Plan a shop-air system around the compressor’s flow, the tools it must serve, pressure loss, moisture control and local requirements. Use piping rated for compressed-air service at the system’s operating pressure and temperature, and follow the compressor and receiver manufacturers’ instructions. There is no single pipe material or layout that suits every shop.
Plan the system from compressor to tool
Shop air is more than the pipe running around the walls. The compressor, receiver, air treatment, valves, regulators, filters, dryers, piping, hoses and point-of-use controls all affect performance and safety. A typical design considers the components in this order, but the exact arrangement depends on the equipment and its instructions:
- Compressor and aftercooling or separation, as applicable: Air leaving a compressor may carry heat and moisture. Account for the treatment or separation equipment specified for the system.
- Receiver: The storage vessel supports the air supply. Keep its drain and safety devices accessible and effective.
- Air treatment: Select separators, filters or dryers to suit the air quality required by the tools and the system’s moisture conditions.
- Distribution header and drops: Route the main line to serve the work areas, with drops and condensate controls suited to the layout.
- Point of use: Provide the needed regulator, hose, connector and other controls near each tool.
Kaeser’s Air System Piping Guide (2023) offers example layouts, not a project-specific design. It recommends consulting an expert for parameters specific to an installation.
Size piping for flow and pressure loss
Pipe diameter is not chosen from a universal shop-air chart. The required size depends on the flow demand, operating pressure, run length, fittings, valves, filters, dryers, acceptable pressure loss and possible future expansion. Undersized piping can cause pressure loss; Natural Resources Canada identifies pipe size and loop configuration as distribution-system considerations in its compressed-air system efficiency guide.

Pressure drops across the entire system, not just the straight pipe. Kaeser says a well-designed system should have no more than 10% pressure drop from compressor discharge to the farthest point in the distribution piping. That is the manufacturer’s guidance, not a universal code limit; assess the complete run, including fittings and treatment equipment, against the tools’ needs.
Choose pipe material for the service and local rules
Compare candidate piping by whether it is approved for compressed-air service, its pressure and temperature ratings, pressure loss at the required flow, behavior around condensate and corrosion, installation method, cost and ease of expansion. Do not assume ordinary plastic pipe is suitable simply because its pressure rating appears adequate: the manufacturer must designate it for the intended service, and local rules may be more restrictive.

Rules differ by jurisdiction. For example, Oregon’s Division 3, Subdivision J regulation requires pressurized piping to have adequate design and strength and limits nonmetallic pipe to products designated by the manufacturer for compressed-air or gas service. The cited Oregon rule permits PVC for compressed air only when buried or encased. This is an Oregon-specific example, not a rule for every state or country. Check the current requirements where the shop is located and use a competent installer where required.
Design for water and condensate
Receivers and distribution piping can collect liquid water. The appropriate combination of aftercooling, separators, dryers, drains, slope and point-of-use treatment depends on the equipment and air-quality needs. Follow the equipment instructions and provide a way to manage condensate rather than assuming it will disappear.

For a system without a dryer, Kaeser’s guide describes sloping the line toward a low point with a condensate drain. It also describes connecting point-of-use applications with a swan neck so condensate stays in the main line rather than flowing directly into the drop. These are design recommendations in the guide, not universal code requirements.
Oregon’s receiver rule separately requires a drain at the receiver’s lowest point and regular draining to prevent excessive liquid accumulation. That requirement is specific to the cited Oregon rule; verify the rules and instructions applicable to your receiver and location.

Keep receiver safety devices unobstructed
Receiver safety requirements are not a substitute for the vessel manufacturer’s instructions or the rules in the shop’s jurisdiction. Under Oregon’s cited regulation, a receiver must have a visible pressure gauge and spring-loaded safety valve or valves with sufficient relief capacity. The rule prohibits placing a valve between the receiver and its safety valve. Never isolate, disable or modify pressure-relief equipment to make the system easier to operate.
Use compressed air safely
Compressed air can injure people, including at relatively low pressure. Oregon OSHA warns that it can damage any part of the body without proper personal protective equipment; its compressed-air safety guidance discusses the hazard. Do not use compressed air to clean skin or clothing as though it were harmless. Workplace cleaning with compressed air is subject to safety conditions.

For tasks that require compressed air, OSHA’s Technical Manual guidance on noise recommends using only the pressure needed for the task. Quieter nozzles, silencers and individual pressure control are among the possible noise-control measures it identifies. Consider the task, exposure and applicable workplace rules when selecting and using nozzles.
