A reel is a purpose-built option; cardboard is an easy no-cost alternative. There is no established test showing one method works best for everyone.
How to store Christmas lights without tangling
- Unplug and take down the lights carefully. Avoid pulling a strand down by its cord or yanking tangled sections apart.
- Keep each strand separate. Wind one strand at a time around its own reel or cardboard holder instead of bundling loose strands together.
- Secure both ends. Fasten the beginning and end so the coil cannot unwind. On cardboard, opposing slits or notches can hold the ends in place.
- Contain the coils separately. Put them in a suitable bin or individual resealable bags. Store any matching spare bulbs or parts with their strand.
- Choose a dry, safe storage spot. Labeling each coil with its location or use is a helpful way to find the right strand next season.
Martha Stewart’s January 3, 2025 guide describes reels, cardboard holders, and resealable bags as options for keeping lights ready to hang (Martha Stewart). The Home Depot also recommends original packaging or a light-storage container and a dry, safe storage area (The Home Depot).
Choose a reel or cardboard holder

Martha Stewart describes dedicated reels as a popular storage method, while Bandera Electric Cooperative recommends a storage wheel or notched cardboard (Bandera Electric Cooperative). Homes & Gardens also reports a cardboard winding method attributed to organizer Olivia Parks (Homes & Gardens).
Make a cardboard holder
- Cut a rectangle from spare cardboard large enough to wrap the strand around.
- Cut a small slit or notch near each end to hold the light strand’s beginning and end.
- Wind one strand around the board, then tuck its ends into the notches so the coil stays put.
- Place the holder in a bin or bag, separate from other strands.
Keep the stored strands easy to identify
Store each wound strand in its own resealable bag or separated section of a divided container. A container designed for holiday lights may have fasteners to secure cords and dividers to keep them apart; original packaging can also work if it holds the coil securely. Add a simple label, such as “porch” or “tree,” if that will help you choose the right set next season.
