Choose between PetSafe and eXtreme Dog Fence by matching the exact system to your yard’s shape, route, and your dog—not by assuming one brand is better overall. PetSafe documents both a custom-shaped buried-wire system and a circular wireless option; eXtreme is another wired option, with manufacturer claims about its wire that should not be treated as independent performance evidence.
Before buying, check the specific kit’s included wire, coverage, collar eligibility, accessories, battery, and warranty terms. A buried-wire system also requires a planned route and installation that follows its manual; electronic containment is not a guaranteed physical barrier.

Which system fits your yard?
When a wired system makes sense
A buried wire can follow a planned custom route and may suit yards with irregular boundaries or specific keep-out areas. Before choosing either brand, sketch the boundary and exclusion zones, measure the complete route, and note gates, obstacles, existing metal fencing, and the transmitter’s power location. Check the exact manual for wire spacing, crossings, splices, depth, and surge protection; requirements vary by system.
#1 Best Overall
- Peace Of Mind: Our in-ground fence gives your dog more room than traditional in-ground fences making him feel like the correction area is infinite and encouraging him to stay in the yard
- Secure A 1/3 Acre Yard: Create a safe 1/3-acre play area for your best friend; purchase additional wire to fence in up to a 5.5-acre yard
- Safe Pet Correction: The receiver collar has a tone-only mode and 5 levels of safe, static correction that you can adjust based on how your dog responds during training
- Diy Installation: This easy, do-it-yourself weekend project lets you create a fence that fits your yard
- Static-Free Reentry: Allows your dog to return home without being corrected if he passes the boundary
PetSafe’s cited In-Ground Fence listing identifies model PIG00-13661 and includes 500 feet of 20-gauge wire, connectors, gel-filled capsules, flags, a surge protector, and a test-light tool. Verify the current product page and manual because included parts and availability may change. The listing says the system can expand up to 25 acres with additional wire and flags. PetSafe’s separate Basic system page gives different, model-specific coverage figures; do not assume one model’s limits apply to another.
When a wireless PetSafe system may fit
The cited PetSafe Wireless Pet Containment System makes a circular boundary, rather than tracing a custom property line. PetSafe describes an adjustable 10-to-180-foot diameter and coverage up to one-half acre, with setup requiring an outlet. The manufacturer says the circle cannot be changed into a square or rectangle. Check the exact unit’s current instructions and suitability for your yard before buying.
Attaching wire to an existing fence
eXtreme’s FAQ says its boundary wire may be zip-tied to or woven through an existing fence. It also warns that non-galvanized metal can skew the signal, so do not assume every fence material will work as intended. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for your fence and planned route before installation.

Measure the route and compare the exact kits
- Sketch the boundary and any areas the dog should not enter, such as gardens or driveways.
- Measure the complete wire route, including the path to the transmitter, and compare it with the exact kit’s included wire and expansion guidance.
- Identify existing fences, metal, obstacles, gates, and places where the route must cross hardscape.
- Check the exact system’s manual for installation requirements and the product page for included accessories, collar eligibility, battery type, and current warranty.
- Before digging, check local utility-locate requirements and identify private lines that may not be covered by public locators.
Do not rely on acreage alone to estimate wire needs: the route and yard geometry determine how much wire is required. The research reviewed does not establish a universal wire-depth or spacing specification, so follow the selected product’s instructions rather than a generic rule.
Dog fit, batteries, and accessories
Verify age and weight eligibility for the exact PetSafe model. PetSafe’s cited In-Ground Fence page specifies dogs over 8 pounds, while its Basic system support page gives an age guideline of 6 months and older. Those are product-specific details, not universal rules for every kit.
Do not assume collars, batteries, or accessories are interchangeable across systems. eXtreme says its batteries are proprietary and lists 6-volt batteries for active collars and 7.5-volt batteries for hyper/stubborn collars. Confirm the collar type and voltage before buying a replacement. PetSafe lists additional wire and flags for its cited In-Ground Fence; check compatibility with the exact model.
Rank #3
- Peace Of Mind: Our in-ground fence gives your dog more room than traditional in-ground fences making him feel like the correction area is infinite and encouraging him to stay in the yard
- Choose Your Wire: In-ground wire is sold separately so that you can purchase the gauge best for your yard; PetSafe offers Standard (20 Gauge) and Heavy Duty (16 Gauge) in varying lengths
Training and safety limits
Training, correct installation, and routine checks matter. PetSafe’s containment manual states: “Since the tolerance level to static correction varies from pet to pet, Radio Systems Corporation CANNOT guarantee that the system will, in all cases, keep a pet within the established boundary.” This is a manufacturer warning, not an independent evaluation.
An electronic containment system is not a physical fence. It does not keep other animals or people out, and it cannot guarantee a dog will remain within the boundary. Follow the chosen system’s manual and seek qualified training or veterinary guidance when appropriate. Consider the actual hazards around your property before relying on electronic containment.
