An unheated garage is not a safe default storage spot for everything in winter. Freezing, freeze-thaw cycles, dampness, temperature extremes, and fire or carbon-monoxide hazards affect different items in different ways. These seven categories are practical warnings—not a universal ban: check the product label or technical data sheet, and never move flammable products indoors just to protect them from freezing.
1. Latex paint
Latex paint can be ruined by freezing and thawing. Sherwin-Williams warns that “the freeze-thaw cycle will ruin latex paint” and advises against storing it where freezing temperatures are possible. See Sherwin-Williams’ paint touch-up guidance.
Benjamin Moore gives 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C) as general advice for storing leftover paint, while also advising owners to prevent freezing and consult the specific product’s Technical Data Sheet for its storage requirements. Treat that range as general guidance, not as a substitute for the product instructions. Benjamin Moore’s leftover-paint guidance explains the distinction.
2. Hazardous household products that must not freeze
Some hazardous household products need protection from freezing. Indiana’s Department of Environmental Management advises against keeping such products in an unheated garage during winter—but makes an explicit exception for products labeled “Flammable” or “Combustible.” Follow the storage directions on each container; do not treat “bring it indoors” as a safe answer for every chemical. Indiana IDEM’s storage guidance sets out this distinction.

In particular, never store gasoline or other fuels indoors. Keep flammable and combustible products away from ignition sources, and use the storage location and precautions specified by the product’s label and local fire-safety guidance. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends storing oil, gasoline, paints, propane, and varnishes in a shed away from the home; that is a fire-safety recommendation, not evidence that every one of those products is freeze-sensitive. USFA’s basement and garage fire-safety guidance provides the recommendation. The CDC likewise warns against storing gasoline or other fuels indoors: winter-storm safety guidelines.
3. Shelf-stable food
Canned and other shelf-stable foods may seem suited to a garage, but dampness and high or low temperature extremes can make it a poor storage location. USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service specifically says not to store shelf-stable food in a damp garage or anywhere exposed to temperature extremes. Keep food away from petroleum products, too: gasoline, oil, paint, and solvents can give food unwanted odors. See USDA FSIS shelf-stable food guidance and FoodSafety.gov’s emergency food-storage guidance.

For emergency food storage, FoodSafety.gov recommends a cool, dry, dark place in the range of 40°F (4°C) to 70°F (21°C). That is a recommendation for emergency food storage, not a guarantee that every garage within that range is suitable; dampness and nearby chemicals still matter.
4. Frozen food stored in a garage freezer exposed to temperature swings
A garage freezer is only a reliable place for frozen food if the appliance can maintain the required temperature in the conditions where it is installed. USDA FSIS says frozen food should be kept at 0°F (−18°C) or lower to retain quality. A garage that gets very cold or experiences changing temperatures may affect freezer operation; check the freezer manufacturer’s instructions for its permitted ambient conditions and monitor the food-storage temperature. USDA’s freezing and food safety guidance covers the food-temperature recommendation.

Do not use the garage as a place to thaw food. USDA FSIS warns that thawing food there can leave it unsafe to eat. Use a safe thawing method instead, as described in the same USDA guidance.
5. Oil, gasoline, paint, propane, and varnish stored near ignition sources
These materials warrant attention because of fire risk, not because the same freeze rule applies to all of them. USFA advises keeping items that can burn on shelves away from appliances, and recommends storing oil, gasoline, paints, propane, and varnishes in a shed away from the home. Read the product’s storage instructions and keep materials away from heat, sparks, and appliances. Do not bring fuels indoors to avoid cold. See USFA’s garage fire-safety recommendations.

6. Compressed gas containers near heat or sparks
Compressed gas containers should not be left where heat or sparks can reach them. A U.S. Army Fort Knox handout advises capping containers and storing them away from heat and sparks in a ventilated, temperature-controlled area. This is general safety guidance, not a product-specific storage temperature: follow the cylinder label and supplier instructions for the gas and container you have. The handout also warns against using a barbecue grill in a garage or another enclosed space. Fort Knox’s winter storage handout contains these precautions.
7. A car left running in the garage
A running car is not a stored item, but warming one in a garage is a critical winter safety hazard. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says, “Never warm up your car in a garage.” Exhaust can expose people to carbon monoxide, even when the garage door is open. Start and warm the vehicle outdoors, away from the home’s openings. This is a carbon-monoxide rule, not a temperature-storage recommendation. See EPA winter-weather indoor-air guidance.

How to decide what can stay in your garage
- Check the exact product instructions. Labels and technical data sheets take priority over a general rule of thumb; there is no single storage temperature that applies to every household product.
- Separate freeze risk from fire risk. A product that should not freeze is not automatically safe to move indoors. Flammable and combustible products, gasoline, and other fuels require their own precautions.
- Consider conditions, not just the season. An attached or insulated garage may behave differently from a damp, unheated one, but conditions can still change. Keep food dry and away from petroleum products, and protect freeze-sensitive products according to their instructions.
- Keep combustible items clear of appliances and ignition sources. For fuels, paints, propane, and other hazardous materials, follow fire-safety guidance and the product label rather than improvising a storage location.
