There is no single official definition of “eco-friendly” laundry detergent, and the available evidence does not establish which of these seven options cleans best. A practical shortlist is to look for clearly scoped standards such as EPA Safer Choice or EWG Verified, then choose by scent, dosing format, washer instructions, and the package you can realistically recycle or refill. The products below are candidates from NBC Select’s guide, updated November 11, 2024—not results of a head-to-head cleaning test. Product formulas, labels, and packaging may change, so check the current product details before buying.
What “eco-friendly” means in this guide
“Eco-friendly,” “green,” and “natural” do not have one universal product definition. Treat them as marketing language unless a specific, verifiable standard or attribute is named. Even a recognized label covers defined criteria; it is not proof that a product has zero environmental impact.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Safer Choice Standard, posted as current in August 2024, evaluates ingredients within their functional classes and favors ingredients with lower hazard characteristics within each class while supporting product performance. It does not mean “chemical-free”: detergent ingredients are chemicals, and they perform jobs such as cleaning, dissolving materials, or managing water hardness. The EPA also addresses packaging criteria for continuous delivery systems, but that does not establish that every package in this shortlist is environmentally preferable overall. Read the EPA Safer Choice Standard for the scope of the criteria.
This guide compares named product attributes and practical fit, not environmental impact across a product’s full life cycle. NBC Select’s November 2024 guide is the source for the seven candidates and their reported attributes; it says its featured products were HE-safe at the time. Those details are not a current certification audit or a guarantee that every variant still has the same label, formula, or packaging.

How to choose between labels, scents, and formats
Check what a label actually covers
EPA Safer Choice and EWG Verified are distinct marks, not interchangeable guarantees. Confirm that the exact product variant you are considering currently carries the mark, and consult the standard or program criteria to understand its scope. A formula claim for one product should not be transferred to another product from the same brand.
For example, Seventh Generation’s Power+ manufacturer page describes a different detergent from the Free & Clear packs in the table. The manufacturer claims 97% bio-based ingredients, EPA Safer Choice certification, and recyclable packaging for Power+; those claims do not establish the same attributes for the Free & Clear packs. The Power+ page also lists ingredients including enzymes, surfactants, preservatives, and plant-derived fragrance for its clean-scent formula, and links to a fragrance-free variant. Decide whether you want fragrance
Fragrance-free, unscented, and scented are not always equivalent descriptions. Use the exact wording on the product label and ingredient information rather than assuming that “natural” or plant-derived fragrance is allergy-free. The shortlist includes both fragrance-free options and an eucalyptus-scented liquid; the right choice depends on your preference and sensitivities.
Match the format to how you do laundry
- Liquid: A familiar option if you prefer pouring and adjusting a dose; use the product’s measuring instructions.
- Powder: Requires measuring or scooping, as with Charlie’s Soap.
- Pods or packs: Pre-portioned, but dose flexibility may be limited; Dropps may require multiple pods for larger loads.
- Tablets: Dry and pre-portioned, with storage and refill details that should be confirmed for the current Blueland set.
The available sources do not establish that any one format has the lowest overall environmental impact. Choose based on your dosing habits, storage, wash routine, and packaging priorities rather than assuming format alone settles the question.

Read package claims literally
Recycled content, recyclable packaging, compostable material, a refill pouch, and a reusable container describe different things. A recyclable package is not necessarily accepted in your local collection, and a compostable pouch may require access to an appropriate composting service. The shortlist’s package descriptions are source-reported claims, not a measured comparison of what happens to each package after use.
Check washer and water instructions
NBC Select said its featured detergents were HE-safe when its guide was published, but check the current label for your specific product and washer. Follow the product’s dosing and temperature instructions; the guide specifically noted that Seventh Generation Free & Clear packs are best used in warm water.

Which one performs best?
The cited material does not provide controlled comparative cleaning results for these seven products. It therefore cannot support a claim that one is the best performer for stains, odor, value, or general cleaning. If cleaning performance is your deciding factor, compare current package directions and ingredients for your use case, and look for independent testing that directly evaluates the exact variants you are considering; do not infer a winner from a certification or package claim.
