Choose a yard-drainage fix by tracing where the water comes from and where it can safely go. Roof runoff from a downspout may need a simple extension; water flowing across the surface may call for grading or a swale; a persistent low spot may need a catch basin. A French drain is for underground conveyance, not a universal cure for every soggy yard. If there is no suitable outlet—or the site can safely hold and absorb the water—capture options such as a rain garden may be a better fit.
Diagnose the source before choosing a fix
Observe the yard during and after rain. Note where water first appears, which direction it travels, and whether the puddle drains or remains for several days. Those clues help distinguish roof runoff, surface flow, a low spot, and persistently wet soil. Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District describes puddles or soggy areas that persist for several days after storms as a common drainage concern.
- Water appears below a roof edge or downspout: Check for clogged or damaged gutters and see where the downspout releases water. Concentrated roof runoff may be the main source.
- Water flows in from higher ground: This is surface runoff. Look for its path and a suitable place it could be directed without affecting another property.
- Water collects in one low spot: A catch basin may collect surface water there, provided a pipe can carry it to a suitable outlet.
- Soil stays wet without an obvious flow path: The cause may be more than surface runoff. A buried drain or infiltration feature should not be installed on guesswork; site conditions matter.
For signs such as erosion, water entering a basement, or foundation cracks, the Government of Canada identifies drainage concerns that warrant attention beyond a quick yard-level fix. Consider a local drainage professional if the problem is persistent or affecting the building.
Choose the method that fits the water path
| Method | Best fit | How it handles water | Key condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downspout extension or splash block | Roof water discharged beside a vulnerable area | Moves the discharge across the surface | It must release water to a safe, suitable area. |
| Grading or swale | Runoff traveling over the surface | Shapes a shallow route to an outlet | The route must not create a problem for a neighbor. |
| Catch basin with buried pipe | Surface water collecting at a low point | Collects water at a slotted inlet and conveys it through pipe | The pipe needs a suitable destination. |
| French drain | Underground conveyance where a buried drain and outlet suit the site | Uses perforated pipe surrounded by gravel to collect and carry water | It needs a suitable outlet and a design appropriate to site conditions. |
| Rain garden or dry well | Runoff that may be retained and infiltrated on site | Holds water for infiltration rather than simply sending it elsewhere | Soil, groundwater, location, and local requirements must support the design. |
Start with roof runoff
Inspect the gutters and downspout discharge before excavating. A downspout extension or anchored splash block can move roof water away from a vulnerable area, but only if it releases the water somewhere suitable. Arlington County describes redirecting downspouts to vegetated landscapes or underground gravel storage such as dry wells; Ask Extension also lists extensions as a way to redirect runoff. Neither makes a single foundation setback right for every site.

Do not direct concentrated discharge toward a foundation, an unstable slope, or neighboring land. If a downspout is already connected to buried piping, confirm where it discharges before changing the setup.
Shape surface flow with grading or a swale
Grading changes the ground surface so water flows along a planned route. A swale is a broad, shallow channel that carries runoff to a suitable outlet. It is not simply a trench: its gentle, open shape manages surface flow, and vegetation helps protect the soil from erosion. Building-science guidance from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory describes grading and swales as ways to channel stormwater away from buildings.
Use grass or other vegetation to protect the channel where it can grow. On a shaded, steep, or long route where grass is a poor fit, appropriately sized stone can help limit erosion; a stone-lined swale is often called a dry creek bed. In either case, the channel needs a destination. Grading that merely sends water downhill onto a neighbor relocates the problem rather than solving it.

Collect ponding at a low spot with a catch basin
A catch basin is a collection box with a slotted inlet and an outlet connected to buried pipe. Place it where surface water naturally gathers, then route the outlet to a suitable destination. A shallow swale can guide water from a broader area toward the basin.

This is a surface-collection approach: water runs into the inlet. A French drain instead uses a buried perforated pipe surrounded by gravel to collect and convey water underground. Do not install a basin unless you have a workable pipe route and an acceptable outlet.
Use a French drain only when underground conveyance fits
A French drain is a trench containing gravel and perforated pipe, typically wrapped or separated from soil by sturdy landscape fabric. Ask Extension describes lining the trench with fabric, adding a gravel bed and perforated plastic pipe, then placing gravel around and over the pipe. The fabric helps keep surrounding soil from mixing into the gravel.

One Ask Extension answer, published April 15, 2019, gives an example trench about 1.5 feet deep and 10–12 inches wide, while explicitly noting that dimensions vary with the selected pipe and desired depth. Treat those measurements as an example, not a standard specification for every yard.
If you plan to finish the drain with topsoil and sod, the fabric can be pulled across the top of the gravel before adding soil. If gravel will remain exposed, protect the fabric edges from sediment. The drain still needs a suitable outlet; a French drain without one may leave water in place or shift the problem elsewhere. In a designed system, it may be combined with a catch basin or piping from a downspout or sump pump, but the route and discharge must be appropriate for the site.

Consider capture and infiltration when the site supports them
Rain gardens and dry wells retain runoff with the aim of allowing it to infiltrate, rather than simply conveying it to another location. They are not automatic fixes for standing water: soil, groundwater, nearby foundations, and local design requirements affect whether an installation is appropriate.

Don't worry about your extension being washed away by the rain water. We will provide you with extra screws. You can fix the adapter to the downspout with screws.
Oregon State University Extension warns that dry wells can be expensive and involve complicated permit processes. It notes that a rain garden or flow-through planter may work in some situations. Check local guidance for siting, design, and permitting criteria before choosing an infiltration system.
Check the outlet and local rules before digging
Before moving soil or connecting drainage components, check the requirements in your jurisdiction. Rules may cover excavation, grading, permits, inspections, or connections to stormwater infrastructure. Government of Canada guidance advises checking local permit and inspection requirements. Washington State University Extension’s material-moving permit information is specific to Clark County, Washington, so it should not be treated as a rule for other places.
Quick Recap
- Identify the outlet before choosing a conveyance method; gravity drainage requires a workable route and destination.
- Make sure redirected runoff will not create a nuisance, erosion, or a drainage problem for a neighbor. Ask Extension cautions that runoff sent to an unsuitable area can move the problem downhill and negatively affect neighbors.
- Do not assume a storm sewer connection is permitted, or add a pump or connection without confirming local authorization and system requirements.
- For persistent wetness, erosion, water entering a basement, or foundation cracking, seek local drainage expertise rather than relying on another shallow DIY intervention.
