Most can be grown in containers as well as garden beds; indoors, separate pots and good light make care easier.
Which herbs are easiest to grow for beginners?
Start with a few herbs you already use in cooking. These are commonly recommended choices, not a guarantee that every one will thrive in every climate or room.
- Basil: A useful leafy herb to grow in a sunny outdoor spot or a bright indoor location.
- Chives: A versatile choice for pots or beds; snip the leaves as needed.
- Parsley: A culinary staple that can be grown from seed or as a young plant.
- Mint: Suitable for containers or beds, but give it its own pot if you want to keep its care separate.
- Oregano and thyme: Common culinary options; use well-draining soil and choose a spot with suitable light.
- Cilantro: Iowa State Extension includes it among herbs that can be grown indoors, though indoor conditions differ from home to home.

What herbs can I grow in pots?
Herbs can grow in containers as well as in garden beds. Choose a pot with drainage holes and use a well-draining potting mix; a container that stays waterlogged makes it harder to manage root health. Iowa State Extension recommends growing each herb species in its own indoor container because different herbs may have different needs. The same approach is useful when you are learning how often to water each plant.

For an outdoor patio or balcony, group pots where they receive appropriate light, but keep each species in a container that lets you manage it separately. For a windowsill, first check that the spot is bright enough for the chosen herb rather than assuming any window will do.

Can I grow herbs indoors on a windowsill?
Yes, if the herbs get enough light. Iowa State Extension says light is often the limiting factor indoors and notes that some herbs need supplemental light. A dim windowsill may not be suitable for every culinary herb. Match the plant to the light available, and consider a small grow-light setup if natural light is inadequate. Should I start herbs from seeds or buy plants?
Either is a reasonable starting point. Seeds let you grow herbs from the beginning; young plants give you a more established start. Iowa State Extension notes that common herb seeds such as basil, parsley and dill are usually available from seed dealers, while less common seeds may require specialist suppliers. The Royal Horticultural Society likewise describes growing herbs from seed or buying young plants. Its sowing dates are UK-specific, so use local guidance for timing rather than applying those dates everywhere.

Harvest according to the plant rather than applying one cutting rule to every herb. Iowa State Extension advises removing only the top third or leafy tip growth from perennial herbs. Its indoor guidance says leafy annuals such as basil, chervil and parsley can be cut back more severely. Check species-specific advice when you are unsure how much to remove.

How to choose your first herbs
- Choose the location: Decide whether the herbs will grow indoors, outdoors or in containers.
- Check the light: Match your available sunlight or grow-light setup to the herbs you select.
- Plan for drainage: Use a pot with drainage holes and a well-draining mix for container growing.
- Keep care manageable: Use separate pots when growing different species, especially indoors.
- Pick herbs you will use: A small selection you cook with is more useful than a large planter of herbs you rarely harvest.
