Breadboard Ends: How to Build One That Allows for Wood Movement

Breadboard ends cover a panel’s end grain and can help resist cupping. Their center can be secured while outer mortises or peg holes allow seasonal wood movement.

A breadboard end is a rail fitted across the end of a solid-wood panel, usually with tenons on the panel engaging mortises in the rail. It can help resist cupping and cover the panel’s end grain, but it must not lock the tabletop across its width: the joint needs to let the panel expand and contract across the grain as humidity changes.

What a breadboard end does

The panel’s end grain fits into a grooved rail through a series of tenons and mortises. Haunches between tenons may also be part of the layout. Properly fitted, the rail helps keep the panel end aligned and can reduce cupping. It is not a way to stop seasonal movement: solid wood still changes width as its moisture content changes.

Because the rail runs across the panel’s grain, fastening the full joint rigidly would restrain that change. The resulting stress can split the panel or loosen the joint. The design therefore combines a secure center connection with clearance toward the outer edges.

Choose a movement-friendly joint layout

There is no single mandatory pinning detail. The common principle in the described methods is to glue the center portion and provide extra room in the outer mortises or peg holes so the outer tenons or pins can shift as the panel changes width.

Approach How it accommodates movement Glue placement Pin appearance and tooling
Multiple tenons with elongated outer mortises Clearance at the outer tenons lets them move across the grain. One Woodcraft method gives about a 1/8-inch gap at each edge of the outer tenons as an example, not a universal dimension. Woodcraft Glue the center tenon or central section; do not glue the full cross-grain width. Woodcraft Tenon and pin details depend on the layout; the cited guide describes mortising and fitting work.
Tenons secured with dowels through elongated outer holes Outer peg holes are elongated across the direction of panel-width movement, so dowels retain the joint without immobilizing the panel. Woodcraft Glue the center portion, leaving the outer sections free to move. Woodcraft Dowels may be visible; the cited method describes routing or otherwise elongating holes and using dowels.
Center-glued tenon with elongated outer peg holes The outer pegs can move within their elongated holes as the top expands or contracts. Complete Illustrated Guide to Woodworking Glue only the center tenon; avoid gluing across the full top. Complete Illustrated Guide to Woodworking Pin layout and visibility depend on the chosen execution.

These are construction approaches, not interchangeable dimension plans. Choose one clear method, then size the clearances and parts for your panel and conditions rather than treating an example dimension as a rule for every species or tabletop.

Build and fit the joint

  1. Mill the rail and panel to matching thickness. Lay out the panel-end tenons and corresponding rail mortises, including any haunches in your design. The exact count and dimensions depend on the project.
  2. Cut the mortises and tenons. A hollow-chisel mortiser, dado setup, bandsaw, or router may be used depending on the layout and equipment available. Follow the chosen method’s layout so the joint has the intended movement clearance.
  3. Fit the tenons gradually. Aim for a snug sliding fit, not one that requires force. Refine the tenon cheeks with a shoulder plane or rabbet block plane if needed. Woodcraft
  4. Make the outer movement allowance. Keep the outer mortises or peg holes elongated in the direction the panel must move across its width. A cited Woodcraft example leaves about 1/8 inch at each edge of outer tenons; that is specific to that construction method, not a universal specification. Woodcraft
  5. Dry-assemble and check travel. Confirm that the rail seats properly while the outer tenons or pins retain room to shift. Do not force a fit that closes the movement clearance.
  6. Glue the center only. Apply glue to the central tenon or section specified by the selected approach. Leave the outer connection unglued where it needs to slide. Do not glue the end rail across the entire tabletop.
  7. Install the pins or dowels for retention. In a doweled method, ensure outer holes are elongated across the movement direction before inserting dowels. The pins should retain the assembly without clamping the panel against cross-grain movement.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Gluing the full width: this restrains the panel’s cross-grain movement and can lead to splitting.
  • Using tight outer pin holes: a round, close-fitting outer hole can prevent the pin from shifting with the panel.
  • Forcing the tenons into the mortises: excessive interference defeats the intended fit and may damage the joint.
  • Treating one example clearance as universal: the cited 1/8-inch-per-edge example belongs to one method; the right allowance depends on the design and project.
  • Assuming the rail eliminates movement or cupping: the panel still responds to humidity, and the breadboard end is not a substitute for a movement-aware joint.

Tools depend on the method

A shoulder plane or rabbet block plane is a useful option for trimming tenon cheeks to fit; neither is required if another suitable approach achieves the intended snug sliding fit. Mortising and elongated-hole work can be done with different shop setups, including routing or mortising equipment, so select tools around the chosen joint and the accuracy you can achieve.
