How to Find the Best Place for a Subwoofer in Your Room

Find a subwoofer position that sounds balanced in your room with practical placement tests, listening-seat adjustments and measurement tips.

There is no universally best subwoofer location: the room, the subwoofer and the listening seat all shape the bass you hear. Start by comparing a spot slightly off-centre along the front wall with a front corner. If neither sounds balanced, use a subwoofer crawl or measure the response, and move the seat too if practical.

Why subwoofer placement changes the sound

Low-frequency sound interacts strongly with a room’s walls and dimensions. Room resonances and reflections create areas where bass is reinforced and areas where it is reduced. Moving the subwoofer or listener can therefore change the bass substantially—even within the same room. A position that sounds powerful at one seat may sound uneven or weak at another.

A wall or corner can increase bass output because boundaries limit how sound radiates. That extra output does not guarantee a smooth response: the room’s geometry still determines where peaks and cancellations occur. Compare locations for balanced bass rather than choosing the loudest one.

Which locations should you try first?

Front wall, slightly off-centre

For a single subwoofer, Genelec describes a position along the front wall, slightly away from the room’s middle axis, as a typical starting point. Its guidance is for its own subwoofer context; the result in your room still needs to be tested. Genelec Support explains its placement and measurement guidance.

Front corner

SVS recommends trying a corner first, then comparing other positions if the result is not right. A corner may provide more output, but it can also excite room resonances unevenly. Treat it as a candidate, not a rule. SVS’s placement guide discusses corner placement and the subwoofer crawl.

How to do a subwoofer crawl

The crawl is a practical way to compare possible subwoofer locations by listening. It is not a substitute for measurement, but it can help identify spots that sound more even.

  1. Choose the main listening seat and note the locations where the subwoofer can fit without obstructing doors, walkways or everyday use.
  2. Temporarily place the subwoofer at or near the listening position.
  3. Play familiar music or film material with a repeating bass line at a comfortable, consistent level.
  4. Move around the candidate subwoofer locations and listen near the height where the subwoofer will sit. Compare how even the bass sounds, rather than selecting the spot where one note is loudest.
  5. Place the subwoofer at the most balanced candidate and listen again from the main seat. If important seats are available, check them as well.

SVS describes this listening-based comparison as a way to find locations where bass is more balanced. The best candidate is room-specific, so repeat the comparison if moving the unit or seat changes the result.

Measure and adjust the seat when possible

If you have suitable measurement tools, compare the response at the primary listening position and at other seats that matter. Genelec recommends trial and measurement rather than relying on a fixed placement formula. Its support guidance also describes an application of acoustic reciprocity: with the subwoofer at the listening position, a microphone can be used at candidate subwoofer positions to compare the room’s response.

  • Max acoustic output 116dB

Small seat movements may shift you away from a bass peak or null. If a location sounds poor, try moving the listening position as well as the subwoofer before settling on a compromise. For several seats, judge the overall consistency, not just the response at one favoured spot.

Integrate the subwoofer with the speakers

Placement is only part of setup. Follow your receiver, processor or speaker system’s bass-management instructions, then check the subwoofer’s integration with the main speakers. Where the system allows phase adjustment, phase alignment around the crossover matters: Genelec notes that poor alignment can reduce level at the crossover.

Crossover figures depend on the equipment. Genelec’s guide states that its active 7000 series uses an 85 Hz crossover, while its SAM subwoofers allow selection from 50 to 100 Hz. Those are product-specific details, not universal settings for other subwoofers or receivers. In a separate Genelec support example, 85 Hz refers to use of its internal bass-management crossover and a smooth extension between the monitor’s low-frequency cutoff and the subwoofer’s cutoff. Genelec’s monitor-placement guide explains its system-specific advice.

When are a second subwoofer or room treatments worth considering?

Two subwoofers for several seats

Two subwoofers in separated locations can help make bass more consistent across multiple listening positions, but adding a second unit does not automatically remove every peak or null. Placement and room response still matter; compare the result at the seats you actually use. Genelec identifies two or four subwoofers as one option for making room-mode excitation more even in its guidance.

Note: For ②, main speaker requires LINE IN (Bluetooth/USB/optical/non-wired not supported).

Equalization and bass traps

SVS says equalization can often reduce modal peaks, while nulls are better avoided through placement because EQ is not a reliable way to fill a cancellation. Bass traps may reduce reflected bass energy and modal decay, though their effectiveness depends on the room and treatment. These are options to evaluate after comparing placement, not guaranteed fixes for every room.

A practical way to choose

  • For one main seat: compare a slightly off-centre front-wall position and a corner, then use the crawl or measurement to refine the choice.
  • For several seats: assess bass at each important position and consider testing two separated subwoofers if one unit cannot provide acceptable consistency.
  • When space is limited: compare only locations that work with the room’s layout, and see whether a small seat adjustment improves the result.
  • When the bass is loud but uneven: do not assume more output is the answer; test a different location, consider measurement and avoid trying to boost a deep null with EQ.
  • When the crossover sounds weak: check the system’s bass-management setup and, if available, phase alignment around the crossover.
