Work on Glasgow’s former Meat Market site is expected to start imminently, but no firm start date has been confirmed. At a city policy committee, an unnamed council official said the developers were seeking to get on site, while noting the start could be a week or a month away. The council report cited in the coverage said an initial phase focused on refurbishment of the historic structure was due to begin in autumn 2026. Glasgow View reported the update on 2 October 2026.
What is planned for the former Glasgow Meat Market site?
The redevelopment is planned as a multi-phase scheme, beginning with work to consolidate and refurbish the listed historic shed structure. Later phases are expected to add new-build accommodation and a linear park. The wider proposal also includes community and business space, as well as padel courts. These uses are planned components; the reported update does not give a detailed construction sequence or dates for each later phase.
When will work start, and when is the project due to finish?
“Imminently” is an expectation, not confirmation that construction has started. The unnamed council official quoted at the committee did not specify a date, saying the start might be in the next week or month. Separately, the council report was quoted as saying the initial refurbishment-focused phase was due to commence on site in autumn 2026. The published overall completion target is 2029; it is a target, not a guaranteed delivery date.
Who is behind the regeneration?
The redevelopment body identified in the October 2026 report is the Meat Market Regeneration Community Interest Company. The update was discussed by Glasgow’s economy, housing, transport and regeneration city policy committee after Dennistoun councillor Anthony Carroll requested an update. The report quoted a council official saying the developers had funding in place, but did not name that official.

What is known about the funding?
An earlier report, published on 6 August 2025, described a City Deal grant of nearly £4.5 million and said £1.9 million was contributed by each of the UK and Scottish governments. Those are figures reported for the grant announcement, not a confirmed total current project cost. The 2025 report also described the planned scheme’s scope. Why has the site been vacant?
The Glasgow Meat Market dates to 1879 and closed in the 1980s. The site became vacant in the 1990s after a car auction operating there closed. The current regeneration plan therefore combines the conservation of the listed market sheds with new accommodation and public, community, business and sports uses.
