You can clean a small patch of mold from shower caulk if the bead is intact, but stained or failing caulk may need to be removed and replaced. In either case, control moisture: cleaning or resealing alone will not keep mold away if the joint stays damp.
1. Clean mold from intact, surface-level caulk
For a small area on an intact, cleanable caulk bead, start with detergent and water. Scrub away visible growth, then dry the surface completely. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists detergent and water among its basic mold cleanup steps; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also says household mold can be cleaned with soap or detergent and water.
Removing visible growth matters: killing mold does not necessarily remove it, and dead mold can still cause allergic reactions. If dark discoloration remains embedded in the caulk after cleaning, the bead may stay stained even when its surface has been cleaned. Cleaning cannot restore caulk that has deteriorated, separated, or stopped sealing the joint.
Bleach is not required for this first step, and the EPA does not recommend bleach or other biocides as routine mold-cleanup practice. If you choose a cleaning product, follow its label and ventilate the room. Never mix cleaning products; in particular, do not combine bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.

2. Replace caulk that is failing or remains stained
Do not apply a fresh bead over moldy caulk. Clean the affected joint and let it dry before resealing; applying new caulk over growth or dampness can leave the underlying problem in place. If the bead is failing or remains discolored after cleaning, remove the old caulk, clean the joint, and allow it to dry fully.
Remove the old bead and prepare the joint
- Cut or scrape away the old caulk. A caulk-removal tool can help with this task, but use care not to damage the tub, tile, or other surrounding surfaces.
- Clean the exposed joint and remove visible mold and residue. Dry it thoroughly before applying new sealant; moisture can interfere with adhesion.
- Choose a sealant whose current label identifies it as suitable for your shower surfaces and follow the label’s preparation and application directions.
- Wait the full label-specified cure time before using the shower. Cure time and product compatibility vary, so do not assume the joint is ready based on appearance alone.
DAP identifies its Silicone Max Kitchen & Bath Sealant for shower use and instructs users to remove old caulk and ensure the area is clean and dry. It is one manufacturer example, not evidence that a particular sealant is best or that any sealant makes a damp bathroom mold-proof. DAP’s Kwik Seal Kitchen & Bath Caulk likewise includes preparation instructions; check the current label to confirm it suits the intended surfaces and use.

3. Reduce moisture to help prevent recurrence
The EPA says the key to mold control is moisture control. In bathrooms, it recommends increasing ventilation—by running an exhaust fan or opening a window—and cleaning more frequently to prevent or minimize recurring mold. Repair leaks and deal with persistent dampness around the shower as well. Mold can return after cleaning or replacement if moisture remains.
- Run the bathroom exhaust fan or open a window to improve ventilation.
- Clean the shower and surrounding surfaces more regularly.
- Fix leaks and address areas that stay damp.
- Let cleaned joints dry fully before resealing.
Choose the approach based on the caulk bead
| Condition | Practical approach | Work involved |
|---|---|---|
| Intact bead with a small, cleanable patch | Scrub with detergent and water; dry thoroughly. | Cleaning only. |
| Failed bead or discoloration that remains embedded after cleaning | Remove the old caulk, clean and dry the joint, then apply suitable new sealant. | Removal, surface preparation, resealing, and waiting for the label-specified cure time. |
Neither approach addresses a leak or persistent humidity by itself. The EPA’s basic mold cleanup steps and bathroom guidance in A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home explain the roles of removal, drying, and moisture control. For cleaning-product guidance, see the EPA’s page on whether to use bleach to clean up mold.

Safety while cleaning or resealing
Open doors or windows for fresh air when using cleaning products, follow product labels, and never mix cleaners. The CDC advises that people with allergies, immune suppression, underlying lung disease, asthma, or COPD should not take part in mold cleanup. The CDC’s Mold Clean Up Guidelines and Recommendations provide further guidance; its stronger respirator advice addresses mold cleanup generally and extensive work, not a claim that a heavy-duty respirator is routinely needed for every small shower patch.
