To keep ladybugs out, seal exterior cracks and gaps and repair screens before beetles gather on the house in fall. Pay particular attention to windows, doors, siding, trim, attic and exhaust vents, foundations, and the places pipes and wires enter. If beetles are already indoors, vacuum or gently sweep them up and empty the vacuum promptly.
Which “ladybugs” come inside?
The fall invader commonly called a ladybug is often the multicolored Asian ladybird beetle (Harmonia axyridis). Adults gather on buildings while seeking protected places to overwinter. They may enter wall or attic spaces and later appear indoors, sometimes around lights or windows when warmed. They are outdoor predators and do not ordinarily reproduce inside homes, according to Virginia Tech’s species guidance, revised July 16, 2025.
How to prevent beetles from getting in
Start before beetles begin gathering in fall; the right timing varies with local weather and region. Virginia Cooperative Extension identifies limiting indoor access before fall congregation as the key to managing them inside buildings (“Ladybird Beetles in Houses and Buildings,” December 21, 2021). Work around the whole exterior, including upper levels and attic openings.
- Inspect likely entry points. Check window and door frames, siding and trim joints, foundation cracks, attic and exhaust vents, and openings where utility pipes, cables, or wires pass through walls. Look in attic and basement areas as well.
- Seal gaps that should be closed. Use an appropriate caulk or other repair material for small cracks around frames, trim, and utility penetrations. Virginia Tech recommends caulk or expanding foam for suitable foundation gaps. Larger openings may need a different repair; choose a material compatible with the surface and exposure, and get professional help for repairs beyond your skill or safe reach.
- Repair screens and improve the fit. Patch holes in window and door screens and make sure the screens fit tightly. Add suitable insect screening to attic or exhaust vents where ventilation must remain open; do not block a vent that needs to function.
- Close indoor routes from voids where practical. Seal suitable gaps between wall or attic spaces and living areas so beetles that have entered a void are less likely to emerge indoors.
- Check doors and windows for loose fit. Where a door or window does not close tightly, appropriate weatherstripping can reduce the gap.
Choose repairs for the opening

Thorough pest-proofing can take time and may not prevent every beetle from entering; Iowa State Extension cautions that comprehensive exclusion is not always fully effective (“Lady Beetles and Flies in the Home”).

What to do about beetles already indoors
Vacuum beetles from floors, walls, or windowsills, or gently sweep them into a dustpan. Empty the canister or bag soon afterward so beetles do not escape or leave a lingering odor. Avoid crushing them: their defensive secretion can leave yellow-orange stains on fabric, carpet, and walls.
For a vacuum-hose capture method, the University of Minnesota Extension’s guidance, reviewed in 2026, describes placing a knee-high nylon stocking inside the hose to catch beetles before they reach the vacuum. Secure it so it cannot be drawn into the machine, and dispose of the collected beetles promptly.

Will spraying the house solve the problem?
Do not rely on a single spray or product to fix an established indoor problem. Virginia Tech says perimeter sprays, if used, should be applied before beetles begin clustering. Product labels, permitted uses, and local recommendations vary, so follow the current label and local extension guidance. Sealing entry points and repairing screens address the routes beetles use; vacuuming is for cleanup after they are inside.
