A straight wood fence depends on three separate checks: the posts must follow the planned fence line, each post must be plumb in two directions, and the rails and pickets must follow a consistent elevation plan. Set and recheck those control points as you work; a plumb post by itself does not guarantee a straight-looking fence.

Before digging, verify the route and local rules, request utility locates, and choose the fence system and gate layout. Post spacing, footing details and grade treatment depend on the materials, site, loads and applicable requirements, so do not rely on one dimension as a universal rule.

On a fence job, layout and repeatable checks come before the visible carpentry. This guide follows that sequence, from planning the fence face to checking the finished run and gates.

Start With the Fence Plan, Not the Lumber Order

Before pricing materials, decide what the fence needs to do. A privacy fence, a front-yard picket fence, a pool barrier and a decorative garden enclosure can have different rules and construction requirements.

Common wood fence styles include privacy, board-on-board, shadowbox, horizontal, picket, post-and-rail, split-rail and lattice-top designs. Choose the system before laying out post centers: panels, rails and boards place different demands on posts and connections. Gates, corners, grade breaks and long runs need deliberate planning rather than being treated as ordinary bays.

Sketch the route and mark its starts, ends, corners, gates, direction changes, tie-ins and grade changes. Decide which side will present to the yard or street and which side will carry the rails. For each gate, plan the opening, hinge and latch sides, swing and clearances before positioning its posts.

Do not assume an existing fence marks the legal boundary. Check available property-line evidence and, if the boundary is uncertain, consult a qualified surveyor before building. A finished fence in the wrong place can be costly to correct.

Check Permits, HOA Rules, Easements, and Utility Locates

Fence rules vary by jurisdiction and site. Ask the local authority about permits, height, setbacks, easements and visibility rules, especially for front yards, corner lots, pools, retaining-wall areas and fences near sidewalks or driveways. Check HOA rules for style, color, height and which side faces outward. A model-code provision is not a substitute for the rules adopted locally.

Request a utility locate before digging any post hole. In the U.S., 811 guidance includes fence posts among digging projects. Submit the local request and wait for the required response; timing, markings and safe-excavation practices vary by state. Confirm and respect the marks, and follow local requirements near them.

Keep the locate confirmation and photographs of the markings, approvals and layout references with the project record. A locate does not make digging risk-free; it helps you identify and avoid marked underground facilities.

Wood Fence Cost

Fence cost depends on the local market, fence style and height, wood species, site access, terrain, gates, removal work and labor. The research available for this guide does not verify current price ranges, so get local, itemized estimates rather than relying on a national per-foot figure.

For a meaningful comparison, ask each estimator to specify the fence system and materials, post and footing approach, gates and hardware, removal and disposal, finishing, and any site or access assumptions. For DIY planning, include tools or rentals, delivery, waste, fasteners and finishing materials in addition to lumber.

Choose the Right Wood, Posts, and Fasteners

Select wood for its exposure, intended use, local conditions and maintenance needs. Confirm the treatment mark on embedded posts instead of assuming that all pressure-treated lumber is suitable for ground contact. The American Wood Protection Association identifies UC4A as general-use ground-contact treatment for fence posts; a more demanding exposure or structural design may call for a different specification.

  • Hands-free plumb and level of posts, flag poles, water pipes, railings, and more

Above-ground fence boards and embedded structural posts do not have the same exposure. Match each component to where and how it will be used, and follow the project specification and treatment label. A treatment category does not, by itself, establish structural capacity.

Gateposts, corner posts and other terminals carry different loads from ordinary line posts. Choose their size, connections and footing or backfill method for the fence system and site. Wind exposure, soil, fence height, gate loads and terrain all affect the design; do not assume one post size or footing detail suits every project.

Choose fasteners and hardware approved for the wood treatment and exterior exposure. Follow the preservative and hardware manufacturers’ compatibility guidance. For coastal or otherwise corrosive conditions, confirm that the selected hardware is suitable for the exposure.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

Typical layout and installation tools include stakes, mason’s line, a tape measure, marking paint, a level or post level, digging tools, a shovel, a saw, a drill or driver, clamps and appropriate safety gear. The tool list depends on the fence system and site.

Core materials may include posts, rails, boards or panels, compatible fasteners, gate framing, hinges, latches and finishing products. Follow the selected system’s manufacturer instructions or project specification for allowable spans, connections and component sizes rather than using a universal post spacing or rail count.

A story pole or marked gauge can repeat rail and board positions, while a spacer block can help make gaps consistent. A magnetic post level designed for fence posts can help check plumb on two axes; on wood posts, check that it has a suitable strap. It verifies verticality, not the fence’s alignment to the run.

Layout the Fence Line Carefully

Set out the route using the planned fence face as your reference. Mark the terminal points first, then stretch a taut mason’s line between the control points for each straight run. Keep the line on a consistent side and at a consistent offset from the fence face. Recheck its tension if it is disturbed.

Divide each run according to the chosen fence system’s allowable bay or panel span. Account for post width, rails, actual panel dimensions, gates and turns before marking centers. Avoid leaving an unintended narrow final bay. Do not assume a single center-to-center spacing works for every fence.

Before installation, decide whether the fence will step in level sections or rack to follow a slope. The approach affects post heights, rail layout and bottom clearance; use a system designed for the chosen treatment. Pickets should not be detailed in a way that traps moisture against vulnerable wood.

Dig and Set Fence Posts

Hole depth, diameter and footing or backfill method depend on the post, fence system, soil, wind exposure, frost conditions and local requirements. Do not use a universal depth or hole width in place of those checks. Confirm the method before digging, and keep marked utility areas in mind.

Set the terminal posts first: corners, ends, gates and substantial direction changes. Position them relative to the planned fence face and gate geometry. Brace each post while its selected installation method stabilizes, then check both alignment to the reference line and plumb in two perpendicular directions. Recheck after placing footing or backfill material, since that work can shift a post.

Set line posts from the verified terminal points and the chosen bay layout. Keep them adjustable and braced until stable. If a post moves, correct and recheck it before connecting rails; otherwise its error can carry into adjoining bays.

Follow the footing material manufacturer’s instructions and the project’s specified installation method. No concrete or backfill method alone guarantees a straight or durable fence; placement, drainage, materials and site conditions all matter.

Install Rails, Pickets, and Panels

Install rails to the established post layout, then check the rail plane across multiple bays. Individually plumb posts can still produce a wavy fence if rail ends, elevations or connections are inconsistent. Pay particular attention at corners, grade transitions and gateposts.

Before attaching boards or panels, set a repeatable datum for their position. Use a story pole, spacer, marked gauge or suitable string reference, and periodically check the finished face from a distance. Sort material and reject posts or boards that are severely bowed, split, damaged or unsuitable for their structural use.

For a stepped fence, establish each section’s intended top and bottom references before installing boards. For a racked fence, confirm the rails and infill are designed to follow the grade. Do not force rigid components into a curve or slope they cannot accommodate.

Build Gates That Do Not Sag

A gate is a concentrated load and an alignment test. Plan its posts, opening, swing, hardware and clearances before setting the posts, and select a design appropriate to the gate and site.

Build the gate square, brace it according to its design and use exterior hardware rated for the gate and exposure. Check hinge and latch alignment before closing access with boards or panels. If a gate binds or begins to sag, inspect the gateposts, footing assumptions, opening geometry and hardware rather than treating it as a picket problem.

Trim, Cap, Seal, and Maintain the Fence

Once the fence face is installed, finish it to the chosen design. Use details and finishing products appropriate to the wood treatment and exposure, and avoid details that hold water against vulnerable wood. Follow product instructions for cut-end treatment, caps, stain or sealer.

Follow the coating manufacturer’s moisture and preparation requirements before finishing lumber. Weather, wood moisture and product choice affect when a finish can be applied; do not assume every new fence is ready on the same schedule.

Inspect the fence periodically, keep soil and mulch from accumulating against wood, and address drainage or vegetation that holds moisture. Choose a maintenance schedule based on the wood, finish, climate and product guidance.

Common Mistakes That Shorten Fence Life

Common planning mistakes include trusting an old fence as the boundary, buying materials before checking local and HOA rules, skipping utility locates, and treating gates or grade changes as afterthoughts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installation mistakes include using posts without confirming their ground-contact suitability, relying on one spacing or footing dimension for every site, failing to brace posts, and checking plumb without checking alignment. A fence can follow the line but lean, or have plumb posts that wander off line. Inconsistent rail or picket elevations can make a run look wavy even when the posts are plumb.

Use repeatable references and recheck after any operation that can move a post. Correct errors before rails transfer them into adjacent bays.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

DIY may suit a simple fence where the route is clear, local requirements are understood, and the builder can handle the chosen system, layout and site conditions. Consider the full scope, including gates, tools, access, digging and safe work around marked utilities.

Consider a professional when the route or boundary is uncertain, the site has challenging slopes or soil, the fence has demanding gates or loads, or local rules and construction details are difficult to interpret. Ask for a written scope that identifies the fence system, materials, layout assumptions, gate details and work included.

Step-by-Step Wood Fence Build Sequence

Use this sequence for a conventional site-built fence, adapting it to the chosen system and site:

  1. Verify the route using available property-boundary evidence and check local, HOA, easement and site-specific rules.
  2. Request a utility locate and wait for the required response before digging.
  3. Choose the fence system, presentation side, gate locations, grade treatment and material specifications.
  4. Draw all terminals, gates, turns, tie-ins and grade breaks; plan gate swing and clearances.
  5. Set the terminal control points, checking their position relative to the intended fence face and their plumb in two directions.
  6. Stretch a taut, consistent reference line for each straight run.
  7. Divide each run according to the chosen system’s allowable span, accounting for actual components and openings.
  8. Set and brace posts, checking alignment, plumb and elevation; recheck after footing or backfill work.
  9. Install rails and check their plane across multiple bays before attaching boards or panels.
  10. Install boards or panels from a repeatable datum, checking the finished face as you go.
  11. Complete and test gates, then inspect alignment, plumb, elevation, swing and clearance across the finished run.
  12. Finish and maintain the wood according to its treatment, exposure and product instructions.

A fence that looks straight is the result of separate alignment, plumb and elevation checks carried through the job. Verify the route and system first, set control points, and recheck posts and rails before covering errors with boards.

FAQ

How do I keep a wood fence line straight?

Verify the route, set terminal control posts, and stretch a taut reference line for each straight run. Place posts consistently relative to that line and recheck both alignment and plumb as the posts are set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can posts be plumb while the fence is crooked?

Yes. Plumb checks whether each post is vertical; it does not show whether the posts follow the planned run. Use a reference line for alignment and check the rails and finished face for consistent elevation.

How far apart should wood fence posts be?

There is no one spacing for every fence. Follow the chosen fence system’s allowable bay or panel span and account for the materials, height, loads, gates and site conditions.

How deep should wood fence posts be?

Depth depends on the fence and post design, soil, frost conditions, wind exposure and local requirements. Confirm the appropriate installation detail for the project rather than relying on a universal rule of thumb.

Does concrete keep fence posts straight?

Not by itself. Posts still need correct placement, bracing and repeated alignment and plumb checks. Follow the specified footing method and recheck posts after placing its materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should a fence follow a slope?

Choose a compatible stepped or racked layout before setting post heights and rail positions. Establish the references for the chosen system first rather than improvising the transition bay by bay.
