The best degreaser for a range hood depends on what you are cleaning. For most homeowners, the right answer is not one magic spray. Use hot water and dish soap for washable filters, a kitchen-safe alkaline degreaser for stubborn hood grease, and an EPA Safer Choice cleaner for routine wipe-downs where lower-toxicity ingredients matter.
On our job sites, we treat range hood grease as a home-system issue, not just a cleaning chore. A greasy hood can reduce capture efficiency, push residue into the blower and duct, create odors, stain surrounding cabinets, and raise fire risk. If the grease is only on the exterior shell and filters, a careful DIY cleaning usually works. If grease is dripping, the fan is coated, airflow is weak, or the duct is contaminated, it is time to stop spraying and bring in a qualified hood-cleaning or mechanical contractor.
For a typical US homeowner in 2026, expect to spend about $4 to $18 for a ready-to-use degreaser bottle, $10 to $30 for a concentrated homeowner-size jug, and under $25 for basic filter-cleaning supplies if you already own gloves, microfiber cloths, a brush, and a bucket or deep sink. Professional residential range hood cleaning commonly starts around $119 to $147 for basic service, while more involved residential hood cleaning often runs about $200 to $400 for a standard wall hood and $350 to $700 for larger, island, custom, or heavily greased systems.
What Makes a Good Range Hood Degreaser?
A good range hood degreaser needs to cut cooking oil without damaging the surface below it. That sounds simple until you look at the different materials in one hood assembly: stainless exterior panels, painted steel, aluminum mesh filters, stainless baffle filters, plastic light lenses, electrical controls, fan wheels, seams, gaskets, and sometimes food-prep-adjacent surfaces below.

Most strong kitchen degreasers are alkaline. Many household degreasers sit around the high-pH range compared with ordinary all-purpose cleaners, often roughly pH 9.6 to 12.8. That alkalinity helps break down greasy soil, but it also raises the risk of dulling aluminum, streaking stainless, irritating skin, or damaging finishes if the product is too strong, left too long, or not rinsed.
The contractor rule is simple: start with the least aggressive cleaner that works. Move from hot water and dish soap, to a kitchen degreaser, to professional cleaning only when the lower step cannot handle the buildup. Do not start with oven cleaner or harsh caustic products on a residential range hood. Those products can discolor stainless, attack aluminum, soften paint, and damage plastics.
Best Degreaser Picks by Use Case
Here is the practical short list we would give a homeowner standing in the cleaning aisle. Always check the hood manual and product label before use, especially on aluminum, painted surfaces, brushed stainless, and coated finishes.
| Use case | Best type of product | Typical 2026 cost | Best for | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heavy greasy stainless hood exterior | Kitchen-safe heavy-duty alkaline degreaser | $4 to $18 per spray bottle | Sticky film, yellowed residue, frequent frying | Do not let it dry on the surface; rinse and wipe with the grain |
| Routine weekly cleaning | EPA Safer Choice degreaser or lower-toxicity kitchen cleaner | $4 to $18 per bottle | Light film, fingerprints, food-adjacent surfaces | May need more dwell time or repeat passes on old grease |
| Metal mesh or baffle filters | Hot water, dish soap, baking soda, soft brush | Usually under $25 in supplies | Washable residential filters | Charcoal filters are usually replaced, not washed |
| Large or repeated cleaning jobs | Concentrated degreaser diluted per label | $10 to $30 per homeowner-size jug | High-use kitchens, rental turns, renovation cleanup | Wrong dilution can damage finishes or leave residue |
| Dripping grease, coated fan, dirty duct | Professional hood cleaning | $200 to $700 typical residential specialty range | System-level grease buildup | Spray cleaning will not clean hidden duct or blower surfaces |
Best Heavy-Duty Choice: Dawn Professional Heavy-Duty Degreaser
For thick cooking grease on hard, washable kitchen surfaces, a professional-style kitchen degreaser such as Dawn Professional Heavy-Duty Degreaser is a strong practical pick. It works well when a hood has that tacky film that does not come off with a normal all-purpose cleaner.
Use it where strength matters: stainless hood shells, removable metal parts, and hard surfaces that can be rinsed. Spray, allow a short dwell time per label directions, agitate with a non-scratch pad or microfiber cloth, then rinse and dry. Do not spray it directly into switches, lights, seams, motors, or control areas.
Best Citrus-Style Degreaser: Zep Heavy-Duty Citrus Degreaser
A citrus heavy-duty degreaser is useful for stubborn hood exteriors, greasy backsplash areas, and removable metal parts. Zep Heavy-Duty Citrus Degreaser is a common big-box option for homeowners who need more cutting power than dish soap.
The same cautions apply: test a small spot, use dwell time instead of aggressive scrubbing, and rinse thoroughly. Citrus does not automatically mean gentle. Many citrus degreasers are still strong cleaners and can affect some finishes if used carelessly.
Best Lower-Toxicity Routine Choice: Krud Kutter Kitchen Degreaser
For routine range hood maintenance, we like the EPA Safer Choice category. EPA Safer Choice certification is a useful trust marker because it identifies products designed to perform while using ingredients that are safer for human health and the environment. Krud Kutter Kitchen Degreaser/All-Purpose Cleaner advertises Safer Choice certification, a fragrance-free formula, no bleach or ammonia, and food-prep-surface safety when used as directed.
This is the kind of cleaner that makes sense for weekly or biweekly wipe-downs, especially in households that want to avoid harsher fumes. It may take two passes on old, polymerized grease. That is fine. Routine cleaning is about preventing the hood from ever reaching the sticky, fire-risk stage.
Best Filter Cleaner: Hot Water, Dish Soap, and Baking Soda
For most washable metal mesh or baffle filters, the best cleaner is not a spray bottle. It is a deep sink or tub, very hot water, a strong dish soap, and a few tablespoons of baking soda. Soak the filters for 10 to 20 minutes, brush gently, rinse well, and air-dry completely before reinstalling.

- Keep It Clean: Keeping up with cleaning your range, range hood, or grates can be a challenge - but Weiman's daily cleaner makes it easier; Simply spray and wipe with paper towel or a damp sponge or towel; For tougher baked on build-up and food splatter, we recommend letting the product sit on your surface for up to 30 mins for maximum effectiveness.
Metal filters are often washable. Charcoal filters in ductless recirculating hoods are different. They capture odor and some contaminants, and they are usually replaced every few months according to the hood manufacturer. Washing a charcoal filter rarely restores it properly.
How to Clean a Range Hood Without Damaging It
Plan on 30 to 60 minutes for a normal residential hood and 90 minutes or more if the filters have not been cleaned in a year. Wear nitrile gloves, protect the cooktop, and make sure the hood is off and cool before you begin. If the hood has exposed bulbs, remove them only if the manual allows it and the power is off.
Step 1: Remove and Soak the Filters
Remove the metal mesh or baffle filters first. This improves access and keeps dirty filter runoff from re-soiling the hood body. Fill a deep sink, bucket, or plastic tub with very hot water, dish soap, and baking soda. Soak for 10 to 20 minutes, then scrub gently with a soft brush. Rinse until the water runs clear.
If the filters are aluminum, avoid harsh caustic cleaners and harsh dishwasher cycles unless the manual says they are acceptable. Aluminum can discolor. That discoloration may not hurt performance, but it looks bad and can concern homeowners after an otherwise successful cleaning.
Step 2: Degrease the Exterior Shell
Spray the degreaser onto a microfiber cloth or non-scratch pad rather than directly onto the hood whenever you are near controls, seams, lights, or vents. Wipe from top to bottom. On stainless steel, wipe with the grain, not across it. Give the cleaner a few minutes of dwell time if the label allows it, but do not let it dry on the finish.
After the grease breaks loose, rinse with a clean damp cloth. Then dry with a fresh microfiber towel. Drying matters on stainless because it reduces streaking and prevents cleaner residue from sitting in the grain.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 3: Clean the Underside Carefully
The underside of the hood collects the heaviest residue. Work slowly here. Avoid spraying liquid into the fan motor, electrical box, control board, switch openings, bulb sockets, and unsealed seams. If grease has collected around those areas, apply cleaner to a cloth and wipe by hand.
If you see heavy grease on the fan wheel or inside the duct opening, do not assume the visible part is the whole problem. Grease often travels into the blower housing and duct. Residential homeowners can clean accessible, removable parts, but hidden duct contamination is a different job.

- FAST-ACTING RESULTS: Spray-on formula works quickly to dissolve grease and oil buildup, making cleaning easier and more efficient
Step 4: Reinstall Only When Everything Is Dry
Let filters dry fully before reinstalling. A damp filter can drip onto the cooktop, hold odor, and attract fresh dust and grease. Once everything is back in place, run the fan for a few minutes and check airflow. If suction is still weak after clean filters, the issue may be blower performance, duct layout, a blocked termination, or makeup air.
Costs: DIY Degreaser vs Professional Cleaning
Most homeowners can keep a normal residential range hood clean for very little money if they stay ahead of buildup. The cost jumps when grease reaches the blower, duct, roof cap, or a custom hood assembly with poor access.

| Option | Typical 2026 US cost | What is included | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic DIY cleaning | Under $25 if you own common supplies | Dish soap, baking soda, gloves, cloths, brush | Monthly to quarterly filter cleaning |
| Ready-to-use degreaser | $4 to $18 per bottle | Kitchen spray for hood exterior and hard surfaces | Weekly wipe-downs and moderate grease |
| Concentrated degreaser | $10 to $30 per jug | Dilutable cleaner for repeated use | High-use kitchens or multiple cleanings |
| Replacement metal mesh filter | $15 to $60 each | Brand- and size-specific replacement filter | Damaged, bent, clogged, or missing filters |
| Basic residential pro cleaning | $119 to $147 starting range | Basic range hood cleaning | Light professional service |
| Specialty residential hood cleaning | $200 to $400 standard wall hood; $350 to $700 larger/custom/island hood | More involved cleaning, heavier grease, access challenges | Heavy buildup or higher-end systems |
| Commercial hood cleaning | $300 to $700 low-volume; $450 to $1,200 moderate; $600 to $1,800 high-volume; $1,500 to $3,000+ complex systems | Hood, filters, ducts, fan access, documentation | Restaurants and commercial-style operations |
Cost variance is usually driven by hood size, number of filters, grease thickness, fan condition, duct access, island versus wall location, roof access, cooking volume, charbroiling or frying, travel fees, night or weekend scheduling, and whether formal documentation is required.
There is also a construction cost issue hiding behind some cleaning calls. If grease buildup reveals poor duct design, missing cleanouts, a bad wall or roof termination, a missing backdraft damper, or an undersized or overpowered hood, cleaning will not solve the root problem. The fix may become mechanical repair, duct correction, or hood replacement.
When to DIY vs When to Hire a Pro
DIY is appropriate when the grease is on accessible surfaces: the exterior hood shell, underside panels, removable filters, and surrounding backsplash. If the hood is working normally and you are doing routine maintenance, homeowner cleaning is reasonable.
Hire a pro when grease is dripping from the hood, the fan sounds strained, airflow is poor after the filters are cleaned, cooking odors linger for hours, the duct or fan wheel is visibly coated, or the hood serves commercial-style cooking equipment. Also hire a pro if access requires roof work, disassembly beyond the removable filters, or work around electrical components.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor commercial kitchens, this is not just housekeeping. Commercial exhaust cleaning is tied to fire-code compliance, insurance expectations, and local authority having jurisdiction requirements. NFPA 96 is intended to reduce fire hazards from public and private commercial cooking operations, and industry practice treats the grease-control system as a whole: hood, filters, duct, fan, access panels, fire suppression, cleaning frequency, and documentation.
High-volume charbroil, wok, and fryer operations may need monthly or quarterly service. Moderate-volume restaurants often fall into quarterly or semiannual rhythms. Low-volume seasonal or light cooking may be annual, depending on local enforcement and actual grease accumulation. For commercial clients, we want before-and-after photos, service tags, and clear documentation. That paperwork matters when a fire inspector or insurer asks what was cleaned and when.

Safety, Code, and Permit Notes
Cleaning a residential range hood usually does not require a permit. Replacing or modifying the system may. Range hood installation or replacement can trigger mechanical or electrical permits, especially when adding exterior ducting, changing a circuit, adding fire suppression, installing makeup air, or altering wall or roof penetrations.
Residential codes commonly address kitchen exhaust termination, ducting, and makeup air. A hood that dumps moist, greasy air into an attic is a defect, not a cleaning issue. A long, crushed, undersized, or poorly terminated duct can reduce airflow and leave more grease behind. A very powerful hood can also create pressure problems in a tight house if makeup air is not addressed.

On remodels, we design for cleanability. That means accessible filters, removable baffles, short smooth duct runs where practical, proper exterior termination, a working backdraft damper, and enough access to inspect and maintain the system. A beautiful custom hood that cannot be serviced is a future callback waiting to happen.

Do not use oven cleaner on a range hood unless the hood manufacturer specifically allows it for that exact surface. Oven cleaners can etch, discolor, or strip finishes on stainless, painted metal, aluminum, and plastic. They are too aggressive for many residential hood parts.
Never mix cleaning chemicals. Bleach mixed with ammonia or acidic cleaners can create hazardous fumes. Many kitchen degreasers already have active chemistry doing the work; combining products does not make them better, it makes them unpredictable.
Avoid steel wool and abrasive pads on stainless steel. They scratch the finish and can leave rust-prone metal particles behind. Use microfiber cloths, soft brushes, and non-scratch pads. Always wipe stainless with the grain.
Do not spray degreaser into motors, switches, control boards, light sockets, or open seams. Spray the cloth instead. Liquids and electrical components do not belong together, and a soaked control panel can turn a $12 cleaning job into a service call.
Maintenance Schedule That Actually Works
For a household that cooks a few times per week, wipe the hood exterior every one to two weeks and clean washable filters every two to three months. For frequent cooking, frying, searing, or wok use, wipe the exterior weekly and clean filters monthly. For light cooking, quarterly filter cleaning may be enough.

Bottom Line: The Best Degreaser Is the One Matched to the Job
For tough range hood grease, use a heavy-duty kitchen degreaser on hard washable surfaces, with careful dwell time, rinsing, and drying. For routine cleaning, an EPA Safer Choice product such as Krud Kutter Kitchen Degreaser is a smart lower-toxicity option. For filters, hot water, dish soap, baking soda, and patience usually beat aggressive chemicals.
The line between cleaning and repair is visibility. If you can remove it, soak it, wipe it, rinse it, and dry it safely, DIY is usually fine. If grease has reached the duct, fan, roof termination, or commercial exhaust system, hire a pro. Range hood grease is not just a cosmetic problem. Managed well, it keeps the kitchen cleaner, the fan moving air, and the fire risk lower.
