Leave ice on trees and shrubs to melt naturally. Knocking, shaking, or prying it off can break branches that might otherwise recover, and working beneath ice-loaded limbs can put you in danger. Once the ice is gone, inspect the plant and handle only small, safely reachable damage; call a qualified arborist for hazardous or difficult work.
What to do while ice remains
- Keep people away from ice-loaded branches that could break or shed material. Do not stand beneath a limb to strike it.
- Do not shake, beat, rake, or pry ice from branches. Avoid applying heat or de-icing products, which can harm the plant. Nebraska Forest Service guidance recommends letting ice melt naturally.
- Keep clear of limbs touching or near power lines. Do not try to remove them; contact the utility and a qualified tree-care professional. Michigan DNR specifically warns against removing limbs on or near power lines.
- If a tree or shrub seems unstable or threatens people or property, keep clear and seek professional advice rather than trying to support or reposition it under load.
Ice and loose snow need different treatment
Advice about sweeping snow does not apply to bonded ice. If loose snow is weighing down a shrub, a gentle upward sweep with a broom may remove it. Stop if the material does not dislodge easily; do not beat an ice-covered plant with a broom or rake. Illinois Extension distinguishes loose snow from ice, and Iowa State Extension cautions against beating ice-covered branches.
What to check after the ice melts
Bent but unbroken branches
Wait until thaw to judge their shape. A bent branch is not necessarily broken, and some bent shrubs or branches may return toward their normal position after the load is gone. Avoid cutting simply because a branch is temporarily out of place. University of Maryland Extension and Illinois Extension both advise that bent plants may recover after thaw.
Broken or split branches
Look for branches that are visibly broken or split. Prune only work that is small, reachable from the ground, and safe for you to do. If you are unsure whether a limb is damaged or how to remove it safely, ask an arborist for an assessment. Maryland Extension advises pruning broken and split branches; Michigan DNR advises careful assessment and pruning after the storm.

High, heavy, or hazardous limbs
Leave climbing, chainsaw work, large hanging limbs, and damage near utilities to qualified professionals. The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry recommends licensed and insured arborists for difficult work. Nebraska Forest Service recommends a certified arborist when a tree’s safety or health is uncertain.
Why you may find conflicting advice
An older University of Illinois Extension article describes a narrow exception for a specimen plant no higher than 15 feet: carefully tapping the ends of branches with a stick or pole. That is not general advice, and the same article recognizes the risk of breakage and of standing under loaded branches. More recent guidance from Michigan DNR and other Extension sources recommends not knocking or shaking branches, so the safer general approach is to leave ice in place.

Iowa State Extension discusses supporting a sharply bent small tree in some circumstances, but says not to push ice-covered branches upright. Support or repositioning under ice load is not a reason to remove ice; if it seems necessary, keep clear and consult an arborist.
