Work through the checks below in order before replacing equipment.
Five-minute fix
- Unmute the projector, source device, application, soundbar and receiver, then raise volume on each relevant device.
- Confirm the projector is showing the HDMI input connected to your source.
- Select the projector or HDMI connection as the source device’s audio output.
- Change HDMI audio to PCM, LPCM or stereo/2-channel PCM instead of Dolby, DTS, Bitstream or pass-through.
- Power off the projector and every HDMI device, unplug them for about 60 seconds, then reconnect the simplest direct HDMI path.
- Try another HDMI cable, projector input and source device.
- Check that the projector actually has an internal speaker or a usable audio output.
Epson’s troubleshooting guidance likewise starts with volume, mute, connections, source selection, PCM output and the projector’s speaker/output setting (Epson support).
First decide where the sound should come from
Some projectors have built-in speakers; others only display video. A model without a speaker may still provide Bluetooth, optical, 3.5-mm or HDMI ARC/eARC output—or no audio path at all. Check the exact manual and specifications.
- Projector speaker: choose Speaker or Internal Speaker as the output.
- Soundbar or receiver: use ARC/eARC, optical, an analog output or an HDMI audio extractor as supported by the model.
- Bluetooth speaker: pair it and explicitly select it as the audio destination.
- Source device speaker: keep audio on the laptop, tablet or console while sending only video to the projector.
An ordinary HDMI port is normally an input. It does not automatically send projector audio to a soundbar.

- USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
- In-line volume control for easy access
- Blue LED lights; metal finish and scratch-free padded base

No sound from the projector’s own speaker
Clear every mute state
Press the projector remote’s mute control. Also cancel temporary image or A/V mute (Epson calls this A/V Mute or Image Mute), unmute the source and application, and check any connected Bluetooth speaker or receiver.
Select the internal speaker
Projector menus may offer Speaker, Bluetooth, Optical, ARC/eARC or Headphone. Select Speaker. Epson notes that audio can otherwise be diverted to a Bluetooth device (Epson model guidance).
Use a compatible format
Set the source to PCM or stereo for diagnosis. Older projectors often accept video while lacking support for newer compressed audio formats. Menu names differ by model.

Check model-specific controls
On applicable BenQ models, check Sound > Mute > Disabled, Sound > S/PDIF > Disabled when using the internal speaker, and Sound > Volume (BenQ support).
No sound from a Windows 11 laptop
- Select the taskbar speaker icon and choose the HDMI/projector device.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the projector, HDMI display, soundbar or receiver and confirm volume is not muted.
- Temporarily disable Bluetooth so Windows cannot continue sending audio to headphones or another speaker.
- If system sounds work but one browser or application does not, inspect its volume mixer, browser-tab mute and in-app volume; restart that application after changing output.
- If the device is missing, leave HDMI connected, restart the projector and computer, then check the list again. Use Microsoft’s Get Help audio troubleshooter before updating or reinstalling graphics/audio drivers.
Microsoft documents these output controls at its Windows audio guide. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so paths and support advice here target current Windows 11 installations.
No sound from a Mac
- Open System Settings > Sound.
- Under Output, choose the HDMI-connected projector, display, soundbar or receiver.
- Raise output volume and make sure mute is off.
- If the device is absent, reconnect HDMI, wake or power-cycle the projector, and reopen Sound settings.
Some Mac ports or adapters carry video without audio. Epson advises using a separate audio connection when the Mac HDMI path does not support sound (Epson guidance).

Streaming sticks, consoles and Blu-ray players
Open the device’s audio settings and choose PCM, Linear PCM or stereo rather than Auto, Dolby, DTS, Bitstream or pass-through. Test a system menu sound, another application and locally stored content. If only one app is silent, inspect its volume or browser-tab mute.
Disconnect receivers, splitters, docks and adapters. Connect the source directly to the projector, test another HDMI input and then test the source on a television known to produce sound. A console or player that works elsewhere but not through the projector is often using an unsupported format or encountering an HDMI handshake problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHDMI cable, adapter and handshake isolation
- Remove USB-C docks, splitters, receivers and adapters.
- Connect one source directly to the projector with a known-good HDMI cable.
- Try a second projector input.
- Test the source on another display and test the projector with another source.
- For a handshake reset, turn off all devices, unplug them for approximately 60 seconds, connect the direct path, turn on the projector first, select its input, then power on the audio system and source.
- Reconnect additional components one at a time.
If every source is silent, suspect projector settings, compatibility or hardware. If one source fails, suspect its output setting, format, adapter or cable. A new cable can reveal a defect, but premium cable branding is not a substitute for output and format checks.

Soundbar or receiver is silent
Understand the signal direction
HDMI ARC/eARC is an audio-return feature, not a feature of every HDMI socket. Both projector and soundbar/receiver need matching ARC/eARC ports; HDMI-CEC or HDMI Link may need to be enabled; the correct audio output must be selected; and a compliant cable is required. Epson’s applicable instructions include using the ARC-labeled port, enabling CEC and ARC, and selecting external audio output (Epson support).
Connecting a soundbar to an ordinary projector HDMI input usually sends nothing from the projector to the bar.
Choose a wiring method
| Arrangement | When it works |
|---|---|
| Source → soundbar/receiver → projector | The audio system supports HDMI video pass-through. |
| Source → projector → soundbar | The projector has the required ARC/eARC, optical or analog output. |
| Source → HDMI audio extractor → projector and soundbar | The projector lacks a suitable audio output; extractor formats and HDCP must match the setup. |
| Source or projector → Bluetooth speaker | Both devices support the required Bluetooth audio function; expect possible latency. |
For optical or ARC systems, PCM is a useful first test. Some non-ARC arrangements behave better with HDMI-CEC disabled; Epson specifically documents that possibility for certain models.

Bluetooth connected but silent
Projector to Bluetooth speaker
Pair the speaker in the projector’s Bluetooth-audio menu, select it as output, disconnect competing headphones or speakers, and power-cycle both devices before pairing again. Some projectors have a special Bluetooth-speaker mode that changes normal operation.
Laptop video to projector, audio to Bluetooth
Leave HDMI selected for the display, then separately select the Bluetooth speaker under Windows or macOS Sound output. On Windows, verify the intended device is selected and supports an appropriate audio profile; Microsoft identifies A2DP for higher-quality Bluetooth streaming (Microsoft support). Bluetooth is convenient but can add noticeable lip-sync delay, especially in games or dialogue-heavy viewing.
Delayed, distorted or intermittent sound
- Delay: Bluetooth processing is a common cause; use wired, optical or HDMI audio.
- Distortion or silence: force PCM/stereo and remove surround processing.
- Cutouts after adding equipment: simplify the HDMI chain; a splitter, receiver, dock or CEC interaction may be at fault.
- Only streaming content fails: compare a system sound and local file, then change one format setting at a time.
When the projector may be defective
Seek qualified service when no source produces sound after direct-cable and PCM tests; the internal speaker is selected with volume high and mute off; audio settings disappear; known-good sources crackle or cut out; or the projector has liquid, impact, overheating or power damage. A loose headphone or audio-out jack is also a service issue. Do not open the projector: internal power circuits can be hazardous.
