Michigan State University Extension says “Nothing is totally effective.” Its list is useful for choosing what to plant, not proof that these are nine independently tested squirrel repellents.
Plants squirrels may be less inclined to eat or disturb
Michigan State University Extension’s August 1, 2024 Ask Extension response names the following plants and bulbs as less attractive to squirrels. The examples include overlapping members of the onion family, rather than nine distinct, proven repellents.
- Hot peppers: Named among the plants squirrels may find less attractive.
- Garlic: An onion-family plant included on the list.
- Onions: Also included among the less-attractive choices.
- Garlic chives: Named separately; the response cautions that they can be aggressive in a garden.
- Other alliums: The source includes other members of this plant group.
- Geraniums: Listed as a less-attractive ornamental.
- Lily of the valley: Listed, with a source-specific warning that it can be aggressive. Check whether it is suitable for your location before planting.
- Galanthus (snowdrops): These bulbs appear on the list.
- Hyacinths and daffodils: Both are named bulb examples.
The source does not rank these choices or give a success rate. Illinois Extension likewise says there are no vegetables that are truly squirrel-proof. [Michigan State University Extension, Ask Extension; Illinois Extension]
Why planting choices may not stop garden damage
Squirrels may eat plants, but they also dig while caching food. Changing nearby plantings will not necessarily protect exposed seeds, bulbs, pots, or loose soil. The most direct response to digging is often a physical barrier placed where squirrels are getting in.

How to protect seeds, bulbs, pots, and beds
Cover vulnerable soil with metal mesh
Ask Extension guidance recommends metal barriers for digging and prefers metal mesh to plastic netting. Fit hardware cloth or garden wire mesh over the vulnerable bed or container so squirrels cannot readily reach the soil. Nebraska Extension recommends 1/2-inch wire mesh around plants and chicken wire over newly planted seeds or bulbs. Choose and fit the barrier for the specific bed or pot rather than assuming one size works everywhere. [Ask Extension; Nebraska Extension]
Use taste repellents cautiously
Repellents may discourage chewing, but results vary. Follow the product label, including directions for reapplication and restrictions on edible crops. Penn State cautions that its capsaicin product should be used on edible crops only when the produce is not present. [Penn State Extension]

Reduce food incentives where practical
Nebraska Extension suggests considering other food sources, such as bird feeders, when squirrels are frequent visitors. Removing or managing an attractant may make the area less rewarding, but it does not ensure squirrels will leave. [Nebraska Extension]
Avoid sticky gels for wildlife control
An Ask Extension response warns that sticky gels can endanger birds and damage the surfaces they are applied to. They are a poor choice for protecting a garden from squirrels. [Ask Extension]

Plant choices are one part of a garden strategy. For digging damage, a properly fitted barrier targets the exposed soil directly; for chewing, a label-compliant repellent may be an option.
