The eight options below are not mutually exclusive categories: some describe equipment layout, some describe the area served, and others describe how heat is moved.
How the types differ
“Central” describes a system serving multiple rooms through ducts or a packaged arrangement. “Ductless” describes how cooling reaches indoor spaces. A heat pump describes reversible heat transfer, while an evaporative cooler uses water evaporation rather than a conventional refrigeration cycle. That is why a ductless mini-split can also be a heat pump, and why the categories overlap in U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) classifications.
Eight air-conditioning options
1. Central split air conditioner
A central split system cools multiple rooms through ducts and registers, with equipment divided between indoor and outdoor components. It is worth comparing when the home already has suitably sized, well-sealed ductwork. If ducts must be added or distribution replaced, that changes the scope of the project. DOE recommends checking duct connections and sealing leaks: DOE guidance on central air conditioning.
2. Packaged central air conditioner
A packaged system places the evaporator, condenser, and compressor together in one unit; it can serve a home through ductwork. The distinction from a split system is equipment arrangement, not a guaranteed difference in efficiency or price. Have the proposed system assessed for the home and installation rather than assuming the package format is automatically a better fit. DOE explains central-system categories.

3. Ductless mini-split
A mini-split connects one or more indoor units to outdoor equipment without conventional ducts. Separate indoor units can serve distinct zones, and many mini-splits can both cool and heat. Avoiding ducts can also avoid duct energy losses, making this an option to compare where ducts are absent or room-by-room control matters. System cost and suitability depend on the home and installation. DOE notes that some mini- and multi-split systems are also classified as central air conditioners or heat pumps: central-system definitions and heat-pump information.
4. Window air conditioner
A window air conditioner cools a room and is mounted in a window; DOE’s consumer definition also includes through-wall units. It is a straightforward category to consider for a room rather than whole-home cooling. Check that the unit fits the opening and is installed securely: improper installation can increase air leakage. A DOE infographic published in 2016 estimated that poor room-unit installation could add up to 10% air leakage; that is a source-era illustration, not a measurement for every home or installation. The intuitive LED display and remote control (batteries included) allow easy setting of time, temperature, and mode from across the room. The removable and reusable air filter protects your family and living space from dust and pet hairs.
- EASY INSTALLATION - Install easily in your home or apartment's existing window frame . All mounting accessories are included. A screwdriver is required (but not included) for installation. For some window frames, pilot holes are recommended before installing screws. Installation instructions are simple and setting it up is a breeze.
- WORLDWIDE LEADER - Midea is the air treatment brand with a motto to help make customers feel at home with each of their products. As a testament to our dedication to quality and our customers, we offer one-year parts and labor warranty on this product.
- ENERGY EFFICIENT - The EasyCool window air conditioner helps save you money throughout the year. There are also multiple custom settings to help you be even more energy-efficient like Eco mode and an EasyTimer feature to program a schedule that fits your needs.
5. Portable air conditioner
A portable air conditioner is another room-cooling option, with a different form and installation arrangement from a window unit. Compare one when a window unit is impractical, but do not assume it is more efficient or effective: performance depends on the specific model and conditions. Review the manufacturer’s installation requirements and the unit’s cooling capacity for the intended room. DOE portable air-conditioner guidance.
6. Air-source heat pump
An air-source heat pump moves heat from indoors to outdoors during cooling. It can reverse direction to heat the home, and it is available in ducted and ductless configurations. Include it in a cooling comparison if you are considering one system for both heating and cooling. DOE heat-pump guidance.

7. Geothermal (ground-source) heat pump
A geothermal heat pump exchanges heat with the ground rather than relying on outdoor air. DOE says its initial installation may cost several times as much as an air-source system of comparable capacity. Whether possible operating savings repay that added cost depends on local energy prices, incentives, site conditions, and the project itself; it is not a universal payback promise. DOE geothermal heat-pump information.
8. Evaporative cooler
Also called a swamp cooler, an evaporative cooler cools outdoor air as water evaporates and adds moisture to the air. It is better suited to arid climates than humid ones and requires more frequent maintenance, according to DOE. It is not a like-for-like substitute for conventional air conditioning in humid conditions: DOE says ventilation is not an effective cooling strategy in hot, humid weather. Compare the options against your home
| Option | Coverage and configuration | Heating and climate fit | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central split AC | Multiple rooms through ducts | Cooling; heating depends on system configuration | Existing duct condition and scope of any duct work |
| Packaged central AC | Central cooling; major components in one unit, typically connected to ducts | Cooling; heating depends on system configuration | Equipment arrangement alone does not establish efficiency or price |
| Ductless mini-split | One or more indoor zones, without conventional ducts | Can cool and heat; useful to compare when zoning or no ducts matter | Indoor-unit layout and installation costs vary by home |
| Window AC | One room; window- or through-wall-mounted | Room cooling | Opening fit, secure installation, room capacity |
| Portable AC | One room; portable category | Room cooling | Compare model-level capacity and installation needs |
| Air-source heat pump | Ducted or ductless; can serve the home or zones depending on design | Cooling and heating | Consider both seasons and system configuration |
| Geothermal heat pump | Ground-source system; whole-home scope depends on design | Can provide heating and cooling | Site feasibility and higher initial installation cost |
| Evaporative cooler | Introduces cooled, moisture-bearing air | Best suited to dry climates | Humidity, ventilation, and maintenance needs |
The DOE’s 2016 infographic included broad comparisons of installation cost and energy use for certain systems, as well as generalized lifespan ranges. Those source-era illustrations are not current estimates, guarantees, or a substitute for comparing specific equipment and quotes, so they are not used here to rank today’s choices.

What to check before choosing
- Area to cool: Decide whether you need one room, selected zones, or multiple rooms throughout the home.
- Ductwork and building constraints: Check whether existing ducts are usable and sealed, or whether new ducts or wall/window openings would affect the project.
- Climate and humidity: Evaporative cooling suits dry conditions; added moisture makes it a poor match for humid climates.
- Heating needs: If the same equipment should heat as well as cool, compare heat pumps and confirm the proposed configuration.
- Model and installation details: Compare appropriate capacity, efficiency ratings, noise, maintenance, and installation requirements at the model level. Type names alone do not establish these values.
- Total cost: Evaluate the installed project and expected operating costs for your home; current prices and head-to-head model performance are not established by the system categories themselves.
