Historic homes hide more than dramatic escape routes. Their concealed features include priest holes built to shelter Catholic clergy, discreet doors between rooms, passages not shown on ordinary tours and, in one case, a compartment only thought to have been a priest hole. Here are 11 documented examples—and what the evidence says each one actually is.
What counts as a secret room in a historic home?
The phrase covers several different features. A priest hole is a hiding space associated with efforts to shelter Catholic priests during periods of persecution in England. A concealed door or passage may instead connect rooms, preserve a room’s symmetry or simply be a feature whose original purpose is not established. A listening hole is another kind of security detail, not a room.
That distinction matters: a hidden door does not, by itself, prove that a house had an escape tunnel or a priest hole. The examples below keep to what the sites’ institutional sources describe.
Historic houses with priest holes and hiding spaces
1. Boscobel House, Shropshire
English Heritage describes two priest holes at Boscobel House, associated with the recusant Giffard family: one beneath a closet opening off the Squire’s Room, and another beneath the stairs leading to the attic gallery. These spaces belong to the history of Catholic religious persecution. The house is also associated with Charles II, who took refuge there after the Battle of Worcester in 1651; that is a separate episode, not the purpose of the priest holes. English Heritage’s Boscobel history describes their locations.

At Wimpole Estate, doors are painted or wallpapered to blend into their surroundings. The National Trust presents these as disguised doors, not evidence of a hidden room. 10. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Florida
Vizcaya says its historic house contains hidden passages and doors, but they are not visible on a regular visit or private tour. The museum has made a dedicated video tour led by former Deputy Director for Collections and Curatorial Affairs Remko Jansonius to show these features. Check Vizcaya’s official site for current visitor information and access arrangements.
11. O Museum, Washington, D.C.
O Museum describes its property as a group of interconnected townhouses designed in 1892 by Edward Clark and says it has more than 80 secret doors. That figure and historical description are the museum’s own claims; they have not been independently verified here. The example is a reminder that a reported count of secret doors is not the same as a confirmed count of hidden rooms. O Museum’s official site.
Why did historic houses have secret doors?
Some concealed spaces were made for urgent concealment, as the priest holes show. Other hidden features had less dramatic functions. The National Trust notes that some concealed doors may have provided quick passage between rooms, while others may have been installed for aesthetic reasons—for example, when a visible door disrupted a room’s symmetry. The original purpose of an individual feature is not always known.
For a visitor, the distinction is useful: a documented priest hole tells a specific story of refuge; a disguised door tells you that an opening was made unobtrusive; a suspected priest hole or unexplained door leaves room for uncertainty. Not every hidden feature was a secret escape route.
