An automated driveway gate is a complete access system—not just a gate opener. Safe operation depends on the gate, operator, entrapment-protection devices, and the layout around the gate. Choose a swing or slide configuration to suit the driveway, then have a qualified installer assess the site, specify compatible safeguards, and demonstrate emergency and manual operation at handover.
What makes up an automated driveway gate system?
A complete system includes the gate panel, its operator (the motor and control equipment), built-in protection that detects or limits unsafe operation, external protection devices, and any screening or barriers needed to address hazards. AutoGate explains these components in its system overview and standards guidance; consult the actual operator instructions and current standards for installation decisions.
The operator should be selected for the gate’s type, dimensions, weight, intended use, and site conditions. A motor’s ability to move a gate does not establish that the gate is suitable for automation or safe in its setting. Have an installer examine an existing manual gate and identify any needed repairs or modifications before choosing an operator.
Should you choose a swing or sliding gate?
There is no universally best configuration. The choice depends on driveway geometry and clearance, the gate’s dimensions and load, where the gate travels, nearby fixed objects and pedestrian routes, intended use, power and backup needs, and which safety devices are approved for the chosen operator.

| Configuration | Site considerations | Hazards to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal slide | Needs room for the gate to travel alongside the opening. Consider the full travel path, rollers, nearby walls or fences, and pedestrian access. | Rollers and gaps between the moving gate and fixed objects can create pinch or entrapment points. |
| Horizontal swing | Needs clearance for the gate leaf’s arc. Consider what lies within that arc and how people enter or leave the property. | Moving arms and the gate’s path can create scissoring or crushing hazards. |
DASMA recommends keeping pedestrians out of the gate’s path, guarding applicable pinch points, and providing a separate walk-through entrance where possible. Children should not be allowed to play near a moving gate or its operator.
What safety standards and sensors matter?
UL 325 and ASTM F2200 address different parts of the system. UL 325 concerns the automated operator and protection against entrapment; ASTM F2200 concerns gate construction and installation. They work together, but a summary cannot replace current standard documents, local code requirements, or the instructions for the selected operator. AutoGate’s explanation of the standards is available here; verify current requirements for your location and equipment.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Protection devices may include contact devices such as sensing edges and non-contact devices such as photo eyes. Devices must be approved for the installed operator. Their number and placement depend on the gate type, travel direction, operator instructions, and every potential entrapment zone at the site. Nice | HySecurity’s safety guidance describes minimum protection by gate type while emphasizing that a site survey may identify a need for additional devices.
LiftMaster’s guidance for its operators says two independent protection devices are required at each entrapment zone, with an inherent reversing system counting as one device; for its slide-gate operators, it describes at least two external monitored devices, one in each direction. These are manufacturer-specific statements, not a universal parts list. Ask the installer to explain the safeguards selected for each hazard and confirm their compatibility with the operator.

Do not bypass or continue using a system with a required safety device disconnected or malfunctioning. A photo eye or sensing edge is not a substitute for a site assessment, appropriate gate construction, or guarded pinch points.
Can you automate an existing manual gate?
Possibly, but first establish that the gate is suitable for automation and meets applicable construction and installation requirements. AutoGate says an existing manual gate must meet current ASTM F2200 requirements before automation. Have a qualified installer inspect its condition, movement, hardware, clearances, and hazards; repair or replace unsuitable components before fitting an operator.

What should installation and handover include?
Ask the installer to demonstrate the system rather than simply leave the controls behind. At handover, make sure you can:
- Identify the emergency stop, disconnect power, and open and close the gate manually.
- Use the normal controls and understand what to do if power is unavailable.
- See the obstruction-sensing and entrapment-protection features tested, including that the gate stops or reverses as intended.
- Locate the operator’s safety and maintenance instructions and understand the recommended service schedule.
For a gate that cannot be opened normally during an outage, follow the operator’s manual-disconnect procedure shown by the installer. Procedures differ by equipment, so do not assume that one release method applies to every gate.

How should an automated gate be maintained?
Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. DASMA recommends checking entrapment devices, confirming the gate remains level and travels smoothly by hand, inspecting hardware, replacing worn or damaged parts, and testing safety and obstruction features. Arrange service if movement becomes rough, a gate is out of level, hardware is damaged, or a safety device does not work correctly.
Quick Recap
What to ask before hiring an installer
- Is the existing gate appropriate for automation, and what repairs or changes are required?
- Which entrapment zones exist, and which operator-approved devices protect each one?
- How do the design and installation address pedestrians, children, pinch points, and the gate’s full path of motion?
- Which current standards, local codes, permits, and manufacturer instructions apply?
- Will you demonstrate emergency controls, manual operation, and safety-device testing at handover?
- What inspection and maintenance schedule does the operator manufacturer require?
