IKEA announced 21 listed Matter-compatible smart-home products and product variations on November 6, 2025. The launch covers KAJPLATS bulbs, five sensor types, BILRESA physical controls and the GRILLPLATS smart plug—not 21 entirely different device families. Matter can make IKEA equipment easier to combine with other brands, but IKEA says every Matter-enabled product still needs a compatible smart-home hub.

IKEA’s announcement does not set one worldwide price or launch date. Sales timing, stock and specifications must be checked with your local IKEA market.

What IKEA actually launched

IKEA’s official list totals 21 launch entries: 11 KAJPLATS bulb variations, five sensor variations, four BILRESA remote entries (including two kits) and one GRILLPLATS smart plug. The range is intended to cover everyday lighting, household monitoring, physical controls and remote power switching.

Category Products Primary use
Lighting KAJPLATS Dimmable white-spectrum or colour lighting in common lamp formats
Sensors MYGGSPRAY, MYGGBETT, TIMMERFLOTTE, ALPSTUGA, KLIPPBOK Motion, doors and windows, climate, air quality and leaks
Controls BILRESA Button, wheel and scene control without opening a phone app
Power GRILLPLATS Remote switching and energy-use tracking for suitable loads

That count is best understood as product variations and kits. It should not be read as 21 unrelated categories or 21 unique hardware platforms.

KAJPLATS bulbs: the largest part of the range

KAJPLATS is the lighting family. IKEA lists these formats and capabilities:

  • E27/E26 standard globe, 1,055 lumens, with colour and white-spectrum, colour-changing operation.
  • E27/E26 bulbs at 470, 1,055 and 1,521 lumens with white-spectrum, dimmable operation.
  • P45 E14 bulbs at 470 and 806 lumens with white-spectrum dimming, plus an 806-lumen colour-and-white-spectrum version.
  • GU10 bulbs at 470 lumens with colour and white-spectrum colour changing, and 575 lumens with white-spectrum dimming.
  • Clear-glass decorative bulbs, including an E14 470-lumen model and E27 globe formats listed at 470 and 810 lumens.

IKEA says KAJPLATS offers more colour options and wider light-intensity ranges than its previous TRÅDFRI range; that is IKEA’s product claim, not independent testing. Check the base and voltage before buying. IKEA notes that an E14 product may be sold as E12 or E17 in markets using different local standards, while E26 and E27 are not interchangeable assumptions in every fixture.

The five sensor types

MYGGSPRAY motion sensor

MYGGSPRAY is intended for indoor or outdoor motion detection, such as switching lights or scenes when movement is detected. “Indoor/outdoor” should still be interpreted with the installation and climate limits in your local instructions.

BILRESA remotes and GRILLPLATS plug

BILRESA physical controls

The dual-button BILRESA remote handles on/off, brightness, colour and preset scenes. The scroll-wheel version adds wheel-based dimming, colour, group and scene control. IKEA also lists colourful multi-unit kits in green, red and beige, using button or scroll-wheel configurations. These controls matter when several people need simple physical operation instead of relying on a phone or voice assistant.

GRILLPLATS smart plug

GRILLPLATS can remotely switch ordinary lamps or smaller appliances, track energy consumption and pair with a remote or motion sensor. IKEA says its sales begin separately, so check local availability. The global announcement does not publish a complete electrical-load specification; verify supported loads before connecting heaters, motors, compressors or other high-demand equipment.

What Matter changes—and what it does not

Matter is an interoperability standard designed to let supported smart-home devices communicate across participating brands and ecosystems. In principle, a Matter product is less tied to one manufacturer’s app than an older proprietary device.

It is not a guarantee that every feature works everywhere. Actual behavior depends on the device type, the Matter features it exposes, your platform and hub, firmware, regional model and whether the platform supports advanced functions such as energy reports, air-quality readings, scenes or notifications.

IKEA specifically says Matter-enabled products require a compatible smart-home hub. They do not pair directly with a phone simply because the Matter logo appears on the box.

Is the DIRIGERA hub required?

DIRIGERA is one supported option, not an absolute requirement in every installation. IKEA says a compatible hub from another manufacturer may work, subject to that ecosystem’s support for the particular device.

DIRIGERA has two important roles:

  • Matter Controller: it can commission and control Matter devices, including compatible products from other brands.
  • Matter Bridge: it can expose older IKEA Zigbee products to Matter-supported ecosystems.

IKEA’s DIRIGERA Matter announcement explains the bridge relationship. A bridged older product may not expose every original feature to every Matter platform, so “works through Matter” does not mean feature parity across apps.

A practical setup path

IKEA has not published one complete, version-specific button-by-button procedure for this entire range. The following is a general Matter setup sequence; menu names vary by hub and ecosystem.

  1. Confirm the local product variant, socket, voltage and availability.
  2. Check that your intended Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa or other Matter ecosystem supports the device category and desired features.
  3. Provide a compatible Matter controller or hub.
  4. If using IKEA’s system, install and configure DIRIGERA and the IKEA Home smart system.
  5. Use the ecosystem’s Matter pairing flow and scan the QR code or enter the setup code.
  6. Assign the device to a room and test its basic function.
  7. For sensors, test notifications and automation triggers before relying on them.
  8. For GRILLPLATS, verify the appliance type and electrical load against local product documentation.

If pairing or automations fail

  • Check that the hub is powered, online and updated.
  • Confirm the device is not still paired to another Matter fabric or ecosystem.
  • Make sure the phone is on the local network required by the hub.
  • Locate the original Matter QR or setup code.
  • Recheck the regional socket or product variant, including E12, E14, E17, E26, E27 and GU10 differences.
  • Check whether the platform supports the sensor’s advanced readings, energy reporting or scene controls—not merely basic on/off operation.
  • Use DIRIGERA bridging for older IKEA products instead of attempting direct Matter pairing.

Availability, pricing and regional limits

The November 6, 2025 global release gives no universal price list and does not confirm that every item is sold in the United States or any other particular market. IKEA says sales starts and local pricing vary. Check the relevant country IKEA store for stock, voltage, socket, plug and electrical ratings rather than relying on the global announcement.

Who should consider the range?

Good fit

  • People starting an IKEA-centered smart home and wanting bulbs, sensors and remotes from one familiar range.
  • Existing DIRIGERA owners who want newer Matter products alongside older IKEA devices.
  • Matter users seeking additional lighting, leak detection, climate monitoring or physical controls.
  • Households that prefer buttons or a wheel for daily lighting control.

Reasons to hesitate

  • You do not already have a compatible hub and do not want the extra hardware or setup cost.
  • Your platform requires a feature—such as detailed energy data or a particular notification workflow—that has not been verified for this device.
  • You need certified security, professional water shutoff, medical-grade environmental measurement or a universal entertainment remote.
  • You need a high-load plug and cannot confirm GRILLPLATS’s local electrical limits.

Buying checklist

  • Match the bulb base, voltage and fixture clearance.
  • Budget for a controller or hub as well as the device where required.
  • Verify support in the exact ecosystem and region you use.
  • Decide whether you need colour, white-spectrum dimming, scenes or only on/off control.
  • Check indoor/outdoor placement guidance for MYGGSPRAY.
  • For KLIPPBOK, remember that detection is not automatic water shutoff.
  • For GRILLPLATS, confirm appliance type and load before purchase.
  • Check local stock, returns and the market-specific product page.

Verdict

IKEA’s 21-entry Matter launch makes its smart-home range more open and potentially easier to expand across ecosystems. Its practical strengths are broad starter categories, physical controls and DIRIGERA’s ability to combine new Matter products with older IKEA equipment. The trade-off is that Matter does not remove the need to check hubs, regional variants, platform feature support and electrical safety. Treat the announcement as a promising ecosystem expansion—not proof that every product, feature or market is universally compatible.
