How to Change the Battery in a Philips Hue Dimmer Switch

The older Hue Dimmer Switch uses CR2450; the current model uses CR2032. Identify the button layout, replace the cell without resetting the switch, and troubleshoot problems safely.

The correct battery depends on your switch’s button layout: the older Philips Hue Dimmer Switch with separate On and Off buttons uses a CR2450; the current model with a combined On/Off button and a Hue button uses a CR2032. Replacing the cell normally does not erase settings, require rewiring, or require pairing the switch again.

Button layout Model Battery
Separate On and Off buttons Older/original model CR2450
Combined On/Off button plus Hue button Current/latest model CR2032

Philips shows these generation differences on its Hue Dimmer Switch product page. Do not substitute one size for the other: both are 3-volt coin cells, but their thicknesses and holders differ.

Identify your Hue Dimmer Switch first

Older switch: CR2450

Look for a separate On button at the top and a separate Off button at the bottom. Philips specifies one CR2450 battery and lists a minimum battery lifetime of three years for this model: older-model specifications.

Current switch: CR2032

The latest design has a combined On/Off button at the top and a Hue button at the bottom. Philips lists one CR2032 battery and a minimum battery lifetime of two years: current-model product page. These are minimum or expected specifications, not guaranteed replacement intervals; use, signal conditions, firmware and button activity affect actual life.

What you need

  • One fresh CR2450 (older model) or CR2032 (current model).
  • A clean, dry work surface.
  • A small coin for the older model’s rotating cover.
  • Optional: a fingernail or plastic spudger for a tight cover.

Use a reputable manufacturer and check the package date. Do not use a swollen, leaking or corroded cell, and do not use a rechargeable coin cell unless Philips specifically lists it as compatible. Avoid knives and metal screwdrivers around the contacts.

Remove the switch from its wall plate

  1. Pull the removable control unit away from its wall plate or magnetic mount.
  2. Work on the handheld module, not while it is attached to the wall.
  3. No mains circuit needs to be switched off; the Dimmer Switch is wireless and battery-powered.

Philips describes the control unit as removable from its base plate: product information sheet.

Replace the older model’s CR2450

  1. Turn the switch over and find the round battery-cover area on the rear.
  2. Put a coin in the cover slot and rotate it in the direction shown by the molded arrow or lock/unlock marking.
  3. Lift off the cover and remove the old CR2450. Note its orientation before removing it.
  4. Insert the new CR2450 so its positive and negative sides match the markings inside the holder. In many holders the + side faces outward, but confirm yours rather than assuming.
  5. Refit the cover and rotate it back until it locks.
  6. Press a button to test the switch.

Philips confirms the CR2450 specification but does not publish a detailed replacement sequence on the older product-information sheet. A visual reference showing both generations is available at this demonstration.

Replace the current model’s CR2032

  1. Turn the switch over and locate the rear battery compartment and its seam or release feature.
  2. Open it according to the molded markings for your hardware revision. Do not pry against the front button panel or push a tool deeply into the housing.
  3. Remove the old CR2032 and note which face was upward.
  4. Install the replacement with the polarity shown inside the compartment, normally matching the removed cell.
  5. Close the cover fully and press a button to test the lights.

The current Philips page confirms the CR2032 specification but does not provide one illustrated opening sequence for every revision. See this additional visual reference; do not assume every production revision opens identically.

Test the switch after changing the cell

  1. Press the On/Off button, or the On and Off buttons on the older model.
  2. Try both dimming buttons.
  3. Test close to the Hue lights or Bridge.
  4. Confirm that the battery number and polarity are correct.
  5. If necessary, remove and reseat the cell so it sits fully under the retaining clip.
  6. Inspect contacts for dirt, oxidation, bending or damage.

A battery change alone should not erase button assignments or require a factory reset. If the Hue app still shows low battery, close and reopen it or allow its device status to refresh.

If the switch still does not work

No response at all

  • Recheck CR2450 versus CR2032 and install another fresh cell if needed.
  • Verify the + and − orientation and that the cover is locked or fully closed.
  • Clean visible contacts with a dry cloth and test near the Bridge or lights.
  • Look for leakage or corrosion that may have damaged the contacts.

Intermittent operation

  • The cell may be weak even if it shows some voltage.
  • The retaining contact may not hold it firmly, or the cover may be slightly unseated.
  • A bent contact can cause unreliable operation. Avoid forcing it; breaking it can make the switch irreparable.

Button assignments changed

Battery replacement is not the likely cause. Open Hue app → Settings → Devices and check the switch configuration. Philips’ device instructions also use this path and the plus button when adding a switch: Hue device guidance.

Reset only as a last resort

Resetting can remove custom assignments. Philips’ procedure is:

  1. Open the device’s edit screen in the Hue app and tap Reset.
  2. If the problem remains, delete the switch from the Hue app.
  3. Press the physical setup button or pinhole for more than 10 seconds.
  4. Add the switch again through the app.

Follow Philips’ reset guidance at this support page only after battery, polarity, contacts and range have been checked.

Battery safety and disposal

  • Coin cells are dangerous if swallowed; keep new and used batteries away from children and pets.
  • Never short-circuit, crush, puncture, heat or recharge a disposable lithium coin cell.
  • Keep a leaking or damaged battery away from skin and electronics.
  • Recycle or dispose of the used cell according to local battery rules rather than ordinary household waste. Philips gives disposal guidance on its current product page.

Repair or replace the whole switch?

A new battery is the sensible repair when the buttons and housing are intact and there is no corrosion or liquid damage. Consider replacing the switch if the compartment is broken, the cover will not close, contacts are corroded, or failures continue with a confirmed-good battery.

Philips’ U.S. page listed the latest Hue Dimmer Switch at $30.99 on August 18, 2026; price, stock and regional availability can change: official listing. A Smart Button, Tap Dial, Tap Switch Mini or wired Hue control is a different product with different battery or installation requirements, not a substitute for these battery instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing the battery erase my Hue Dimmer Switch settings?

Normally no. Replace the cell and test the switch before considering a reset; resetting can remove custom assignments.

Can I use a CR2032 instead of a CR2450?

No. Use CR2450 for the older switch with separate On and Off buttons, and CR2032 for the current switch with a combined On/Off and Hue button.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Do I need a Hue Bridge to replace the battery?

No. Battery replacement is a physical repair. A Bridge may be needed for some app-based configuration, but not for opening the switch or installing the cell.

What if the battery cover will not open?

Check the molded lock/unlock markings, remove the module from its mount, and use a coin or plastic tool gently. Do not force the front panel or pry against contacts.

Can I use a rechargeable coin cell?

Not unless Philips specifically lists that chemistry as compatible. Use the specified disposable battery type.

When should I replace the switch instead of the battery?

Replace it when the housing or compartment is damaged, contacts are corroded, the cover will not close, or a confirmed-good battery does not restore reliable operation.
