Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo mill lumber with a Wood-Mizer portable sawmill, inspect and plan the log, set up and level the mill according to its exact model manual, secure the log, set the head for your board thickness, and make controlled cuts while monitoring blade condition. After sawing, stack and dry the boards for their intended use. Wood-Mizer has multiple mill designs, so setup, clamping, blade tensioning, and lubrication details must come from the manual for your machine.
1. Inspect the log and plan the boards
Walk around the log and inspect all four faces for knots, scars, insect damage, rot, seams, and splits. Decide which faces can produce the clearest boards. Rotating the log to concentrate defects on one face can leave more useful clear wood; defects near a board edge may be removed when trimming. Severely decayed or unsuitable wood may not be worth milling.
Choose board dimensions and the final usable length before cutting. Allow extra length at each end so you can trim checks or damaged ends later. If estimating potential yield, remember that board-foot log rules produce different estimates and do not guarantee the lumber recovered. For example, Ed Neuhauser’s September 18, 2025 Wood-Mizer article estimates an illustrative 11-inch small-end red pine log, 10 feet long, at 31 board feet by Doyle, 40 by Scribner Decimal C, and 45 by International 1/4-inch. Those are estimates for that example, not a promise of finished-board yield.
For that example, the article measures the narrow end inside the bark when estimating full-length yield. Actual recovery also depends on defects, saw kerf, board sizes, and how the log is cut. Read the Wood-Mizer log inspection and milling guidance.

2. Set up the mill using its model-specific manual
Choose stable ground, level the mill without twisting its frame, and follow the current operator manual for your exact model and configuration. Keep people clear of the loading and turning area, and use the mill’s prescribed procedures for loading, clamping, and operation. Do not transfer setup or safety steps from another Wood-Mizer model.
For example, a 1987–91 LT30/40 manual warns against setting up on an incline greater than 10 degrees, calls for trailer wheels to be chocked before unhitching, and specifies that the trailer support the frame when adjustable outriggers are used. These are instructions from that legacy manual, not universal rules for every portable mill. Consult the LT30/40 Master manual only if it applies to your machine; otherwise, use the manual for your model.

3. Load, orient, and secure the log
A level landing near the mill makes log handling easier. Wood-Mizer’s general guidance recommends placing the smaller end toward the sawyer when the goal is to cut full-length boards. Rotate the log so the clearest usable faces are positioned for the planned cuts, then support and secure it with the mill’s clamps and side supports before sawing.
Clamping hardware varies by model. As one example, Wood-Mizer’s LT15 product page describes two adjustable quick-set log clamps and six adjustable side supports; do not assume another mill has the same arrangement. Check the LT15 specifications or the corresponding page and manual for your mill.

- Band Saw Blade Compatibility: 158" sawmill blades are compatible with Wood-Mizer, Harbor Freight, Frontier, Timbery, TMG Industrial Mills. If your sawmill has the same specifications as a 158" sawmill blade, you can safely choose it
- Specifications: Length 158 inches, width 1-1/4 inches, rake angle 10°, pitch 7/8 inches, thickness 0.042 inches
- High-quality: Using high-density alloy steel and high-precision welding machine technology, the saw blade is not easy to break. After 1200°C high temperature quenching and annealing, the hardness, softness and wear resistance are stronger. Repeated stretching, traction, and coiling, the saw blade is smoother and tougher
- High Efficiency and Longer Life: 10° alloy steel serration, with good impact resistance and chip removal ability, greatly improve the sawing efficiency, you can complete the sawing work in less time. Made of high-quality alloy steel and multi-precision craftsmanship, the 158-inch sawmill blade can easily accompany you to spend more time sawing
- Run-in: After the new saw blade is installed, adjust the feed of the sawmill to half of the high-speed sawing, and the sawing work can fully grind off the burrs between the teeth without hurting the saw blade for 2-3 hours
4. Set board thickness and prepare the blade
Choose a cutting plan
Set the head for the board thickness you planned, using the scale and adjustment method for your mill. The LT15 product page specifies 32 locking positions on its crank, with a 1/16-inch blade-depth change per notch and a quarter scale marked from 4/4 through 8/4. Those controls and increments apply to the LT15, not every Wood-Mizer sawmill.
Check tension, cleanliness, and lubrication
Use your model’s manual for blade installation, tension, and lubrication. Wood-Mizer’s February 24, 2023 guide says that on the LT15, LT28, and LT35, the tension throw handle should be down during blade installation, then raised and locked; the stated indicator is that the bolt head aligns with the orange washer. The LT70 uses a different process involving its air-bag pressure and gauge information. Follow the instructions and labels for your own machine rather than applying one model’s tensioning method to another. See Wood-Mizer’s model-specific blade-tensioning guide.

Keep the blade clean and use only the lubrication method specified for the mill. Wood-Mizer’s general milling article notes that resinous sawdust on softwoods can build up and contribute to a blade diving or producing poor lumber; dripping water can reduce buildup. Its LT15 page describes gravity-fed lubrication to cool the blade and help keep pitch, sap, and sawdust from accumulating. The exact lubricant and operating instructions remain model-specific.
Wood-Mizer’s LT15 product page lists a 158-inch blade and recommends keeping at least 10 blades on hand to reduce downtime while blades are being sharpened. These are LT15-specific published details, not a universal blade length or inventory recommendation. Confirm blade length and profile compatibility before buying replacements.

5. Make the cuts and check each board
Begin with a slab cut to remove the outside section, then turn or reposition the log as needed to establish a stable cant—the squared central material left after slab wood is removed from the outer sides. Continue cutting to the planned dimensions, checking each board as it comes off.
Watch for blade wandering, buildup, and defects in the boards. If the blade wanders or the cut quality changes, stop and diagnose the cause using the manual for your mill rather than trying to compensate blindly with head settings. Blade condition, tension, cleanliness, and the log itself can all affect the cut.
6. Organize, stack, and dry the lumber
Plan where boards will go before milling so handling finished lumber does not interrupt work at the mill. Sort boards by dimensions, species, quality, or intended use as appropriate, and choose an air- or kiln-drying approach suited to the stock and project.
There is no single drying schedule or moisture target established for all lumber. Species, thickness, intended use, and drying method matter; use a suitable drying reference for those details. Wood-Mizer’s resource index includes an introductory kiln-drying guide, but the right process depends on the lumber being dried. Browse Wood-Mizer’s lumber resources.
