A fireplace can make a room feel like a gathering place, whether it burns wood, runs on electricity, or is simply an unused architectural opening. The right idea depends on what you can change: the surround, mantel, firebox, placement, or styling. Start by checking the existing opening and layout, deciding whether you want ambiance or heat, and accounting for fuel, installation, maintenance, and safety clearances.

Refresh the surround with material, color, or shape

A surround update can change the fireplace’s character without changing its location. For any work near an active firebox, confirm that the materials and assembly are suitable for that specific appliance; decorative inspiration is not an installation specification.

1. Repaint existing brick

Use a considered paint color to make dated brick feel intentional. Check the paint’s suitability for the surface and fireplace conditions before applying it.

2. Make natural stone the focal point

Stone gives the fireplace a substantial, traditional or rustic presence. Let its texture do the work rather than layering on competing finishes.

3. Reface with porcelain tile

Porcelain can give an old brick surround a cleaner face. The tile, backing, and installation assembly must be appropriate for the fireplace.

4. Add a small-scale mosaic

A mosaic brings pattern and detail to a compact surround. A restrained palette helps the pattern read clearly.

5. Choose a deliberate glass or ceramic mosaic

Pick one material family and a pattern that suits the room instead of combining unrelated finishes.

6. Let marble carry the design

A distinctive marble pattern can supply the visual interest on its own, especially in a room with otherwise quiet finishes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Frame the opening with geometric marble

Repeated rectangles or another orderly motif can suggest an Art Deco direction without requiring ornament everywhere.

8. Shape a sculptural plaster surround

A curved or softened silhouette makes the fireplace feel architectural. Confirm that the chosen plaster system is suitable for its location.

9. Try a copper-toned face

A warm metal or copper-like finish offers a less expected alternative to brick or stone.

10. Use slate or stainless steel for a contemporary look

These materials support a cleaner, more modern vocabulary. Their suitability depends on the exact fireplace and installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Keep a concrete-like face minimal

A quiet, smooth surround puts the firebox and its proportions at the center of attention.

12. Extend the fireplace wall to the ceiling

A full-height feature can make a contemporary fireplace read as part of the room’s architecture rather than a small insert in a wall.

13. Pair stone with wood elsewhere

Use timber furniture or other wood elements to soften a stone focal point and create a lodge-like mood. Treat the pairing as a design direction, not a construction detail.

14. Lighten masonry while keeping its texture

Whitewashing or painting can reduce the visual weight of masonry without hiding all of its surface character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

15. Color-block the surround

Give the trim a related but distinct wall color so the opening is defined without looking disconnected.

16. Paint the mantel to match the wall

A wall-color mantel blends into the room and lets art or the firebox take precedence.

20. Add a metal mantel shelf

A sleek metal line can contrast with textured brick or stone and give the fireplace a sharper profile.

Style the mantel and the space above it

Before adding art or objects above a working fireplace, check the appliance manual for required clearances and mounting guidance. Do not assume a mantel or decorative object is protected simply because it is above the opening.

21. Hang one oversized artwork

A single large piece makes a clear focal point above the mantel. Make sure its mounting and position are appropriate for the specific fireplace.

Several framed works can bring a painted fireplace wall into the larger room palette. Keep frames and artwork clear of heat and flame.

24. Align a three-piece picture grouping

A small, orderly trio reads as intentional without spreading art across the whole wall.

25. Use a low, wide mirror

A mirror can reflect daylight or lamplight into the room. Account for secure mounting and the fireplace’s required clearances.

26. Make a seasonal mantel edit

Swap a few lightweight objects through the year rather than rebuilding the display each season.

Shelves and a reading area make the fireplace part of a useful library corner. Keep books and other combustibles at safe distances from a working fire.

28. Display a few meaningful keepsakes

Let a small number of personal objects occupy the mantel instead of filling its entire length.

29. Try an asymmetric arrangement

Balance a taller object with a lower cluster, keeping the objects stable and safely positioned.

30. Use candlesticks only on a suitable cold hearth

Matched candlesticks can dress an unused fireplace. Do not place or burn candles close to an active fire or where they could ignite nearby materials.

31. Echo warm metals in nearby decor

Repeat brass, bronze, or copper in a lamp, frame, or fireplace tools to tie the mantel to the room.

32. Skip the mantel for a flatter profile

A contemporary fireplace can feel more integrated with little or no projecting shelf detail.

33. Give a mantel a plaster-like finish

ELLE DECOR reports designer Colette van den Thillart’s suggestion of gesso for a plaster-like effect. Check product suitability and surface conditions before use. ELLE DECOR’s fireplace ideas includes the design direction.

34. Consider paint before a major remodel

Paint may be a relatively simple visual refresh when the surface and product are suitable. As designer Rayman Boozer tells ELLE DECOR, “Paint remains the cheapest way to refresh anything,” affirms Boozer. The article attributes the advice to Boozer.

35. Repeat a trim color in art or textiles

Carry one fireplace color into a framed piece or nearby textile for continuity without matching every finish.

Choose a fireplace format or a new location

Fireplace formats are not interchangeable: a masonry fireplace, a prefabricated wood-burning unit, an insert, an electric wall unit, and a freestanding electric stove have different fit and installation needs. Treat these ideas as concepts to investigate against the building, appliance specifications, and applicable local requirements.

36. Add a wall-mounted electric focal point

A wall-mounted electric unit can suit a contemporary room and share a feature wall with other elements, subject to the manufacturer’s clearances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

37. Recess an electric fireplace

A flush-wall appearance may work where the wall and installation can accommodate the specified model and its electrical requirements.

38. Fit an electric insert to an existing opening

An insert may give an unused firebox a new visual role. Measure the opening and follow the exact model’s installation instructions.

39. Use a freestanding electric stove

A stove-like silhouette can create a traditional focal point without assuming it has the fuel or installation requirements of a wood-burning stove.

40. Go linear

A long, horizontal electric fireplace can anchor a contemporary feature wall. Check the model’s installation and clearance specifications.

41. Divide two zones with a two-sided fireplace

A double-sided design can visually connect adjacent seating areas. Its feasibility depends on the building and the chosen unit.

42. Connect living and dining areas

A fireplace between the spaces can act as a shared visual feature; placement and installation depend on the structure and appliance.

43. Bring a focal point into the dining room

A working fireplace can shape the room’s evening atmosphere. Where none exists, a faux mantel can create a visual feature without implying a working fire.

44. Make a library reading corner

Angle a reading chair toward the hearth and add shelves outside the fireplace’s clearance zone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

45. Add electric ambiance to a bedroom

Some electric fireplaces can show a flame effect without heat. Verify that the particular model supports flame-only operation and check its electrical and installation requirements.

46. Choose a focal point visible from several seating areas

In an open-plan room, consider the fireplace’s scale and sightlines from each zone rather than designing for one seat alone.

47. Create an outdoor patio hearth

Choose a fireplace specifically designed for outdoor conditions; an indoor model is not a substitute.

48. Turn a nonworking opening into a display niche

Compose a display for an unused firebox only after confirming that the appliance is genuinely decommissioned and safe for the intended use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

49. Install a faux fireplace mantel

A mantel and threshold can establish a visual anchor where no fireplace exists. Decorative logs belong only where their placement is appropriate and safe.

50. Integrate an electric fireplace into a media room

A media wall or cabinet can combine the fireplace with electronics, but follow manufacturer guidance for the fireplace and for the placement of nearby equipment.

Add comfort through seating, accessories, and light

Soft furnishings and decorative objects can make the fireplace area feel inviting, but they do not override appliance clearances. Keep combustibles, textiles, artwork, baskets, and greenery outside the zones specified for the particular fireplace.

51. Place a log basket beside a suitable hearth

Designer Colette van den Thillart suggests a basket of logs beside a gas, electric, or empty hearth as a styling device. ELLE DECOR quotes her: “Place a basket of logs beside any gas or electric (or even empty!) hearth, as it renders the effect more cozy and inviting.” This is decor advice, not fuel guidance; keep the basket away from heat and flame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

52. Layer neutral textiles around the seating area

A rug, throw, and soft upholstery add texture nearby. Keep them out of the fireplace’s clearance zone.

53. Angle a reading chair toward the hearth

Orient the seating for a view of the fireplace so it serves the room’s everyday layout, not just the mantel photograph.

54. Place two chairs across from the fire

Paired chairs create a conversation setting with the hearth as a shared center. Position them according to the unit’s clearances.

55. Contrast warm wood furniture with stone

Furniture with a wood finish can soften the hard, substantial look of a stone surround.

56. Restrain the material palette

Use a few finishes and let one distinctive surround stand out. ELLE DECOR quotes A-list designer Rayman Boozer: “The key to any successful contemporary design is to limit the number of materials used and let them be the story.” Read the designer’s advice.

57. Keep the surround quiet and layer the room

Choose simple fireplace architecture, then create softness with seating, textiles, and lamps positioned safely away from heat and flame.

58. Treat a tool set as part of the decor

A poker, tongs, shovel, or andirons can coordinate with the room’s metal finishes while remaining useful at a functioning wood-burning hearth.

59. Choose a decorative screen that works as a screen

A screen can complement the room while helping contain escaping sparks and embers. Indiana’s Department of Homeland Security recommends a sturdy screen for a wood fire; select one suited to the opening, not just the pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

60. Use an Art Deco screen pattern

Graphic geometry can add a small-scale design accent to a traditional or contemporary fireplace.

61. Pick a woodland screen motif

A nature-inspired pattern can reinforce a room’s woodland or rustic theme.

62. Add brass-toned tools

Warm metal tools can support traditional or classic decor.

63. Choose bronze or copper tool accents

Darker bronze or warmer copper tones can suit industrial and modern interiors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

64. Light the seating zone with lamps

Soft room lighting keeps the corner useful when the fire is off. Place lamps and cords according to their own safety instructions and away from heat.

65. Use flame-only electric mode when available

Some electric fireplaces allow the flame effect without heat. For example, Dimplex describes electric units with flame-only operation; confirm the feature and settings in the documentation for the exact model. Dimplex’s electric fireplace information describes its product formats and operation.

66. Add greenery only to a cool, safe hearth

A simple seasonal arrangement can dress an unused fireplace. Keep greenery, dried botanicals, and other combustible decor away from an operating fireplace.

67. Arrange the room around the fireplace’s scale

Use seating, art, and supporting decor to make the fireplace the focal point, whether it is a working fire, an electric feature, or a nonworking architectural element.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide whether you want ambiance, heat, or both

A fireplace’s appearance does not tell you how it will heat a room. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s historic Burn Wise guidance says most traditional open fireplaces lose over 90 percent of the fire’s heat up the chimney; that statement concerns traditional open fireplaces, not every fireplace product. EPA identifies the Burn Wise content as historical and no longer updated after October 30, 2025. The page also says properly installed fireplace retrofit devices reduce pollution by approximately 70 percent; that is a pollution figure, not a heat-efficiency claim or a guarantee for a particular device. EPA’s fireplace and retrofit guidance.

If you are considering an electric fireplace, installation varies: Dimplex says some units plug into a standard outlet, while built-in models can be hardwired. The exact model’s instructions govern; do not assume a plug-in unit and a built-in unit have the same electrical or installation needs. Dimplex’s product information covers wall-mount, built-in, and linear formats.

Keep the design within safe operating limits

Decorative decisions should follow the fireplace or stove manufacturer’s manual and applicable local requirements. Clearances vary by appliance and installation, so there is no universal distance for art, textiles, baskets, or furniture. For general wood- and gas-fireplace precautions, Indiana’s Department of Homeland Security recommends:

  • Have chimneys regularly cleaned and inspected by a certified professional.
  • Burn dry, seasoned wood and use a sturdy screen with a wood fire.
  • Keep the damper open while hot ashes remain; extinguish a fire before sleeping or leaving.
  • Do not use flammable liquid fire starters, and keep an extinguisher nearby.
  • For gas fireplaces, ensure proper ventilation and keep a working carbon monoxide detector nearby.

These are general precautions, not a substitute for the specific appliance instructions. Indiana DHS reports 332 deaths in U.S. home heating equipment fires between 2019 and 2023, attributing the figure to the National Fire Protection Association; the statistic covers space heaters and heating stoves, not fireplaces alone. Indiana DHS alternative-heating safety guidance.

Shortlist ideas that fit your project

Use the scale of the change you want to narrow the options:

  • Cosmetic refresh: Consider suitable paint, a mantel edit, artwork, tools, or a screen for an existing fireplace.
  • New visual feature: Explore a faux mantel or a display niche only if the opening is confirmed safe for that use.
  • New appliance or fuel change: Compare the opening and layout with the exact unit’s installation requirements, electrical or fuel needs, maintenance, and local requirements before choosing a format.
  • Room-comfort update: Plan seating, textiles, and lighting around the hearth while preserving the clearances for the appliance.
