A real Christmas tree can stay attractive through the holiday season if it is fresh when you buy it, gets a fresh cut and prompt access to water, and is kept away from heat. There is no guaranteed lifespan in days: check its condition, keep the trunk base submerged, and remove the tree when it becomes dry.

How long does a Christmas tree last indoors?

There is no single number of days that applies to every indoor cut tree. Its display life depends on freshness at purchase, how soon the cut end reaches water, whether that end stays submerged, and the heat around it. A well-cared-for tree may remain attractive through the holiday season, but dryness—not a calendar date—is the key reason to take it down.

8 tips to keep a real Christmas tree looking good

1. Choose a fresh tree

Gently pull a branch. It should feel supple and retain most of its green needles. A few brown needles inside the tree can be normal. At the lot, look for trees displayed in shade; in warmer climates, trees standing in water are a good sign of care. These freshness cues are described in the Real Christmas Tree Board’s 2025 buyer guide.

2. Make a fresh cut at the trunk base

Before placing the tree in its stand, cut roughly 1–2 inches from the base of the trunk. If the tree has been out of water and cannot be placed in water promptly after arriving home, make another fresh cut before installation. A fresh cut helps the tree take up water.

3. Put it in water promptly

Get the cut end into water as soon as possible after bringing the tree home. University of Minnesota Extension explains that sap can seal a cut surface and limit water absorption. Its 2025 guidance on fresh-cut greens recommends daily water checks.

4. Use plain tap water

Water additives are unnecessary. The Real Christmas Tree Board advises against sugar, aspirin, corn syrup, bleach, and other additives. Sugar can promote mold that clogs water-conducting tissue, according to University of Minnesota Extension.

5. Check the stand every day

Keep the cut end submerged. Do not assume the tree is watered just because there is water somewhere in the stand; if the trunk base is exposed, refill it. Trees take up the most water during the first couple of weeks, though the amount varies from tree to tree.

6. Pick a stand with enough reservoir capacity

The Real Christmas Tree Board offers a rough planning guide of about one quart of water capacity per inch of trunk diameter. Its care guide also recommends at least 1 to 1.5 gallons of capacity as a starting point, with a larger reservoir if you are unsure. These are capacity guidelines, not a prediction of how much water a particular tree will drink. Choose a stand that fits the trunk and is easy to check and refill.

7. Keep the tree away from heat and use lights safely

Place the tree at least 3 feet from heat sources, including fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, and lights, as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) advises. Heat speeds drying, and dry trees are a fire danger.

  • Use lights listed by a qualified testing laboratory, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and replace worn or broken sets.
  • Turn tree lights off when leaving home or going to bed.

In its 2025 safety tip sheet, NFPA says nearly half of home Christmas tree fires involve electrical problems, while a heat source too close to the tree causes one in four. These figures use the tip sheet’s framing and should not be combined with statistics from a separate NFPA report.

When should you take a Christmas tree down?

Take it down when it becomes dry, even if that is before your usual post-holiday cleanup. Dryness is a safety concern, not just an appearance issue. Keep the tree watered while it is indoors and follow local guidance for disposal or recycling.
