The most reliable way to remove skunk odor is fresh 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with baking soda and a small amount of dish soap. The peroxide oxidizes the sulfur compounds that smell skunky, while the soap lifts the oily musk so it can be rinsed away. Use the mixture immediately, never store it, and choose a different method for clothing, porous building materials, or HVAC systems.
Why skunk smell is so persistent
Skunk spray is an oily mixture containing sulfur-based thiols and thioacetates. Thiols produce the characteristic odor. Cornell explains that thioacetates can convert back into thiols when they meet water, which is why a dog may smell skunky again when it gets wet months after an incomplete treatment.
The household formula works by changing thiols into water-soluble, much less odorous compounds. The peroxide and baking soda create an alkaline peroxide solution that oxidizes thiols into sulfonates or odorless acids; dish soap breaks up the oily coating. Chemist Paul Krebaum’s formulation is described by University of Nebraska Extension as one that “changes the odorous thiols into odorless acids.”
The fresh peroxide formula

Use a large, open container. Mix only what you need, because the ingredients begin generating oxygen and the solution loses effectiveness as it sits. Never put the mixture in a bottle, jar, bucket with a lid, or other closed container: pressure can build until it bursts. Discard leftovers after use.

How to treat a sprayed dog
- Keep the dog outdoors while you prepare and apply the treatment. This prevents oily spray from transferring to carpets, upholstery, and clothing.
- Put on gloves and old clothing. Protect your eyes and avoid the dog’s eyes, mouth, nose, and open wounds.
- Combine 1 quart of fresh 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1–2 teaspoons liquid dish soap in an open container.
- Apply the bubbling mixture to the sprayed fur. Work it through the coat, keeping it away from the face.
- Leave it on for about five minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Repeat once if odor remains, using a newly mixed batch rather than stored solution.
Peroxide can turn black fur bronze and may irritate skin. If the dog’s eyes or mouth were directly sprayed, contact a veterinarian immediately rather than attempting to treat those areas with the formula. After heavy or repeated exposure, watch for lethargy, weakness, poor appetite, dark or chocolate-colored gums, or other signs of anemia and seek veterinary care if they occur.
People exposed to skunk spray
Move into fresh air, remove contaminated clothing, and shower promptly. If spray gets in the eyes, flush continuously with cool water and obtain medical advice. Cornell warns that the peroxide formula itself can irritate eyes severely, including causing corneal ulcers, so keep it out of the eyes and do not use it as an eyewash. Wear gloves, avoid smoking while applying it, and wash exposed skin after treatment.

Clothes, shoes, and washable fabrics
Washable clothing
Wash contaminated clothing with laundry detergent. A second wash may be needed. Hang items outdoors between washes and do not put them in a dryer while odor remains; heat can drive the smell deeper into fibers and spread it through the dryer.
Shoes and non-washable items
Suspend shoes and other non-washable items outdoors where moving air can carry away volatile thiols. Test any cleaner on an inconspicuous area first. Do not apply the undiluted peroxide formula directly to garments, upholstery, or other fabrics because it can discolor them.

Removing odor from a house, furniture, and HVAC system
Start with ventilation and the source
Open windows and use fans to move indoor air outside. Locate and clean the sprayed source—such as an entryway, porch, pet bedding, or a wall—and keep contaminated animals and fabrics out of the building during cleanup.
Porous construction materials
Wallboard, concrete, unpainted wood, and other porous materials can absorb musk. They may require repeated deodorizing, sealing, or removal and replacement when odor persists. Humidity can make residual odor seem to return because moisture helps trapped compounds become airborne again.

Furnaces and air conditioners
Replace a furnace or air-conditioner filter if it absorbed odor. Run ventilation only after the contaminated source has been addressed; otherwise the system can distribute the smell through the building.
Products for inanimate surfaces
Extension guidance discusses products such as Freshwave/Ecosorb, Epoleon, and Neutroleum Alpha for buildings and furnishings. Use them only as their labels direct, test surfaces first, and ventilate the area. UC IPM specifically notes that Neutroleum Alpha may be useful on furniture or buildings but is not for use on pets or people.

Why tomato juice is not a real neutralizer
Tomato juice does not chemically break down skunk thiols. Arkansas Extension says its apparent benefit mainly comes from “olfactory fatigue”: after prolonged exposure to the strong tomato odor, the nose temporarily notices the skunk smell less. Once the effect fades, the musk remains. Use an oxidation-and-degreasing treatment instead.
