Best Hair Dryer for Home Use: What WIRED’s 2025 Testing Found

WIRED’s 2025 guide favors the Dyson Supersonic Nural overall, but budget, curls, fast drying, and small-space constraints can point to different dryers.

For most people, the best all-around pick in WIRED’s 2025 guide is the Dyson Supersonic Nural, but its price and storage footprint make it a poor fit for some homes. A lighter budget option, a faster-drying model, or one with curl-friendly attachments may suit you better. In a small bathroom, cord reach, noise at the time you use it, grip, and where you’ll store it can matter as much as drying speed.

How to read WIRED’s recommendations

WIRED describes hands-on use rather than a standardized laboratory ranking. Its testers say they cover fine, straight, thick, curly, and color-treated hair in different climates, including humid New York, variable Chicago, and wet Portland. Each dryer is timed on freshly washed hair and evaluated for drying time, heat output, airflow, weight, cord length, travel-voltage compatibility, and how its attachments work, hold up, and style hair. WIRED also reports months-long use to check motor wear, filter maintenance, and performance loss. Read WIRED’s testing methodology.

The methodology does not describe a standardized noise measurement or controlled apartment dimensions and acoustics. WIRED’s comments about noise are useful qualitative observations, not decibel comparisons or proof that a dryer will sound the same in your room.

Which hair dryer should you choose?

Need WIRED’s pick What stands out Tradeoffs to consider
Best overall Dyson Supersonic Nural Scalp Protect mode uses distance sensing to lower temperature; Pause Detect reduces airflow when set down; magnetic attachment recognition. WIRED lists 1.8 lb, 1,600 W, five attachments, an 8.6-foot cord, and a two-year warranty. WIRED flags price, storage footprint, lack of dual voltage, and cord length. Check the current version and bundle.
Lower-cost basic choice Conair InfinitiPRO SmoothWrap Three heat settings, two speeds, removable filter, diffuser and concentrator, and a six-foot cord. WIRED’s author describes it as lightweight and reliable based on personal use. WIRED notes noise and fewer attachments than some alternatives.
Fast drying Dyson Supersonic r WIRED lists 0.7 lb and 1,700 W. Five RFID-enabled attachments can restore saved settings. Its cord is six feet, it lacks scalp-protect mode, and WIRED says it costs more than the Nural.
Frizz-focused styling Shark SpeedStyle Pro Flex Four attachments, folding handle, three heat and three airflow settings; WIRED lists 1.57 lb, 1,750 W, an eight-foot cord, and a two-year warranty. WIRED calls it noisy and notes that no storage bag is included.

These specifications and judgments are reported in WIRED’s 2025 product guide; bundles and product versions can change. Wattage alone does not establish which dryer will feel fastest or gentlest on your hair. Consider heat and airflow control, weight, attachments, and the way you style.

What matters in a small bathroom or apartment?

Measure cord reach before buying

Measure the path from the outlet to the mirror, allowing enough slack to move comfortably. A longer cord may solve reach problems but can be awkward to coil or store. The listed cord lengths above are product specifications, not a guarantee about your bathroom layout.

Plan where the dryer will live

Check whether the dryer fits in a drawer or cabinet with its attachments. A folding handle can help with storage, while a larger body or collection of accessories may take more room. Keep the air inlet unobstructed in storage and during use.

Judge noise in your own routine

Think about when you dry your hair and who might be nearby. WIRED describes the Conair and Shark models as noisy, but its published method does not report decibel testing or controlled room acoustics. If noise is a priority, a qualitative label cannot guarantee how the dryer will sound through your walls.

Check weight and grip

A lower listed weight can matter if you hold a dryer for a long styling session, but balance and grip shape matter too. If possible, handle the exact model before purchasing; a spec sheet does not establish how comfortable it will feel in your hand.

Choose attachments for your hair and style

  • Diffuser: Spreads airflow and can help preserve curl pattern. It is often useful for textured or curly hair.
  • Concentrator: Narrows airflow for focused drying, sectioning, or styling bangs.

Match attachments to your routine, then verify compatibility with the exact dryer model before buying accessories separately. WIRED also identifies the Pattern dryer as an option for curls, though the guide’s product details should be checked for the current model and bundle.

WIRED’s buyer advice presents ionic dryers as a way to reduce frizz and speed evaporation, and ceramic dryers as designed to distribute heat evenly. Treat these as design approaches and shopping heuristics, not guaranteed results or proof that either technology prevents damage. The underlying drying mechanisms are heat and airflow; adjustable settings and a suitable attachment give you more control over how you use them. WIRED’s buyer advice discusses those factors.

Travel use, maintenance, and safe handling

If you plan to travel internationally, verify voltage compatibility on the exact model and consult its manual. The Nural is listed by WIRED as not dual voltage; do not assume that a plug adapter makes a non-dual-voltage appliance compatible with another country’s electrical supply.

Keep the inlet and filter clear as the manufacturer instructs. A historical U.S. National Bureau of Standards technical assessment discusses how restricted airflow and accumulated debris can affect airflow and temperature, as well as drop damage and thermal protection. It is engineering context, not current certification advice or a warning specific to any model. Follow the product manual, and stop using a visibly damaged dryer.
