For a small icy step or short walkway, try a municipal recipe of 1/2 gallon warm water, 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol, and six drops of dish soap. Pour a small amount over the ice, wait for it to loosen, then scrape it away. Add sand or plain clay kitty litter afterward if the surface still needs grip. This is a small-area workaround—not a tested replacement for commercial deicer—and it is not proven safe for pets, plants, or concrete. Leavenworth Public Works shares the recipe and cautions that both salt and eco-friendly melts lose effectiveness in extreme cold.
What household options can loosen ice?
Warm water, rubbing alcohol, and dish soap
The Leavenworth Public Works mixture uses 1/2 gallon of warm water, 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol, and six drops of dish soap. Alcohol provides a low-freezing-point liquid, while the soap helps it spread and adhere. Use it only on a small area with a thin layer of ice; flooding a surface can leave more water to refreeze. No controlled performance test or operating temperature is established for this particular recipe, so do not expect a guaranteed melting rate or use it as a substitute for clearing thick ice.
Salt and commercial deicers
Sodium chloride—table salt or rock salt—and calcium chloride can lower water’s freezing point, helping turn ice into slush that can be shoveled or pushed away. More is not better: excess deicer can increase damage and contamination without improving results. Poison Control explains how ice melts work and why label directions matter.
Sand, gravel, kitty litter, and wood ash
These materials add traction; they do not melt ice. Spread them where people need footing, then remove the excess after thawing. Iowa State Extension and University of Maryland Extension recommend treating abrasives as traction aids, not deicers.
#1 Best Overall
- Professional Grade Performance - This powerful ice melting formula starts working instantly on contact with ice and snow. The melt ensures complete coverage and lasting results, making winter maintenance effortless and effective. In money-saving 50lb bag
- SAFETY-MAX FORMULA Prevents Refreezing: Once your sidewalk, steps, driveway, or parking lot are clear, they will not refreeze; This adds safety for cars and pedestrians in extreme cold weather
- Versatile Usage - Perfect for all outdoor surfaces including driveways, sidewalks, steps, balconies, patios, and walkways. The effective formula works in temperatures below zero down to -15, providing reliable performance throughout winter
How to apply a DIY mixture and clear the walkway
- Clear loose snow. Shovel or scrape it away before applying any liquid.
- Use the mixture sparingly. Apply the warm-water, rubbing-alcohol, and dish-soap recipe only to thin remaining ice; do not flood the step or walkway.
- Wait, then remove the softened ice. Scrape or shovel it off instead of leaving slush to refreeze.
- Add traction if needed. Spread a thin layer of sand or plain clay kitty litter on the cleared walking area.
- Clean up after thawing. Sweep up excess grit and litter so it is not tracked indoors or carried into drains. University of Maryland Extension and Iowa State Extension advise careful application and cleanup.
How much salt should you use?
University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension says a 12-ounce coffee mug of salt is sufficient for a sidewalk or driveway strip measuring 20 feet by 2 feet. That is a specific guidance quantity, not a reason to apply more for faster melting: excess salt can increase contamination risk. See the extension’s winter runoff guidance.
What are the risks to concrete, plants, pets, and water?
Concrete, metal, vehicles, and landscaping
Deicers can damage concrete, cement, automobiles, and landscape plants. The product label’s recommended amount is intended to balance melting with potential harm to plants, concrete, soil, and water; follow it rather than spreading a heavy layer. The DIY alcohol recipe has no established guarantee of surface safety. Poison Control and Iowa State Extension describe these material and landscaping concerns.

- Environmental Consideration - This advanced formula is notably less corrosive to concrete than traditional ice melt. The environmentally conscious choice for responsible winter safety management. Apply 2-4 ounces per sq yrd
- Versatile Usage - Perfect for all outdoor surfaces including driveways, sidewalks, steps, balconies, patios, and walkways. The effective formula works in temperatures below zero down to -15, providing reliable performance throughout winter
- Use It Ahead Of Time - This is easy to apply with a shaker or straight from the bag; It is an affordable way to prevent ice formation and should be spread prior to snowfall to make shoveling easier; Follow instructions on the bag for best results
- SAFETY-MAX FORMULA Prevents Refreezing: Once your sidewalk, steps, driveway, or parking lot are clear, they will not refreeze; This adds safety for cars and pedestrians in extreme cold weather
Pets and children
Do not assume a DIY mixture or a product marketed as “eco-friendly” is pet-safe. Common chloride deicers can irritate or harm pets; wipe paws after walks and prevent pets from licking or eating ice-melt residue. Children who swallow ice-melt crystals may experience mouth irritation, rash, redness, or drooling. Poison Control provides guidance on exposure and symptoms.
Soil and waterways
Deicer runoff can move through storm sewers into waterways. University of Maryland Extension warns that winter runoff can carry deicers into the Chesapeake Bay and recommends applying only what is needed. Sweep up leftover abrasives and avoid washing deicer residue into drains. Read its winter safety guidance.

- MELTS TO -30 DEGREES: With a melting to below -30 degrees F, even the harshest of winters are no match for North Pro Heat.
- CALCIUM CHLOIRDE INFUSED: Naturally infused with calcium chloride, North Pro Heat is a proprietary blended de-icer that the professionals turn to when all other products stop working. Our secret weapon, calcium chloride, allows NPH an increased temperature range making it an ultra-fast acting premium calcium chloride blend that is among the fastest acting on the market.
- MINIMAL RESIDUE & REDUCED TRACKING: No messy white reside with North Pro Heat, NPH is naturally pink in color with no colorant or dyes added, the pink salt hue allows for increased visual coverage for more even distribution.
- OPTIMAL CRYSTAL SIZE: NPH is optimal in crystal size and shape reducing bounce and scatter allowing product to stay where you put it and not in your vegetation. NPH promotes even surface coverage while using up to 35% less product compared to standard rock salt.
- MINNESOTA MADE TESTED AND APPROVED: Made, tested, and approved in the heart of Minnesota, freezing temps are no match for North Pro Heat. Tackling snow and ice with ease during Minnesota winters and not relying on the sun for activation, spread NPH day or night for immediate results. NPH is snow & ice’s worst enemy and is no match for the unpredictable temperatures in all state.
Do not use fertilizer as a substitute
Fertilizers containing nitrogen or phosphorus are not appropriate ice melts. Virginia Cooperative Extension cautions against using these products to deice.

| Option | Melts ice or adds traction? | Cold-weather performance | Key trade-offs |

| Warm water, rubbing alcohol, and dish soap | Intended to loosen thin ice; not independently tested as a deicer | Specific operating temperature not established; the cited municipal flyer warns that melts lose effectiveness in extreme cold | Small-area workaround; surface, plant, and pet safety are not established |
| Sodium chloride or calcium chloride deicer | Melts by lowering water’s freezing point | Effectiveness decreases in extreme cold; no specific temperature is stated in the cited guidance | Use label amounts; deicers can harm concrete, vehicles, plants, soil, water, and pets |
| Sand, gravel, kitty litter, or wood ash | Adds traction; does not melt | Traction aid rather than a melting method | Sweep up excess after thawing to reduce tracking and runoff |
EPA Safer Choice notes that homemade cleaners typically do not perform as well as specially formulated commercial products and directs users to product-label instructions for ice-melt use. See EPA Safer Choice guidance.
