13 DIY outdoor Christmas decorations
1. Ribbon-candy decorations from flashing
Form oversized candy-cane or ribbon loops from aluminum flashing, threaded rods and painted wooden beads. Pre-drill the flashing, secure each loop before hanging, and use a firm attachment point. Aluminum tolerates outdoor weather better than ordinary paper or fabric, making these suitable for fences, porches and roofline displays.
2. Ice-mushroom lights
Freeze water in bowls and cups to create cap-and-stem shapes. Release the ice, bore a center hole while wearing gloves, and place an LED tea light inside. Stabilize the ice before drilling and set the finished lights where melting water will not create a slip hazard. They are a short-lived option for a freezing-weather event.

4. Ombré bells swag
Invert a tree-base clipping, wire clusters of jingle bells along the branches and finish with a broad satin bow. Choose greenery that fits your local cold and moisture conditions. Add a protective pad or non-scratch hanger so wire and branches do not mark the door.
5. Evergreen star frames
Build an eight-point star from wood strips and cover it with cedar, juniper, boxwood, spruce or another suitable cutting. Cedar is described as able to withstand wintry weather; some herbs perform better indoors in cold conditions. Tie the cuttings securely with floral wire and hang the frame from a load-rated hook.

10. Frosty banner
Cut paper snowflakes and string them between monofilament lines. Hang the banner under an overhang or in another sheltered location; wind and precipitation can quickly destroy paper. Use removable hooks or clips if you are avoiding drilled holes.
11. Paper-bag luminarias
Punch star patterns in paper bags and place LED candles inside, spacing the bags along a path on stable, noncombustible ground. Keep every luminaria away from open flames and accumulated leaves or other combustible debris. Weight or shield the bags where wind is likely.
12. Shooting-star outdoor lighting
Wrap outdoor-rated Christmas lights around a metal star and hang additional strands below it to create a falling-star effect. Fasten the star and light strands to a firm support so wind cannot swing or tear them loose. Keep connectors elevated and protected from standing water.

13. Adapt the ideas into wreaths, garlands and light scenes
Use the same construction methods for wreaths, garlands, tree and shrub wraps, roofline icicle lights, pathway lighting or light-up figures. Combine a durable focal piece, such as a flashing bow or star, with greenery and a controlled lighting zone rather than covering every surface. For an outdoor wreath, use lights designed for outdoor use, and secure the wreath to a load-rated hook or clip.

Inspect every light strand
The National Park Service advises: “Inspect your holiday lights before use and discard light strands with cracked lights, excessive kinking, frayed cords, or loose sockets.” Do this before hanging anything, and replace damaged strands rather than taping over a failed socket or cord.

Use outdoor-rated equipment
Choose lights, extension cords, connectors and clips marked for outdoor conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s limits for how many strands may be connected; the U.S. Fire Administration reports that almost one-third of home Christmas-tree fires are caused by electrical problems and recommends those limits.

Secure against wind and protect surfaces
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends fastening outdoor lights securely to trees, houses, walls or another firm support. Keep wires away from sharp flashing edges, moving gates and standing water. For renters, clean the surface, install removable outdoor hooks or light clips exactly as directed, respect the stated load rating and remove them slowly after the season.
Control flame and combustible material
LED candles are the safer choice inside paper bags, ice forms and decorative lamps. If you use a real flame, maintain at least 12 inches of clearance from burnable materials and never leave it unattended. Clear dry leaves, packaging and excess greenery from every lighted area.
Quick Recap
A practical installation sequence
- Map the display: Decide which pieces face the street, which stay under cover and where power outlets are located.
- Check the substrate: Confirm that doors, siding, masonry, trees and frozen soil can accept the chosen hook, clip, screw or rod without damage.
- Build and test on the ground: Assemble bows, stars, wreaths and light runs before lifting them into place.
- Install the heaviest anchors first: Attach load-rated hooks, screws or ground rods, then add the decoration and check for movement.
- Route power safely: Keep connections off the ground where possible, avoid pinch points and use only outdoor-rated components.
- Recheck after weather: Look for loosened fasteners, water intrusion, torn paper, brittle greenery or exposed wiring after wind, rain or snow.
Storage that makes next year easier
- Label light strands by location and coil them loosely to prevent kinks.
- Store flashing bows, stars and metal figures with cardboard between painted faces.
- Keep vinyl clings flat between clean sheets of paper.
- Remove soil and moisture from hooks, clips, rods and wooden parts before boxing them.
- Compost spent greenery and paper rather than storing materials that will not survive another season.
