A 12-inch disc sander is a benchtop machine that sands and shapes material against a rotating 12-inch abrasive disc. Before choosing one, check the machine’s approved materials, electrical supply, table and guidance features, dust connection, and compatible abrasive—not just the disc diameter. These specifications differ by model and market.
What is a 12-inch disc sander used for?
These machines are used to sand and shape workpieces; model listings and manuals may also describe beveling, deburring, grinding, chamfering, linishing, or burr removal. Those tasks and suitable materials depend on the specific machine. For example, Palmgren lists wood, plastic, and metal; SIP lists woods, plastics, and non-ferrous metals; the WEN 65812 manual specifies natural solid woods and composite materials. Check the manual for the exact model before using it on a particular material.
What to compare when choosing one
Material and intended work
Start with the manufacturer’s stated use. A product listing that names metal or plastics does not establish that every 12-inch disc sander is suitable for those materials. Also consider the workpiece size and whether the table and guidance system support the shaping or beveling you intend to do.
Motor, voltage and speed
Match the machine’s voltage to your local supply and check its motor rating and circuit requirements. Published specifications are model and market details, not directly comparable performance tests.

| BAUER 58862 / 21107E-B | 1-1/4 HP; 120 V; 8 A | Maximum 1725 RPM | Harbor Freight product listing |
| SIP 01933 | 800 W (1 hp) S1; 230 V (13 A) | 1490 rpm | SIP product listing |
The manufacturer or seller publishes these figures; they do not establish which machine sands better. Confirm the current specification for the product in your region before purchase.
Table, angle and work guidance
Compare the table dimensions, tilt direction and range, and mitre-gauge capability against your work. Palmgren and BAUER list tables that tilt from 0–45°. SIP lists a 175 by 410 mm table, downward tilt from 0–45°, and a mitre range of 0–60° in both directions. BAUER’s listed table measures 16-3/8 by 6-7/8 inches. A larger tilt range or table alone does not determine suitability; check how the features match the workpiece and the machine’s instructions.

Dust collection and stopping
Dust outlets differ, so check the machine’s port or chute and the hose connection you plan to use. Palmgren lists a 2.06-inch dust chute, BAUER a 2-inch port, and SIP a 45/51 mm extraction outlet. Measure or verify the connection rather than assuming a universal adapter will fit. Palmgren lists a disc brake; SIP lists a manual brake. The cited BAUER listing does not state a brake.
Abrasive attachment and included items
Check the required disc diameter, backing or adhesive, and grit in the machine manual. WEN’s 65812 manual calls for 12-inch PSA (pressure-sensitive adhesive) discs, and Grizzly’s G7297 listing also states compatibility with 12-inch PSA discs. A matching diameter by itself does not confirm compatibility. BAUER’s listing says a 60-grit disc and mitre gauge are included; SIP lists 60 grit. Verify included accessories for the exact listing you are buying.

Using and maintaining a disc sander safely
Follow the manual for your model. The Palmgren and WEN manuals emphasize dust control, supporting the workpiece, keeping hands clear of the moving disc, and disconnecting power before changing an abrasive or carrying out setup and cleaning.
- Use the work table or mitre gauge to support the workpiece; do not hold unsupported stock against the moving disc.
- Keep hands away from the rotating abrasive and maintain the table clearance specified by the manual. Palmgren and WEN specify a maximum 1/16-inch clearance for their respective machines.
- Use appropriate eye protection and dust protection, and connect adequate dust collection where instructed. WEN specifies ANSI Z87.1-approved glasses with side shields, hearing protection, and a dust mask for model 65812.
- Unplug the machine before changing discs, cleaning, setup, or accessory changes, as directed by the relevant manual.
- Follow model-specific warnings. WEN says not to wear gloves while operating its 65812; its stated stop time of about 4.5 minutes applies to that model, not all disc sanders.
Replacing the sanding disc
For WEN 65812, the manual specifies a 12-inch PSA adhesive-backed disc and gives “65812SD” as a replacement-disc search term. It instructs users to remove residue from the plate and press the replacement disc down without leaving loose edges. Grizzly’s G7297 listing also states 12-inch PSA compatibility. For any machine, confirm diameter, backing, and grit against that machine’s manual before fitting a replacement.
