Winterize Your Sprinkler System Before Freezing Weather Arrives

Shut off irrigation water before freezing weather arrives, then drain or arrange a system-appropriate winterization. Climate, buried lines and backflow devices determine whether a blowout is needed.

Before freezing weather reaches your irrigation system, shut off its water supply and winterize it using the method suited to your system and local climate. Drain exposed components and lines designed to drain; where prolonged freezes can reach buried pipes, a properly performed compressed-air blowout may be needed. If you cannot identify the backflow device, drainage layout or safe blowout limits, contact an irrigation professional.

Why freezing weather can crack an irrigation system

Water expands by about one-eleventh as it freezes, according to Colorado State University Extension’s fact sheet, published in October 2014 and reviewed in August 2025. The expansion can burst pipes, fittings, valves, sprinkler heads and pumps. Water left in exposed components or trapped in a line can therefore cause damage even when the controller is turned off.

Winterization is not one-size-fits-all. Local freeze patterns, the depth of buried lines, system design and the backflow device all affect what needs to be drained and whether a blowout is appropriate.

Choose a winterization method for your climate and system

Method When it may fit Important limitation
Shut off, drain and insulate exposed components Light or mild freezes and systems designed to drain. Texas A&M AgriLife describes this approach for much of Texas. Gravity drainage may leave water in low spots, and exposed-pipe insulation does not remove water from buried lines or internal components.
Compressed-air blowout Regions with prolonged freezing where the ground freezes down to buried pipelines; Texas A&M notes it is most commonly used in northern parts of Texas. Airflow and pressure must suit the system. Excessive or improperly applied air can damage equipment; Colorado State University Extension says not to blow air through PVB or RP backflow devices.
Professional winterization When the system layout, pressure limits, zone flow or backflow-device type is uncertain. Confirm the provider is qualified to work with your equipment and local conditions.

There is no single national date or temperature threshold for winterizing. Colorado guidance notes that fall temperatures can fluctuate, while regional differences mean the right method depends on local freeze depth and system design.

What to do before temperatures drop

  1. Locate the irrigation shutoff. Turn off the irrigation water supply before freezing weather reaches vulnerable components. If you cannot identify the correct shutoff, ask a qualified professional rather than guessing.
  2. Identify exposed equipment and the backflow preventer. Note exposed pipe, pumps and the backflow assembly. If you cannot identify the backflow device or its drainage procedure, do not attempt a blowout through it.
  3. Shut down the controller and drain exposed components. Texas A&M AgriLife’s guidance for light-to-mild freezes in much of Texas includes controller shutdown, water shutoff, exposed PVC insulation and drainage of exposed components. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions for your particular system.
  4. Account for low points and trapped water. A gravity drain may not empty every line if pipes have shifted or developed low spots. Drain pumps and exposed pipelines as applicable; Oregon State University Extension recommends end-of-season inspection and draining or blowing out pipelines.
  5. Arrange a blowout only if the system and climate call for it. In regions where prolonged freezing can reach buried lines, a qualified blowout may be needed. Have the operator use equipment and regulated pressure appropriate to your pipes, zones and devices.

Important: do not blow compressed air through a PVB or RP device

Colorado State University Extension specifically cautions against blowing compressed air through pressure vacuum breaker (PVB) or reduced pressure (RP) backflow devices. Its fact sheet describes different draining procedures for these devices. Use the procedure for the exact model, or have an irrigation professional handle it; a generic blowout approach can damage the assembly.

Why DIY blowout can be risky

Compressed-air blowout requires both suitable airflow and pressure control. Colorado State University Extension’s 2014 fact sheet, reviewed in August 2025, gives maximums of 80 psi for rigid PVC and 50 psi for polyethylene pipe. Those are ceilings in that source’s guidance, not universal settings or a recommendation to use those pressures on every system.

The same fact sheet estimates airflow by dividing a zone’s gallons per minute (GPM) by 7.5 to estimate cubic feet per minute (CFM); its example converts a 20-GPM zone to 2.66 CFM. Actual compressor selection also depends on pressure and system specifications. Minnesota Turfgrass Science advises against homeowners blowing out their own systems and recommends a certified irrigation professional; Oklahoma State University Extension likewise warns that pressure misuse can damage equipment and recommends professional help.

If you do not know the pipe material, zone flow, system pressure limits or correct procedure for the backflow device, do not improvise with a compressor. Above-ground insulation can help protect exposed parts, but it cannot drain water from buried lines or internal components.

When to call an irrigation professional

  • You cannot locate the irrigation shutoff or identify the backflow device.
  • You do not know whether the system is designed for gravity drainage or requires a blowout in your local climate.
  • You are unsure how to drain a pump, exposed line, low point or backflow assembly.
  • You cannot confirm safe pressure and airflow for the pipe material and zones.

Professional winterization is the safer choice when any of these details are unclear. Colorado and Minnesota guidance both point homeowners toward professional help when a blowout is needed or the system-specific procedure is uncertain.
