If a faucet produces only a trickle during freezing weather, a pipe may be frozen. Leave that faucet open, locate the frozen section, and warm it gradually with a safe heat source. If the pipe has burst or is visibly damaged, shut off the main water valve and call a licensed plumber.
What to do first when you suspect a frozen pipe
- Keep the affected faucet open. Open the cold-water tap served by the suspected pipe. As ice melts, the running water helps clear the line.
- Check for damage and leaks. Look for a split pipe, water spraying or pooling, or water stains. If the pipe is damaged or has burst, shut off the home’s main water valve immediately and call a licensed plumber. Do not stand in water to reach an electrical panel; get qualified electrical help if needed.
- Find the frozen section. Check exposed plumbing along exterior walls and in basements, attics, crawl spaces, garages, under kitchen or bathroom cabinets, and near where the water service enters the house. Check other faucets too; one frozen line can signal that additional pipes are affected.
- Warm an accessible frozen section slowly. Use an electric heating pad, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater positioned well away from flammable materials, or towels soaked in hot water. Keep the faucet open and continue until normal water pressure returns.
- Stop if the pipe is inaccessible or will not thaw. Contact a licensed plumber rather than taking apart walls or using an unsafe heating method.
How to thaw a frozen pipe safely
Apply gentle heat to the frozen area and work gradually. Keep electrical devices and connections away from standing water, and follow the device’s safety instructions. A portable space heater must be kept clear of combustible materials and should not be left unattended.
Never use a blowtorch, torch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or another open-flame device on a pipe. The CDC warns, “If your pipes do freeze, do not thaw them with a torch.” CDC frozen-pipe safety guidance.
Why frozen pipes can burst
Water expands when it freezes, putting pressure on plumbing. The American Red Cross notes, “No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.” Vulnerable lines include exposed outdoor plumbing and pipes in unheated basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, under cabinets, or against poorly insulated exterior walls.

When to call a licensed plumber
Call a licensed plumber if you cannot locate the frozen area, cannot safely access it, cannot thaw it, or find that it has burst. The Red Cross gives the same advice when a frozen section is inaccessible or will not thaw: American Red Cross frozen-pipe guidance. If water is near electrical equipment, do not enter it to reach a breaker or panel.

How to reduce the risk of frozen pipes
- Prepare outdoor faucets: Remove, drain, and store garden hoses. Close the indoor shutoff valves feeding outdoor hose bibs, then leave the outside valves open so remaining water can drain.
- Insulate exposed pipes: A pipe sleeve can help protect exposed hot- and cold-water lines. The Red Cross also identifies UL-listed heat tape or heat cable as options; follow product instructions and confirm the product is suitable for the pipe material and installation location.
- Keep warmer air around plumbing: Keep garage doors closed where water lines run through the garage. Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors during severe cold so household heat can reach the pipes; move cleaners and chemicals out of children’s reach.
- Maintain heat during cold spells: Keep the thermostat steady day and night. If leaving home, leave the heat on and set it no lower than 55°F, as advised by the American Red Cross.
- Consider a slow drip for exposed lines: During severe cold, let cold water drip from faucets served by exposed pipes.
- If power fails in freezing weather: FEMA advises closing the main water valve and opening spigots and supply lines to drain them, reducing the risk of burst pipes. See FEMA winter-weather guidance.
