For a wall- or ceiling-mounted screen that disappears into a case between movie nights, the Elite Screens Yard Master Manual Tension is the best all-around choice: its tab-tensioned surface is listed for ultra-short-, short-, and standard-throw projectors, while its manual design avoids outdoor power and battery management. Choose the basic Yard Master Manual for lower complexity and cost, Yard Master Electric for powered operation, Yard Master Wireless when cabling is impractical, or WraithVeil Dual when you need rear projection.

This guide covers retractable roll-down screens mounted to a wall, beam, pergola, patio cover, or similar structure. Folding-frame products such as the Yard Master 2 are portable outdoor screens, not retractable screens in a housing.

Best overall: Yard Master Manual Tension

The Manual Tension is the balanced pick for homeowners who want a retractable installation and a controlled image without wiring. Side tabs pull the material laterally, reducing the waves and curl that can distract viewers on sports graphics, game interfaces, subtitles, and bright scenes. Elite lists a 1.1-gain matte-white surface, a 180-degree viewing angle, black backing, four-sided masking borders, IP65 protection, and compatibility with ultra-short-, short-, and standard-throw projectors. It is listed in 115- and 125-inch 16:9 sizes.

  • 【Tab-Tensioned for a Perfectly Flat Image】 The integrated tab-tension system keeps the screen surface taut and wrinkle-free for superior picture quality from edge to edge. It still requires a suitable permanent mounting surface and manual operation. “Compatible with UST” does not guarantee a perfect image: verify the projector’s throw calculator, mounting height, bottom-edge height, and digital-alignment limits.

Best value: Yard Master Manual

Choose the basic Manual when you use a standard-throw projector, want the fewest failure points, and accept that a non-tensioned outdoor surface may show waves. Its 1.1-gain matte-white material, 180-degree viewing angle, IP65 rating, and 100- and 120-inch 16:9 sizes suit occasional backyard movies. Elite describes a slow-retraction mechanism, so the screen rises into its case without being manually fed upward; the comparison lists ground stakes.

This is not the preferred screen for UST or short-throw projection. The case also needs a permanent wall, beam, ceiling, pergola, or patio structure.

Best plug-in motorized: Yard Master Electric

The Yard Master Electric is the conventional choice for a frequently used patio or outdoor room with safe power access. Elite lists RF remote and wireless 12-volt-trigger control, 1.1 gain, a 180-degree viewing angle, and 100-, 120-, 150-, and 165-inch 16:9 sizes. A magnetic weight-bar bracket can help reduce sway when wall-mounted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is listed for standard-throw projectors and IP33, below the manual models’ IP65 rating. Include an outdoor-rated outlet, protected cable route, and appropriate electrical work in the project budget. A $1,184 starting price is not a quote for every size.

Best cordless: Yard Master Wireless

The Wireless uses an integrated rechargeable battery, RF remote, and manual control buttons, so no power plug is needed while the screen operates. It is a practical solution for a deck or yard where conduit would be unattractive. The listed 125- and 140-inch versions use 1.1-gain material with a 180-degree viewing angle.

It remains a standard-throw, non-tensioned screen and carries an IPX3 rating. Elite’s comparison does not list a sway-control method for this model. Confirm charging access, cold-weather behavior, and replacement-battery policy; the published comparison confirms rechargeable operation but does not establish a runtime figure.

Best premium cordless: Yard Master Wireless Tab-Tension

This model combines battery operation with the flatter surface needed by short-throw and UST projectors. Elite lists 1.1 gain, a 180-degree viewing angle, 125- and 140-inch 16:9 sizes, and compatibility with ultra-short-, short-, and standard-throw projectors.

The premium is difficult to justify for rare use, and the IPX3 housing still needs protection from weather. No ground stakes are listed, so plan mounting and sway control independently.

Best premium plug-in front projection: Electric Tension CineWhite

Choose the Yard Master Electric Tension CineWhite when you have power and want motorized operation plus tab tension. It is listed for ultra-short-, short-, and standard-throw projectors, with 1.1 gain, a 180-degree viewing angle, RF or 12-volt-trigger control, and 110-, 125-, and 140-inch 16:9 sizes. It carries IP33 and costs more than the manual alternatives.

Best for rear projection: Electric Tension WraithVeil Dual

WraithVeil Dual is the specialist option for a projector behind the screen or for audiences on both sides. Elite lists front/rear projection, tab tension, 0.8 gain, a 150-degree viewing angle, and 100-, 120-, 135-, and 150-inch 16:9 sizes. Its lower gain and narrower angle than the front-projection CineWhite models require more careful projector placement and control of light behind the screen. At a listed starting price of $3,058, it is usually excessive for a normal front-projection movie setup.

Retractable versus portable outdoor screens

A retractable screen rewards a fixed entertaining area: once brackets are installed, the case stays in place and the image surface disappears when retracted. It avoids assembling a frame before every event and looks cleaner on a patio, pool deck, garage, or pergola.

The trade-off is structural and environmental. You need a sound mounting surface, accurate leveling, and a plan for wind. A retractable case costs more than many basic folding frames, is less portable, and can develop waves or suffer damage if left extended. A Yard Master 2-style folding frame is the better answer when you need to move the screen, have no suitable structure, or do not need it hidden between uses. Inflatable and fixed-frame screens solve different problems as well.

Choose the screen material and gain

Matte white for most nighttime audiences

Elite lists 1.1-gain matte-white material and 180-degree viewing angles on most Yard Master retractable models. This is the sensible default for a broad backyard audience after sunset because it spreads brightness across a wide seating area.

WraithVeil Dual for rear projection

WraithVeil Dual is semi-transparent so an image can be viewed from either side. Its listed 0.8 gain and 150-degree angle mean it is not a drop-in upgrade for ordinary front projection.

Gain is not a quality score

Higher gain can increase on-axis brightness but may reduce uniformity or reveal hot-spotting. Lower gain can look more consistent but demands more projector output. Compare gain only among similar materials; an outdoor screen does not make daylight disappear. Ambient-light-rejecting material may help in bright conditions, but viewing angle and projector position become more restrictive, and the listed Yard Master materials are intended primarily for nighttime use.

Match the projector and screen

Screen Listed projector compatibility Important qualification
Yard Master Manual Standard throw Not preferred for UST
Yard Master Manual Tension Ultra-short, short, standard throw Verify exact UST geometry
Yard Master Electric Standard throw Requires power
Electric Tension CineWhite Ultra-short, short, standard throw IP33 housing
Electric Tension WraithVeil Dual Ultra-short, short, standard throw Front/rear placement and backlight control matter
Yard Master Wireless Standard throw Battery operation does not add UST compatibility
Wireless Tab-Tension Ultra-short, short, standard throw Confirm mounting and charging plan

“Standard throw” places the projector farther away; short-throw and UST designs sit progressively closer. Use the projector manufacturer’s throw-distance calculator before ordering. Triple-laser compatibility shown in Elite’s shop filters is not a substitute for checking the projector’s screen-material requirements or possible laser-speckle behavior.

Size, mounting, and site checklist

Do not choose by diagonal alone. Measure:

  • Case width, mounting depth, bracket spacing, and the structure’s load capacity.
  • Image height, drop below the case, and clearance from furniture, railings, pool equipment, and walkways.
  • Projector throw distance, lens offset, brightness, and audience seating distance.
  • Wind exposure and a method to keep the lower bar from swinging.
  • Whether the 16:9 image suits your content; verify the exact model for 4:3 or presentation use.

Elite lists wood screws and drywall anchors in its comparison, but included hardware is not automatically correct for masonry, concrete, brick, stucco, treated timber, or exterior framing. Locate structural members or select anchors rated for the actual substrate. Large housings may warrant professional installation.

Weather, wind, and outdoor electrical safety

Elite lists IP65 for the Manual and Manual Tension, IP33 for the plug-in Electric models, and IPX3 for the Wireless models. These ratings describe specified water exposure; they are not permission to leave a screen outdoors permanently. They do not guarantee protection from wind-driven rain, condensation, freezing temperatures, salt air, dust, or repeated wet storage. Elite’s user guide disclaims damage associated with misuse or weather-related negligence: Yard Master user guide.

Quick Recap

  • Retract the screen whenever wind increases, weather changes, or the material cannot remain stable.
  • Never allow the fabric to flap violently; billowing can twist the bar, overload brackets, crease the material, or damage the housing.
  • Keep projectors, power supplies, controls, and cable connections off wet ground and protected from splash.
  • For poolside power, obtain professional electrical advice and follow applicable outdoor and electrical-safety requirements.
  • Charge battery models where the charger and connection can remain dry; “wireless” means wireless during operation, not battery-free.

What not to buy

  • An unbranded screen with no clear material, gain, compatibility, mounting, or weather guidance.
  • A non-tensioned screen for a demanding UST installation.
  • A screen larger than the projector can illuminate comfortably after sunset.
  • A product advertised as outdoor-rated with no storage or weather limitations.
  • A discontinued premium product treated as a current recommendation. Screen Innovations’ Solo Pro 2 page currently marks that model discontinued and points toward newer products; its support page is here.

Decision guide

  1. Choose Yard Master Manual for the lowest complexity and a standard-throw projector.
  2. Choose Manual Tension for the best balance of flatness, projector compatibility, and no wiring.
  3. Choose Electric Tension CineWhite or Yard Master Electric when routine remote operation and safe power matter most.
  4. Choose Wireless when a power cable is inconvenient; choose Wireless Tab-Tension when you also need a flatter surface or UST compatibility.
  5. Choose WraithVeil Dual only when rear or two-sided viewing is a genuine requirement.
  6. Choose a folding-frame screen instead if portability matters more than hiding the screen in a mounted case.
