There is no universal “best soundproof curtain”: blackout curtains control light, acoustic curtains can reduce room echo, and purpose-built sound-blocking curtains are designed to limit sound passing through an opening. These are different jobs. Choose by the noise path and the product’s test evidence—not by a “soundproof” label or blackout lining alone.
What do you want the curtain to do?
First identify the problem. A curtain may help with darkness, reflected sound inside a room, or some sound transmission through a window or other opening. A single product may address more than one, but one feature does not prove another.
- Darkness: Blackout lining is a light-control feature. It does not establish acoustic performance.
- Less echo: Look for sound-absorption data such as NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient). This concerns reflected sound in a space, not the amount of outside noise blocked.
- Less sound through a window: Look for a product tested for sound transmission blocking. Ask what complete assembly was tested, under which method, and how it must be installed.
“Soundproof” is not a uniform performance promise. Suppliers use the term for particular products, but the relevant result depends on what was tested and how the curtain is fitted.
How to compare sound-dampening curtains
Use the same criteria for each candidate, and compare products only when their intended use and test basis are meaningfully alike.

| What to check | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Main goal | Is the product for blackout, echo reduction in the room, or reduced transmission through an opening? |
| Metric and test | Is the figure NRC, STC, or a transmission-loss result? What standard, report, and exact tested assembly does it refer to? |
| Construction | What are the layers, lining or barrier core, face fabric, mass per area, and thickness? Do these match the tested configuration? |
| Fit and sealing | What finished dimensions, overlap, track or rod, and top, side, and bottom coverage are required? |
| Practical fit | Will the hardware support the curtain’s weight? Check sizing, appearance, cleaning, any relevant fire rating, and delivered cost. |
| Evidence | Can the supplier provide an independent or accredited lab report for the exact product and configuration, with test date and location? |
Ask for the full report rather than relying on a number in a listing. A test result for one construction does not automatically apply to a different fabric, lining, size, or installation.
What supplier-published figures can—and cannot—tell you
The following are examples of published product-specific claims, not a ranking or a prediction of results in a home. The cited pages were accessed in 2026; that access date is not an asserted publication date. No controlled independent comparison across ordinary ready-made consumer curtains establishes a universal winner.
Rank #2
- 3 LAYERS - Package includes 2 panels total width 104 inch. 1 layer in front (grey), 1 layer in back(grey) & 1 detachable felt fabric lining in the middle. No Toxic & formaldehyde.
- NOISE REDUCTION - Detachable felt fabric liner is in the middle of the 3 layers, which can absorb annpying noise. Soundproofing effect is influenced by your environment and personal feeling. Different people have different reactions to curtains' noise cancelling effect. Note that this curtains are not 100% soundproof.
- 100% BLACKOUT - Triple weave blackout fabric & 3 layers design make it possible to completely keep out the harsh light and UV ray. Open the time of daytime sleep.
- COST SAVING - Balance room temperature by insulating against summer heat and winter chill. It's both save your energy budget and bring you a dark & quiet surroundings.
- EASY CARE - Easy to install and maintain. Detach the felt liner before machine wash, using only non-chlorine bleach & warm iron when needed. Tumble dry low.
Quiet Curtains: separate lining and fabric results
Quiet Curtains lists STC ratings of 13 and 17 for specialized sound-blocking linings, alongside NRC values ranging from 0.40 to 1.00 across named fabric and construction combinations. The figures describe different properties and configurations; the maximum NRC does not apply to every curtain. See the supplier’s lab results for sound-dampening curtains.
MMT Acoustix: distinct blocking and echo-control products
MMT Acoustix publishes an STC 30 claim and NRC 0.20 for its soundproof curtain, associates the figures with ASTM E90 / C423, and lists a construction of 4500 GSM. The supplier also states “up to 30 dB reduction.” These are supplier claims, not guaranteed room results; request the report for the exact product and assembly before relying on them. Its separate soundproof curtain page distinguishes that product from its acoustic curtain for echo control, which reports NRC up to 0.70 under ASTM C423 for a described 5 mm, double-layer laminated acoustic-foam construction faced with 500 GSM acoustic fabric. The supplier points readers seeking window transmission blocking to its SoundBlanket-core product.

- SOUNDPROOF - Detachable felt fabric liner utilized damping material which performs 2-3 times better in sound-absorbing comparing with ordinary curtains.
- 100% BLACKOUT - Completely blackout isolated from external light and protect your privacy. Ideal usage for napping, early morning, TV watching period during the steaming bright daytime. Also, balance the temperature of the interior spaces by blocking sunlight & draft out and lower your air condition cost achieving energy saving.
- EASY CARE - Good quality and exquisite stitches ensure the drapes withstand years of use. Detach the felt liner before machine wash, using only non-chlorine bleach & warm iron when needed. Tumble dry low.
NOKOMIS: frequency-specific lab result and installation caveat
NOKOMIS reports a maximum result of up to −28.2 dB at 5,000 Hz for its tested product, citing NBN EN ISO 10140-2:2010 and report A-2020LAB-060-I766-44092_E. The page expressly says actual reduction varies with environment, installation, and sealing. The frequency and test context matter; this is not a general promise of 28 dB less noise in a home. Read the test-result page and the Performance PLUS product options.
When a regular blackout curtain is enough
If your main aim is darkness and a softer-feeling room, begin with a well-fitting blackout curtain. Treat any noise benefit as modest and unverified unless that exact curtain has a relevant acoustic test. Blackout and acoustic properties can coexist in a designed product, but blackout fabric alone is not evidence of sound blocking.

- EASY CARE:Machine washable in cold water, use only non-chlorine bleach when needed, tumble dry low and warm iron as needed.
Listings labelled “blackout soundproof curtains” may blur these different claims. Before buying, check whether the seller provides test data for absorption or transmission blocking, and whether the reported construction matches the item on offer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a specialist acoustic curtain may make sense
For echo, choose a product with absorption data such as NRC and enough coverage and pleating for the room. For sound entering through a window, focus on transmission tests and installation details. A curtain may not address noise travelling through the window assembly, wall, ceiling, floor, or other flanking paths; the opening itself may be the weak point.

Custom specialist products are a separate category from ordinary ready-made drapes. Memtech Acoustics describes custom curtains with separate absorption and blocking claims, as well as blackout options, on its Quiet Curtains product page. Verify the exact dimensions, test report, delivered price, and availability for your location before treating any supplier as a candidate.
Installation can determine the result
For a curtain intended to block transmission, coverage and sealing around the opening matter. Confirm the required overlap, mounting arrangement, and top, sides, and bottom treatment with the supplier. Allow for a suitable track or rod, especially for a heavy multi-layer curtain. A lab result for a sealed or specific test assembly should not be assumed to carry over to a curtain with gaps or a different installation.
If the noise remains intrusive, assess whether the window or another path is carrying most of it. A curtain cannot be assumed to solve sound entering through every part of a room’s construction.
A practical buying decision
- State the goal: light control, less room echo, or reduced sound transmission through an opening.
- Shortlist the matching product type: blackout drapery for light; absorption-rated curtains for echo; transmission-tested curtains for opening noise.
- Check the exact evidence: request the report, test method, tested assembly, and construction details for the configuration you would buy.
- Plan the fit: measure the opening, confirm overlap and sealing requirements, and choose hardware that can carry the curtain.
- Compare practical terms: confirm delivered cost, dimensions, availability, cleaning requirements, and any relevant fire rating.
