup is the type of snow and clearing job Briggs & Stratton associates with each category: single-stage listings include machines positioned for light snow, while the larger two-stage listings are positioned for more demanding snow conditions. Width also differs: single-stage models are listed at 18 or 22 inches, and two-stage models at 24, 27 or 30 inches. Width is only one selection factor; compare intake height, engine, chute adjustment, starting, drive and steering features on the exact model listing before choosing.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
For a small area with relatively light snowfall, a listed single-stage option is a reasonable place to begin comparing. If you routinely face heavier accumulations or clear a larger area, compare the two-stage models. Neither category alone guarantees a particular result on every snow type or surface.
Features to compare before buying
- Snow and clearing area: Match the manufacturer’s stated snow positioning and clearing width to your typical conditions and the area you need to clear.
- Intake height and machine footprint: Check the exact listing for intake height, then consider whether the machine will fit your storage space and be practical to maneuver where you use it.
- Starting method: Confirm whether the specific configuration uses recoil or electric start. Do not treat the separate Snow Starting Promise as a general starting guarantee for every snow blower.
- Chute operation: Compare how the chute rotates and how its deflector is adjusted. The control arrangement can differ between configurations.
- Drive and steering: Check whether the listed model is self-propelled and what steering features it offers; do not assume every machine has the same controls.
- Lights and heated grips: These are useful to check against when and how you clear snow, but their availability is configuration-specific.
- Warranty and service: Read the warranty for the exact model and intended use, and check that compatible parts and local service are accessible.
Briggs & Stratton’s U.S. lineup page is the appropriate place to compare listed configurations. Confirm the exact model number and local availability before purchase; listings and retail stock can change.

Are Briggs & Stratton snow blowers dependable?
The available evidence supports comparing the manufacturer’s specifications, product descriptions, warranty terms, and maintenance guidance; it does not establish an independent reliability ranking, verified owner-satisfaction record, or comparative test result. A warranty is useful to understand, but it is not evidence by itself that a machine will perform better or last longer than another.
Keep the product warranty separate from the Snow Starting Promise. Briggs & Stratton says that its promise applies to select electric-start Snow Engines and states a two-year term, subject to conditions and exclusions. The page says eligible engines should start within two electric-start attempts down to -20°F (-28°C). It is a limited program, not a promise that every snow blower configuration will start under all conditions. Review the Snow Starting Promise terms and the specific product warranty before relying on either.

Maintenance, clog safety, and finding compatible parts
Briggs & Stratton’s maintenance guide advises checking tire pressure, lubricating bearings, inspecting scraper blades and skid shoes, changing oil, and using treated fuel for storage. It also states that gasoline can begin to degrade in as little as 30 days and that fuel treatment can keep fuel fresh for up to 24 months. Those timeframes are manufacturer statements in its maintenance guidance, not independently validated measurements here. Follow the operator’s manual for the specific machine and engine.
If the chute clogs, Briggs & Stratton’s guidance is explicit: “Never use your hand to try and clear a clogged snow chute, even with the engine off. Always use a clean tool.” Follow the model’s manual and safety instructions when clearing a blockage.

Before ordering a maintenance kit, fuel stabilizer, spark plug, scraper blade, or skid shoes, identify the engine model number and check compatibility. Briggs & Stratton explains how to locate it in its guide to finding a snow blower engine model number. Use that information alongside the machine’s operator’s manual; engine identification alone may not establish compatibility for every machine part. For maintenance procedures, see the snow blower repair and maintenance guide.
