Baking soda and vinegar or lemon juice have limited, task-specific uses in household-cleaning guidance, while a simmer pot adds scent rather than removing an odor. The available evidence supports those distinctions, but does not establish a personal test of three tricks or prove that any one method works for every odor.
Start with the odor source
Identify what smells and address it directly: remove the waste, clean the affected area with a product suitable for that surface, or deal with the underlying source if the odor returns. The US Environmental Protection Agency says source control is usually the most effective way to improve indoor air quality. EPA’s indoor-air-quality guidance explains this approach.
Ventilation can help reduce indoor pollutant concentrations, but it does not replace cleaning or fixing the source. When outdoor conditions permit, open windows or doors, or use exhaust fans to bring in outdoor air. The EPA’s home guidance describes these options.
Three household methods, with realistic expectations
1. Baking soda for contained odor sources
Baking soda is a reasonable low-cost option to try for odors in places such as a refrigerator or garbage area. Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality guidance suggests it for those uses, and an EPA-hosted healthy-home guide includes it among cleaning alternatives. These references support a limited use, not a guarantee that baking soda will solve persistent or widespread odors.

Remove spoiled food or waste and clean the affected area as appropriate; placing baking soda nearby should not stand in for that step.
2. Vinegar or lemon juice for selected cleaning tasks
Vinegar and lemon juice appear in the EPA-hosted guide’s household cleaning alternatives. That does not mean either is suitable for every material or every kind of mess. Check the surface manufacturer’s care instructions and the cleaning method before applying anything, and try an inconspicuous area if compatibility is uncertain.

Homemade mixtures should not be treated as disinfectants or universal replacements for formulated products. The EPA’s archived Safer Choice FAQ cautions that homemade cleaners typically do not perform as well as formulated commercial products.
3. A citrus-and-spice simmer pot for added fragrance
Gently simmering citrus, cloves, or cinnamon can add a noticeable scent to a room; Mississippi’s green-cleaning guidance describes this kind of simmer pot. It perfumes the space rather than showing that an odor source has been removed. Use it only while attended and follow ordinary stovetop safety.

Use cleaning products safely—and don’t confuse fragrance with cleaner air
The US Environmental Protection Agency warns: “Never mix cleaning products together or add bleach to other chemicals.” Follow product labels, check that a product is compatible with the surface, and ventilate during use. EPA guidance on biological contaminants and indoor air quality includes the mixing warning; its home air-quality advice also recommends following labels and increasing ventilation.
Fragranced products are not an air-quality remedy. The EPA notes that cleaning products, air fresheners, and fragrances can contribute to indoor particulate matter and other pollutants; pine- or citrus-scented products can react with ozone indoors to form particles and formaldehyde. See EPA’s overview of indoor particulate-matter sources. If an odor persists, prioritize locating and addressing its source rather than covering it with a stronger scent.
