Why choose an open toy storage basket?
The Public Health Agency of Canada names open storage, including baskets and canvas bins, as an option for organizing a baby’s toys. An open top makes toys easy to see and reach without lifting a lid. This is category-level guidance, not a safety assessment of any particular basket or a guarantee that a product is suitable for every child or room.

What to compare before buying
- Dimensions and capacity: Check the basket’s internal space against the toys you intend to store, and confirm it fits where you plan to put it.
- Opening and access: Consider whether a child or caregiver can reach toys easily without needing to move or remove a cover.
- Stability: Think about whether the basket is likely to stay upright when partly filled and toys are taken out.
- Material and cleaning: Choose a material whose care requirements suit the room and the kinds of items being stored.
- Handles: If you will move the basket between rooms, check whether its handles make it manageable when loaded.

Why lids and toy chests need extra care
A lidded toy chest is not interchangeable with an open basket from a safety perspective. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission identifies pinching, crushing, laceration and suffocation hazards associated with toy chests. Its 2012 publication advises: “Use a toy chest that has a lid that will stay open in any position to which it is raised, and will not fall unexpectedly on a child.” It also advises ventilation and checking for sharp edges and pinching hinges. What toy-safety rules do—and do not—say about baskets
The CPSC says ASTM F963 is a mandatory toy safety standard under 16 C.F.R. part 1250, and identifies ASTM F963-23 for toys manufactured after April 20, 2024. This applies to covered children’s toys and their certification duties; it is not blanket proof that a toy storage basket is certified or safe. The CPSC’s small-parts ban applies to certain products intended for children under three when small parts present a choking, aspiration or ingestion hazard.
