Dust the wall first, then clean the mark with a soft sponge or cloth that has been dampened and thoroughly wrung out. Start with warm water; if that is not enough, use a little mild, non-abrasive detergent. Test the method in a hidden spot and let it dry before cleaning a larger area. Water-based paint is not automatically washable, so stop if the test changes the wall’s color or sheen.
Wait until the paint is ready for cleaning
Check the paint can or the manufacturer’s product page for care and cure instructions. Fresh paint can be damaged by washing before it has cured. Sherwin-Williams gives different general guidance on two pages: its painted-wall cleaning guidance says to wait at least two weeks before washing, while its property-care guidance says to wait at least 30 days before using cleaning agents on latex-painted walls. If you do not know the exact coating or its instructions, waiting 30 days before detergent cleaning is the more cautious choice of those recommendations.
Clean the wall gently, step by step
- Remove loose dust. Use a clean, dry cloth or a soft brush attachment. Dusting first keeps loose grit from being rubbed across the paint while it is damp.
- Test a hidden spot. Dampen a soft sponge or cloth with water, wring it out thoroughly, and try a small area somewhere inconspicuous. Let it dry and check for a change in color, sheen, or water marks. If water alone is not enough, test a small amount of mild detergent diluted in warm water in another hidden spot.
- Wipe the mark with the gentlest method that works. Work lightly with the well-wrung sponge or cloth. Sherwin-Williams advises starting with the least abrasive option—water and a sponge or cloth, or the mildest detergent—and increasing cleaning strength only if needed. Its wall-cleaning instructions recommend a few drops of mild detergent in warm water for cleaning painted walls.
- Remove detergent residue. Wipe the area lightly with a separate clean, damp cloth, then allow it to dry.
Choose the right amount of moisture and cleaner
The cloth or sponge should be damp, not dripping. Excess water can affect the finish or leave marks, so do not soak the wall or let water run down it. Use only a small amount of mild, non-abrasive detergent if plain water does not remove the mark. Sherwin-Williams’ paint-scrubbability guidance says mild soapy water will generally suffice for waterborne coatings and warns against ammoniated products.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, rough pads, and hard scrubbing, which can wear the paint film or change its appearance.
- Do not keep escalating to stronger cleaners if gentle cleaning changes the color or sheen. Stop and let the area dry.
- Flat or less-scrubbable finishes can be more vulnerable to visible wear than finishes designed for more cleaning. The result also depends on the specific paint, how fully it has cured, its age, and the mark.
When gentle cleaning does not work
Do not assume that a “water-based” label means the wall can withstand repeated washing. If the spot test shows damage, or a gentle pass does not remove the mark, stop rather than using more pressure, more water, or a harsher product. Check the coating’s product-care directions for a suitable next step; when the paint or finish is unknown, there is no reliably safe stronger method to recommend without testing it.
