A rolling collector is for fruit already on the ground, while berries on bushes need a crop-specific tool choice: a standard tree-fruit picker is not automatically suitable.
Which fruit picker should you use?

How to choose a pole-mounted picker for tree fruit
Match the head to the fruit and picking action
Common pole pickers use fingers or prongs to detach fruit into a bag or basket. They are useful for fruit that can be plucked or hooked without excessive force, but they are not universal. Village Harvest identifies clippers as its preferred tool for tender-skinned citrus such as lemons and tangerines, where pulling may damage the skin; its suitability chart does not list cherries or figs as pole-picker crops. Check actual reach and control
Village Harvest estimates that a 12-foot extension picker can make it possible to harvest a tree up to 18 feet tall. That is a guide estimate, not a reach guarantee: your height, pole angle, branch position, and control of the extended tool affect what you can reach. A long pole can be harder to maneuver, so consider weight and head orientation as well as maximum extension.
Confirm the pole connection before buying
Some picker heads are sold separately. Lee Valley’s HK300 has rounded metal fingers and a cotton bag; its listed dimensions are 10 inches long with a 4-inch opening. It attaches to a standard broom handle, but the pole is not included. The product page describes it for apples, pears, peaches, and plums: Lee Valley’s Fruit Picker details.

EZ Smart describes its picker as a foldable attachment with a foam-cushioned basket for poles using standard 3/4-inch Acme threading. The manufacturer lists apples, avocados, pears, mangoes, citrus, and other fruits, and specifies fruit up to 5.6 inches in diameter. When to use clippers or picking shears
Use hand clippers for reachable fruit that should be cut from the stem rather than tugged loose. Pole-mounted cut-and-hold shears can help with out-of-reach fruit, but plan how to catch it. FAO guidance calls for sharp cutting tools and notes that long-pole cutting tools can help harvest difficult-to-reach mangoes and avocados. It also warns that cut fruit allowed to fall can be severely bruised. Use a catching bag or another careful method to prevent a drop. Read the FAO harvesting and preparation guidance.

Protect fruit after picking
Choose a head with a bag or cushioning suited to the fruit, then place the harvest gently into a bucket or bag rather than dropping it. University of Maine Cooperative Extension describes padded picking-bag interiors as a way to reduce bruising and advises placing fruit rather than dropping it. Cherry stems need special consideration
In an Oregon State University Extension Service response, Master Gardener Anna Ashby cautioned that basket-picker tines may pull stems from cherries, reducing storage quality. The response advises using or preserving cherries within a day or two if their stems are removed. For cherry harvesting, consult Oregon State Extension’s answer on cherry picking.

Use a rolling collector for fallen fruit
A rolling collector gathers windfalls from the lawn; it does not reach fruit still attached to a branch. Gardens Illustrated describes the Gardena Combi System collector as connecting to its compatible multitool handle and having a side spout for fruit near tree trunks. Choose a separate tool for berries on bushes
Do not assume that a tree-fruit pole picker or a generic berry rake will suit raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, or other bush fruit. A rake can damage some berries, and the available evidence does not establish which rake design suits each common berry. Look for guidance specific to the berry species and its ripeness before choosing a picker. Use pole tools with care
- Follow the picker and pole manufacturer’s limits, and check the connection is secure before raising the tool.
- Watch for overhead branches and power lines while positioning a long pole.
- Choose a tool designed for the fruit and harvest method rather than forcing a basket picker onto fruit that should be clipped or hand-picked.
A pole picker can help reach fruit while standing on the ground, but it does not make every harvesting situation risk-free. For the safest choice, prioritize a manageable reach, a compatible head, and a way to prevent fruit from falling after detachment.
