Redistribute the clothes, check the washer’s feet and floor, and—if it is a newly installed front-loader—verify that the shipping bolts were removed. If the warning and vibration continue after model-specific checks and a test cycle, arrange Samsung service rather than guessing which internal part has failed.
What “unbalanced” means
Samsung describes the condition this way: “The current load in the washer is unbalanced inside the tub.” During spin, wet laundry can form a heavy mass on one side. The washer may slow, add water, and tumble the load to redistribute it. On some models this is shown as Ur, meaning the machine is retrying the balance process; the cycle can therefore take longer.
Samsung’s US code guide groups UE, Ub, U6, Ur, 1 Ub, 1U6 and certain dc codes with unbalanced-load indications. Samsung’s UK guidance describes Ub/UE as a spin problem. Code meanings are model- and market-dependent, however: dc indicates an unbalanced load on some washers but a door error on others. Use the manual for your exact model and region before interpreting a code.
Most common causes and what to check
Clothes have bunched or tangled
A sheet, blanket, jeans, or other absorbent item can hold a disproportionate amount of water and pull the load to one side. Very small loads can do the same because there are too few items to counterbalance one another.

- Basket balance ring DC97-12135A fits around the top of the basket and is filled with fluid
- Genuine Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) part. Compatible Brands: Samsung,Kenmore
- This basket balance ring (part number DC97-12135A) is for washers
- The balance ring acts as a counterweight to keep the spin basket balanced as it agitates and spins
- Pause the washer if your model permits it safely.
- Untangle bedding and separate items that have wrapped together.
- Spread the laundry evenly around the drum or basket.
- Restart using the model’s instructions. If the load is unusually small, add suitable items rather than washing one heavy article alone, and choose a lower spin speed if the cycle offers that option.
Samsung’s US general guide gives 3–5 pounds (about one-third full) as a small-load example and 6–16 pounds (about three-quarters full) as a large-load example; it notes that one pair of jeans is about one pound. These are general figures, not a replacement for your washer’s capacity and cycle limits.
The washer is rocking or sitting unevenly
A load can be correctly arranged and still trigger repeated errors if the cabinet moves. Check that the floor is solid, the washer does not rock, and every adjustable foot contacts the floor. Soft or slippery flooring can increase vibration.

- With the tub empty, gently rock the washer from corner to corner to find any loose corner.
- Adjust the feet according to the full model manual until all feet are firmly planted.
- Retest the washer. On front-load models, Samsung’s US instructions describe loosening and retightening the feet’s locking nuts with a flat-blade screwdriver; follow your model’s procedure rather than assuming the same hardware or direction applies.
Shipping bolts or other installation hardware remain fitted
If the problem began immediately after installation, inspect the installation before suspecting a repair fault. Front-load washers are shipped with transit bolts that restrain the tub; they must be removed before operation. Samsung says to retain the bolts and spacers for a future move. Installation checks differ by design: Samsung Hong Kong’s guidance also refers to checking the shipping base on top-loaders, and that page applies specifically to Hong Kong products. Your local, model-specific instructions take precedence.
The cycle does not suit the load
Samsung says cycles are designed for particular fabric types and soil levels. Follow the load limits and cycle guidance in the model manual, especially for bulky bedding, waterproof items, and mixed loads.

Code meanings at a glance
| Displayed code | What Samsung guidance indicates | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| UE, Ub, U6 | Load detected as unbalanced during spin | Exact display and recovery behavior vary by model and market. |
| Ur | Washer is retrying balance, potentially by adding water | The retry can extend the cycle. |
| 1 Ub, 1U6 | Unbalanced-load indication in Samsung’s US code grouping | Confirm against your model manual. |
| dc | Unbalanced load on some models | On other models, dc means a door error; do not diagnose it from the code alone. |
A safe troubleshooting sequence
- Record the evidence. Note the exact code, when it appears (usually during spin), whether the cabinet rocks, and the washer’s full model number. The same code can mean different things across models and countries.
- Inspect the load. Look for one heavy item, clumped clothing, or tangled bedding. Redistribute it and restart as the manual allows.
- Check stability. Confirm the floor is stable, the machine does not rock, and all feet touch the floor. Adjust them only with the model’s specified method.
- Review installation. For a recently installed front-loader, verify that the correct shipping bolts and spacers were removed. Check the applicable installation instructions for top-load models.
- Run a controlled test. After correcting the load or leveling, run a suitable small-load cycle. Samsung’s US guidance recommends a small-load test after leveling adjustments.
- Use calibration only as directed. If your model provides calibration, follow its manual exactly and leave the drum empty. Samsung says calibration recalibrates weight detection; the drum moves back and forth for about one to three minutes. Button combinations are not universal, so do not copy a sequence from another model.
When the problem needs service
Contact Samsung or an appropriately qualified appliance technician when correct loading, stable leveling, installation checks, and model-appropriate calibration or testing do not stop the vibration or repeated codes. The general support guidance does not establish that a suspension system, bearing, sensor, or control board is defective in any particular washer. Identifying an internal failure requires inspection of the specific model and symptoms.
Have the full model number, purchase or installation date, displayed code, load type, and a description of when the vibration starts ready for support. Do not continue operating a machine that moves dangerously, strikes surrounding cabinets, leaks, or produces unusual mechanical noise.
Quick Recap
How to prevent repeat unbalanced loads
- Mix appropriately sized items instead of washing one water-heavy article by itself.
- Untangle sheets and blankets before the spin stage.
- Keep loads within the model’s stated capacity and use the cycle intended for the fabric and item type.
- Recheck the feet if the washer is moved, the floor changes, or vibration returns after an installation adjustment.
- Keep shipping hardware for future relocation, but never leave transit restraints installed during normal washing.
