The best light gray depends on your room’s light, finishes, and tolerance for warm or cool undertones. Benjamin Moore’s light-gray collection offers 12 useful starting points, including shades that can read blue in some conditions and others whose apparent temperature changes beside wood, cream, white, or blue furnishings. Compare the exact color code in your room, then approve a large sample before buying paint.
The 12 light gray colors to compare
Use the manufacturer code whenever you order a color card or sample. The names alone are not sufficient for reliable matching.

This is a shortlist, not a ranking. “Light gray” describes a family rather than one universal neutral, and the same swatch can appear different as the room and daylight change.
How to choose a gray that stays neutral in your room
Start with undertone, not the name
Benjamin Moore defines an undertone as a subtle underlying color. Light, surrounding colors, and furnishings can amplify or subdue it. In the manufacturer’s example, Stonington Gray HC-170 and Wickham Gray HC-171 may reveal cool blue undertones. If you want to avoid a gray that looks blue, test those two especially carefully rather than assuming their names indicate a warm neutral.

Use LRV to estimate brightness
Sherwin-Williams defines Light Reflective Value (LRV) as how much light a paint reflects and gives a typical neutral guidance range of 50–60 for a bright, airy feel. Treat that range as guidance, not a rule: individual colors in this 12-color list do not have LRV figures established here, and perceived brightness also depends on the room.
Account for the room’s orientation
- North-facing rooms: Cooler, less direct daylight can make a gray feel cooler. Check whether a blue cast appears before committing.
- South-facing rooms: Stronger, warmer daylight can shift the same gray toward a softer or warmer appearance.
- East-facing rooms: Morning light may look warmer and the afternoon more subdued, so view samples at both times.
- West-facing rooms: Afternoon and evening light can be warmer and more intense than the morning view.
These are lighting tendencies, not guarantees. Weather, windows, artificial lamps, and neighboring surfaces can change the result.

- COLORS CRAFTED BY ANNIE SLOAN: Paris Grey is a traditional and timeless grey, made from a mix of orange and blue. It provides a soft, gentle, and elegant backdrop for furniture and soft furnishings, and looks particularly great with colors with orange or blue undertones.
- COVERAGE: One-step high performance Annie Sloan Wall Paint provides great coverage. Each gallon covers up to 387 sq. ft. Coverage will vary depending on surface and application.
- HOW TO USE: Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Stir paint well before use. Apply by brush or roller. Ready for a second coat 1.5 hours after application, depending on conditions. Recommended application of two coats for best finish.
- AFTERCARE: Thoroughly wash brushes or rollers in warm soapy water.
- WASHABLE FINISH: Each deeply nuanced shade offers durable and wipeable coverage. It is easy to clean walls without damaging the paint surface.
Compare against permanent finishes
Hold the swatch beside flooring, trim, counters, tile, cabinetry, and upholstery. A gray that looks balanced next to bright white may appear warmer beside blue-gray furnishings or cooler beside warm wood and cream. This pairing advice is a practical application of the manufacturer’s undertone guidance, not a promise that any shade will look identical in every home.
Why sampling is essential
Benjamin Moore warns that colors shown on screens and printed cards may differ from the actual paint. A digital favorite can therefore disappoint when it covers a wall. Use a large sample or sample pot of the exact color and code, and evaluate it in the room where it will be used.

A reliable sampling procedure
- Obtain a sample labeled with the full name and code, such as Classic Gray OC-23.
- Apply it to a large test area or a movable sample board. A small chip makes undertones and contrast harder to judge.
- Place the sample near, but not directly over, trim, flooring, counters, and major furnishings so those surroundings remain visible.
- Observe it in morning, afternoon, and evening light, with the room’s normal lamps switched on as well as off.
- Move the board to each wall if the room receives noticeably different light around its perimeter.
- Only after the color remains acceptable through those changes should you calculate gallons and begin the full project.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing from a screen: Online and printed representations are not guaranteed to match paint.
- Assuming “gray” means undertone-free: Every gray can be influenced by underlying color and its surroundings.
- Ignoring fixed finishes: Existing wood, stone, tile, and fabrics can shift the apparent temperature.
- Looking at one time of day: A shade that works in morning light may read differently after sunset.
- Ordering by name alone: Include the Benjamin Moore code to reduce sample and matching errors.
- Painting the whole room first: A test area costs far less than correcting an unsuitable full-room color.
A practical way to narrow the shortlist
- Remove colors that conflict with the room’s fixed finishes. Compare all 12 beside the floor, trim, counters, and upholstery.
- Separate warm-looking and cool-looking finalists. Pay particular attention to possible blue in Stonington Gray HC-170 and Wickham Gray HC-171.
- Check brightness in context. Use LRV as a brightness clue, while remembering that the manufacturer’s 50–60 neutral range is not a universal requirement.
- Test the final two or three. View large samples through the day and under the room’s actual lighting.
- Record the winner by name and code. Keep the label for future touch-ups and matching.
Recommended starting point for sampling
Classic Gray OC-23 is a useful first sample because it is one of the named light-gray options in Benjamin Moore’s collection. It is not guaranteed to be the best choice for every room; compare it directly with the other finalists under your actual lighting before purchasing gallons.
