Before planting, check that it is recommended in your area and choose a place where its runners can be contained: it spreads into nearby lawns and beds.
Choose a suitable site
Light
Shade to part shade is a dependable starting point. The University of Connecticut says bugleweed can grow in full shade, while its foliage color is usually best with at least 3–4 hours of sun daily. UF/IFAS says it grows best in shady locations; full sun may work in the northern part of its range when soil is fertile and stays moist but not soggy. These are regional observations, not a guarantee for every climate or cultivar. UConn Extension is not the source of this figure; see UConn Extension and UF/IFAS.
Soil and drainage
Aim for soil that holds some moisture but drains well. North Carolina State Extension and UConn caution against wet, heavy soil. UF/IFAS lists clay, sand, and loam as tolerated textures, but that does not mean persistently waterlogged ground is suitable. Good air circulation is also useful, especially in humid conditions. Plant and establish it
Space plants according to how quickly you want the area covered and how much room you can give the runners. UF/IFAS gives a general spacing of 6–12 inches; UConn recommends 6–9 inches for prompt cover in its New England guidance. Tighter spacing can fill the ground sooner, but plan to monitor the edges as the planting spreads.

Water new plants enough to establish them, adjusting for rainfall, soil drainage, and local weather rather than following a fixed calendar. UConn’s advice that alternative lawn plantings need adequate irrigation during one or two growing seasons is general establishment guidance, not a bugleweed-specific watering schedule. Manage spread and routine care
Bugleweed forms a mat and spreads by above-ground runners called stolons. Runners can move into lawns and neighboring beds, and established plants may be difficult to remove. Plant it where spreading is welcome or where you can inspect and remove unwanted runners before they take hold.

After flowering, remove old flower stems if you want a tidier planting. Thin crowded patches occasionally to improve airflow; this can help reduce stem-disease problems. In very humid conditions or heavy soils, crown rot is a concern. UF/IFAS also notes susceptibility to nematodes on sandy soils, but the cited guidance does not establish a universal treatment. Propagate by division
Division is the usual propagation method; UF/IFAS describes propagation by seed as rare, while North Carolina State Extension also lists seed as an option. To expand or renew a planting, divide established clumps and replant them at your chosen spacing. UF/IFAS · North Carolina State Extension

Check local suitability before planting
Bugleweed’s ecological status varies by region. North Carolina State Extension describes it as a low threat to native plant communities in North Carolina while noting invasive behavior elsewhere. UF/IFAS labels Ajuga reptans invasive and not recommended in its regional assessment, and UConn warns it can be invasive. Check local invasive-plant guidance, particularly if the planting is near natural areas.
Published hardiness ranges also differ: Illinois Extension lists USDA zones 3–9, while UF/IFAS lists zones 4–10A. Treat these as source-specific regional guidance, not a universal range for every cultivar or location. North Carolina State Extension · UF/IFAS · UConn Extension · Illinois Extension

Choose a cultivar
Cultivars offer different foliage and flower appearances, but a striking leaf color does not remove the need to consider site conditions and spread. North Carolina State Extension lists ‘Black Scallop’ for dark maroon leaves and ‘Burgundy Glow’ for tricolored foliage and blue flowers. Confirm the cultivar’s local suitability with a regional extension resource or knowledgeable seller before planting.
