A cordless circular saw usually binds because the cut closes around the blade, the workpiece shifts or sags, or the blade is twisted out of line. When the blade catches, the saw can stop abruptly and kick up or back toward you. Support the material so the kerf stays open, use a sharp blade suited to the cut, and guide the saw without forcing it. If it binds, release the trigger and hold the saw still until the blade stops completely.
Why a circular saw binds—and how binding can cause kickback
The kerf is the slot the blade makes. If the workpiece sags, twists, or moves as the cut progresses, the two sides of that slot can pinch the blade. A blade that is forced or turned off its cut line can also catch. Makita’s manual for the 5402NA describes kickback as a sudden reaction to a pinched, bound, or misaligned blade that can lift the saw out of the workpiece toward the operator. The exact instructions for your saw may differ, so consult its manual.
Binding is not simply a weak-battery or motor problem. A stall can occur when the blade is trapped, and that sudden catch can make the saw move unpredictably. A dull, damaged, or unsuitable blade, poor stock, or incorrect setup can contribute to the conditions that lead to binding.
Prevent binding by keeping the cut supported and the saw aligned
Support the work so the kerf stays open
Arrange supports before cutting so the material cannot sag, twist, or shift into the blade. OSHA’s guidance for handheld circular saws calls for supporting the pieces, including cut and uncut ends, scrap, and finished material. For a large panel, Makita’s 5402NA manual advises support on both sides near the cut and near the panel edge. Plan where the offcut will fall; it should not drop or rotate in a way that closes the kerf.

Guide the base plate along the cut
Keep the saw’s base plate aligned with the intended cut and advance at a controlled pace. Do not twist the saw to steer it or force it through resistance. If the saw starts to bind or the cut stops progressing normally, stop rather than pushing harder.
Choose and maintain the right blade
Use a blade intended for the material and cut, and make sure it fits the saw’s specifications for diameter, arbor, and maximum speed. Inspect it for damage and replace a cracked blade; a replacement must match both the saw manual and the task. OSHA identifies incorrect blade selection, incorrect blade height, and poor blade maintenance as potential kickback contributors, and recommends a proper, maintained, sharp blade. A sharp blade cannot compensate for a closing kerf or poor support.

Inspect the stock and take extra care when ripping
OSHA identifies knots, foreign objects, and poor-quality lumber as contributors to kickback hazards. Inspect the material and avoid questionable sections where practical. OSHA also says kickback is more likely during ripping—a cut along the grain—than during crosscutting. That is a relative risk, not a guarantee that a crosscut cannot kick back. Keep the stock supported and the saw aligned for either type of cut.
What to do if the saw binds mid-cut
- Release the trigger.
- Hold the saw still in the kerf until the blade has come to a complete stop. Do not pull a running saw backward or try to remove it while the blade is moving.
- Once the blade stops, identify and correct the cause. Check the workpiece support and whether the kerf has closed, then inspect blade condition and alignment. Keep your hands away from the blade; do not try to clear a bind while it is moving.
- Before restarting in the cut, follow the instructions for your saw. Makita’s 5402NA guidance and the indexed DEWALT DCS520B manual instructions say to center the blade in the kerf and ensure the teeth are not engaged in the material before restarting.
Remove the battery before inspection or adjustment if your tool’s manual instructs you to do so. A cordless saw can still be hazardous while its blade is coasting.

Do brake features eliminate kickback risk?
No. DEWALT describes a kickback brake on its DCS525 20V XR 6-1/2-inch track saw as shutting off when the tool detects a pinch, stall, or bind. That is a manufacturer description of this particular model, not a guarantee against every kickback or a feature every saw needs. It also does not replace sound support, blade choice, and operating technique. If you are considering a guided track saw for panel cuts, check that its battery platform, cut depth, track requirements, current availability, and price suit your work.
