Why plastic wrap does not belong in a conventional oven

Microwave-safe does not mean oven-safe
A microwave-safe label applies to microwave use under the product’s instructions; it does not make the wrap suitable for a conventional oven. USDA FSIS describes microwave-safe wrap as a cover that should not touch food and should be vented. Reynolds’ instructions for its Quick Cut wrap specify leaving at least one inch between wrap and food, venting one corner, and reheating for no longer than three minutes. These products have different purposes: paper or foil may line or cover, while an oven bag encloses food. Check the exact package for appliance suitability and temperature limits rather than assuming all products of the same material have identical ratings.

If plastic packaging accidentally went into the oven
USDA FSIS says that in the accidental cases it discusses, packaging that remains unaltered does not pose an imminent health hazard. If it melted or changed shape, do not use the food. This narrow guidance about accidental exposure is not permission to cook food in plastic wrap; if your situation differs or the packaging’s condition is unclear, do not stretch that guidance beyond its stated circumstances. Check the exact product label
Food-contact materials are designed for particular uses. Reynolds’ guidance for its named wrap and USDA’s guidance for oven bags should not be generalized to every film, bag, or specialty product. Use a product in an oven only when its manufacturer explicitly says it is suitable for that appliance and temperature.
