1. Start curls on damp—not dripping wet or fully dry—hair
Dyson’s owner guidance says, “Start with damp hair.” Its Australia support guidance distinguishes the attachments: brushes can be used on wet hair, while barrels work best on damp hair. For barrel styling, rough-dry first, particularly at the roots, then leave the lengths slightly damp. As a practical starting point—not a Dyson specification—aim for lengths that are about 80–90% dry.
If the hair is still very wet, it takes longer to shape and dry; if it is already fully dry, the barrel has less moisture to work with. Adjust the starting dampness to your hair and the attachment. Dyson’s owner guidance and Dyson Australia’s Airwrap support explain the distinction.
2. Use hold product and a suitably small barrel for longer-lasting curls
Dyson recommends applying a pre-styling product with hold and using the smallest barrel suitable for the look. Treat that as a repeatable starting setup, not a guarantee: hair texture, length, section size, and the product all affect how a curl forms and lasts. Work with manageable sections and adjust the barrel and product if the result is too loose or too tightly defined.

3. Dry the curl, then use the cold shot to set it
For barrel curls, Dyson recommends high heat and high airflow. Keep the section on the barrel until it is completely dry, then press the cold shot for 5–10 seconds. Turn the machine off and pull the hair downward to release it. Dyson’s technique guidance gives that cold-shot range.
A separate practical guide published in 2025 recommends holding until the curl feels dry to the touch and using a 10–15 second cold shot. That is a different recommendation, not the same range as Dyson’s. Use the manufacturer’s 5–10 seconds as the baseline, and let the curl’s dryness—not simply the timer—guide when to release it. The dated practical guide provides its alternative timing.

4. Choose the attachment for the finish you want
There is no single best Airwrap attachment for every head of hair. Dyson’s attachment guidance links the tool to the intended finish:

| Wide-tooth comb | Volume and texture for curly or coily hair |

5. Adjust your technique to your hair texture
Hair type changes how much control and care a style needs. Dyson’s guidance for fine, curly, and coily hair emphasizes working on damp hair, controlling brush use, sectioning deliberately, and avoiding tangles. Begin with manageable sections, keep the brush moving, and do not pull through a tangle. Choose the attachment according to both texture and the finish you want; “best” depends on those two things, not on a universal ranking.

Filter maintenance can affect airflow and styling performance. Dyson recommends cleaning the filter about monthly, or when the white LED flashes continuously. Brush the mesh without using chemicals or water, and clean the filter cage as directed in the manufacturer’s instructions. Hair products, dust, and lint can restrict airflow, so a loss of performance may be a maintenance issue rather than a styling-technique problem. Follow Dyson’s filter-care instructions.

7. Cool the tool before changing attachments—and check voltage abroad
Use the cool-touch tip or edge when handling an attachment, and let the machine cool before swapping attachments. If travelling internationally, check the manual before plugging it in: Dyson says the styler is engineered for the voltage of the country where it was purchased. Do not assume it will operate safely or correctly at another country’s voltage. See Dyson’s safety and use guidance.
