1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor frequent bulky bedding, towels, or family laundry, start by comparing washers around 4.5 cubic feet or larger—but treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee that every large item will fit. Verify the exact model’s capacity and dimensions, check its performance and efficiency, and make sure the matching dryer can tumble the load.
What counts as a large-capacity washer?
There is no single industry standard for washer-size labels. Whirlpool describes 4.5 cubic feet and above as generally large capacity; its rough estimate for that range is 11–21 full-sized bath towels, depending on the towels and washer model. That estimate is useful for orientation, not a precise load limit. See Whirlpool’s large-capacity washer guide.
Capacity is only one measure of fit. Bulky items need room to move in the drum, and overfilling can interfere with cleaning or damage the appliance. Follow the washer manual and the item’s care label rather than forcing in one more towel or blanket.
Will a large washer fit a king comforter?
A washer at or above 4.5 cubic feet will typically handle a king-size duvet or comforter, according to Whirlpool, but the item’s construction and the washer’s design matter. Consumer Reports says its tests found that washers claiming more than 4.5 cubic feet can fit a king-size comforter. Neither statement guarantees that every comforter will fit every washer. Check the care label and the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact model and item.

- Tough Action for Tough Stains: Our top load clothes washer features a Triple Action Impeller to tackle your toughest loads in three powerful ways: Spraying Action to attack dirt from every angle with a concentrated detergent mix, Wash Basket Action to move the wash basket back and forth, and Impeller Action to move clothes in a circular pattern
- More Laundry, Less Time: Our high-efficiency top load washer features Express Wash to clean small loads in just 30 minutes (based on a 3-lb load, default cycle setting), and Accela Wash to clean full-size loads up to 51% faster (compared to a standard 8-lb load, normal cycle, warm wash temp, extra heavy soil setting) - so you spend less time doing laundry
- Wash Your Way: Features 10 wash cycles to custom wash your loads including Heavy Duty, Whites, Towels, Delicates, and Express Cycles. Select from 4 temperature options and rinse with Extra Rinse to help protect sensitive skin. Soft Close lid has tempered glass and won’t slam shut
- Easy to Operate: Use the intuitive light-touch controls to select the load and cycle options that match the fabric types in each load. Plus, the convenient LED lights provide time remaining and cycle status information
- Reduce and Save: Energy savings includes Cold Clean which cleans gently & completely while using up to 90% less energy (when compared to the normal cycle, default settings, 8-lb load)
Consider how the comforter will move once wet, not just whether it can be pushed through the door. If it fills the drum tightly, use a larger-capacity machine or a suitable laundromat rather than compromising the wash.
Which washer models are worth comparing?
Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide lists the following front-load washers among its higher-scoring models. The scores are Consumer Reports’ overall ratings, not independent tests conducted for this article. The guide excerpt does not state these models’ capacities, so confirm the current capacity and bulky-item guidance with the manufacturer before treating any as a large-load choice.

The 2026 guide also compares predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, washing performance, energy and water efficiency, gentleness, noise, vibration, cycle time, dimensions, and stackability. Use those category results alongside capacity: a top overall score by itself does not establish that a model suits your largest items. The guide’s prices can change, so check current retailer listings and manufacturer specifications.
Front-load or top-load for frequent bulky laundry?
Choose by loading preference, available space, and the trade-offs that matter in your household; capacity alone does not determine which style will clean better for you. ENERGY STAR estimates certified front-load washers use about 50% less energy and water than top-load agitator washers and about 25% less than top-load impeller washers. These are broad category comparisons, not predictions for a particular pair of models. Compare the exact machines’ cleaning, gentleness, cycle time, noise, and vibration results where available.

ENERGY STAR also recommends checking the yellow EnergyGuide label. Compare a higher Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) and a lower Integrated Water Factor (IWF): IMEF accounts for washer-cycle and standby energy, water-heating energy, and dryer energy, while IWF measures gallons used per cubic foot of capacity. Its guidance says full-sized ENERGY STAR-certified washers use 14 gallons per load versus 20 gallons for a standard machine; the figures are program guidance, not a model-specific guarantee. - Measure width, height, and depth, including the room needed for hoses, ventilation, doors, and the manufacturer’s required clearances.
- Measure the delivery route—doorways, halls, stairs, and turns—not just the final alcove.
- Check door swing and loading access, especially where cabinets or a nearby dryer could block the opening.
- If stacking, verify that the washer and dryer are approved for stacking together and that the required kit and clearances fit.
Match the dryer to the washer load
A dryer is commonly larger in capacity than its paired washer because wet clothes need room to expand and tumble. Check the exact dryer’s capacity and the manufacturer’s pairing guidance; a washer’s large drum does not ensure that the same load will dry effectively in a smaller dryer.
Make large-capacity laundry more efficient
ENERGY STAR recommends running full loads when practical, washing in cold water unless treating oily stains, and following the machine maker’s maintenance instructions. For front-loaders, it advises leaving the door ajar for an hour or two after use so moisture can evaporate; keep children from climbing inside. Follow the selected washer’s manual if its care instructions differ.
