California has no broad statewide rebate for ordinary residential solar installations, and the federal 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Targeted options remain: eligible solar-and-battery projects may qualify for the CPUC’s Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP), some income-qualified homeowners can receive no-cost rooftop solar through DAC-SASH, and eligible customers may get a utility-bill discount through DAC-GT. GoGreen Home is a financing option—not a rebate.
Which California solar programs might fit your household?
Eligibility depends on the project, household, location and program funding. The options below are not interchangeable: some help pay for equipment, one discounts an electric bill, and one improves access to financing.

“Disadvantaged community” and income eligibility are determined under program rules, not by a contractor’s informal assessment. Confirm the relevant eligibility map, household documentation requirements, utility territory and application status with the administering program before committing to equipment or financing.
Is there a federal solar tax credit in 2026?
The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit was 30% for qualifying solar-electric property and battery storage, with no general dollar cap under the applicable rules. However, current IRS guidance says the credit is unavailable for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. That means a project placed in service in 2026 should not be budgeted on the assumption that this credit will apply. (Internal Revenue Service, 2025 guidance)

The relevant cutoff is when the property is placed in service, not simply when a contract is signed or a payment is made. If your project may have been placed in service by the cutoff, check the current IRS instructions and consult a tax professional about your facts and filing. This was a federal tax credit, not a California state solar credit.
Does California still offer a solar rebate?
Not a broad rebate for ordinary residential solar installations. The CPUC consumer FAQ says California does not currently offer rebates or incentives for solar in the context of general statewide programs, while identifying targeted pathways such as SGIP and DAC-SASH. Those programs have specific eligibility rules; they are not universal cash rebates for every homeowner who installs panels.

How to check a program before choosing a system
- Decide whether you are considering solar alone or solar paired with a battery. SGIP’s listed Residential Solar and Storage Equity incentives are for storage and paired solar, while GoGreen Home’s eligible examples also include solar photovoltaic systems paired with batteries.
- Check the federal timing issue. Do not assume a federal credit for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025; confirm any possible pre-cutoff claim with the IRS or a tax professional.
- Screen for California program eligibility. Check SGIP rules and current funds, DAC-SASH income and location criteria, and DAC-GT customer and utility requirements. If you are not installing rooftop panels, DAC-GT may still be relevant if you meet its criteria.
- Compare financing on written terms. Ask whether a lender participates in GoGreen Home, whether your project qualifies, and what rate, term, fees and repayment obligations apply. Compare those terms with other verified financing offers and a cash purchase.
- Get the project documentation before ordering. Request equipment model numbers and specifications, the proposed solar-and-storage configuration, and installer documentation. Verify that the exact equipment and installation satisfy the rules of any program you plan to use.
What “free solar” means in California
There is no universal free-solar offer from the state. DAC-SASH is a targeted program that enables eligible income-qualified homeowners in disadvantaged communities to receive no-cost rooftop solar installations. It is not a general entitlement for all California homeowners, and household, location and program requirements must be met. The CPUC identifies GRID Alternatives as its administrator.
